Because A, Jeff Carter has been a fantastic add, and more importantly B, his production, size, style of play, flexibility, etc, etc = this kind of money, even for a guy in his late 30's.

They guy has produced 37 points in 50 games for us, is a right handed shot, physical, dominates in the circle and like Matt Cullen, can still skate. And he's at least a full tier above Cullen as an offensive contributor. He's proven in the postseason and was our best F in the 1st round exit IMO last year. Gotta think he's a plus in the locker room.

I know it's broken record status at this point but don't forget that JJ's dead cap penalty increased to nearly 2M next season, too.

Carter's raised to less than .500.

Rust is still up in the air. I'll bet Kapanen won't be around being a RFA plus will have a good return probably at the draft.

Other guys out: ZAR, Boyle, Simon, Ruh, Riikola?

You have a lot of RFA's needing contracts in Kappy, Heinen, Friedman, POJ, O'Connor, Nylander <---good bottom six replacement and all the rest of the RFA prospects.

I'm not sure Kappy is worth throwing top coin/term to. But he's earned a decent raise, and I'm not sure what his qualifying offer is?

Again, Carter being re-signed means that they won't re-sign Rodrigues unless Rust leaves. That's literally it. They were going to pay their 3C about $3 million either way, and their 3C spot was going to be between ERod, Carter or another guy. They picked Carter.

Or they could resign Rodrigues to be a winger and C when Malkin goes down which he does every single year for weeks on end. You’re reading too much into it because nobody knows what Erod will be worth by seasons end.

Man, I like Carter, but NMCs on 35+s are dumb unless they're like 1st ballot HHOFers with Conn Smythes.

Also, which is a dumber meme? Facebook Fleury or Jesus Carter?

The only way he stays is if the Penguins can't retain Rust and decide to keep Rodrigues as a Rust replacement. They don't have the money to keep him otherwise.

I guess to me the timing is just weird. I don't see what the huge rush is. This team actually has a lot of really interesting options right now and I don't see the harm in waiting until you are sitting down at the end of the year with a full data set.

I think it's fine. I like Carter. And maybe I'm just overthinking. Just seems a little odd is all.

Carter is the perfect 3C for the team. He's solid defensively, pks, right shot for face offs, fits in on PP2, and capable of top 6 fill in time when Sid and Geno miss their usual 15 games each.

If Carter weren't old and on the brink of the physical cliff then he'd be earning a lot more than 3.125MM per year based on his production.

I'll say this... at least JR isn't still around to dish out this extension. It would have been all the NMC stuff plus another 4 years and 2M a year.

I just don’t see the rush to sign a 37 year old to above market value deals with an NMC.
He's taking a paycut (remember, LAK are paying half his current salary). He's in fantastic shape. Someone 10 years younger would cost more. And his versatility gives the Penguins options.

Yep. Rodrigues is either a Rust replacement, Kapanen replacement, or Zucker replacement, or he goes elsewhere. They can't afford all four, even if Carter didn't re-sign.
