Need is a relative term. Who are you letting to in order to make this happen? And let's not start with trading Girardi or Staal for draft picks.

The only way we protect Lindberg is if we trade a forward for either picks or exempt players. I don't see that happening, especially with every other team knowing the value of exempt players. The expansion draft has killed the market

I agree. I could see a case for Nash, but again, Gorton was not interested in a pennies on the dollar return.

if Nash is with this team at the deadline, may as well self rent him by that point.

the time to deal him is at the draft imho. take back salary, or retain on his deal, and get a draft pick.

This.

Plus he is healthy right now so we can get full value, come the deadline he might have only played 20 games and is sidelined with something.

Problem is that full value may not be that much. Not unless a player with salary is coming back.

I would definitely take a flyer on Nuke in Dallas.

-Hitch and Nash love each other.
-Nuke is a wasted asset in Russia.
-Maybe the thought of playing with Buch as a LW/RW combo gets him to come back state side.
-Sheds some salary for us, if not all, maybe a buriable player comes back.

If a better offer doesn't come along, why not? I don't think Nash is hear after next July anyway and Nuke is done in Dallas.

Don't let Hitch's so called love affair with Nash fool you.

Moving Nash should be about creating cap space, bringing back the best possible asset and possibly freeing up room so that a Lindberg or Fast can be protected.

On the plus side, Stars have 2 protection slots available. They'd make a good trading partner

Outside of a protection slot, because I dont know how Nukes status affects that. He's not a great asset to bring back in a Nash trade? He is a RFA coming off a $925k cap hit. And basically is the equivalent of Kreider with a touch more dangle.

I'd be thrilled if we got him for Nash. Especially considering the "pennies on the dollar" rumors Gorton got last summer.

-Way less cap (controllable as well)
-Speed game, PF, with hands. (gives us options with Kreider in the future as well as a nasty 1/2 combo in the present)
-Nuke & Buch playing with an intelligent pass first Zibby is a intereguing line combo.

I know nuke has been beaten to death the past year but this make too much sense to me.

i don't know the answer to this question but: Is he definitely returning to the NHL?

Players are never worth more at the trading deadline than with a full year left on their contract.

That's not true at all. There is a long list of very mediocre players being dealt at the deadline for way more than they'd have gotten in the offseason. Defensemen especially carry a premium, and Paul Gaustadt for some reason.

I don't think that's really true. Look at Yandle and MSL. We only paid so much for them because there was a year left on the deal.

Yes, I think we need to be better prepared of that news this summer - we will lose either Fast or Lindberg to Vegas. And those who are already protected will probably return a 1st round pick. :)

I hope they buy out M. Staal - it`s a NMC for a reason and it`s probably not that easy to remove part of their contracts to honor it.

I thought the reason they gave paid so much for Yandle was AZ was retaining some salary. And it's hard for me to address the reason they paid so much for MSL because I feel like they vastly overpaid for him—especially given St. Louis handpicked his landing spot.

Arizona retaining half his salary for another full season brought a lot of value to the trade, yes.
