Tough to judge a GM by what they don't do. Especially early in their tenure. So the first year was a write off for me.

The fireable offense was the ROR trade. You couldn't say that at the time, apparently, but now most people respect that perspective. You can't always control the moves that are available to you, but sometimes you get a clear view of stupidity, and that was it. He's just continually failed to redeem himself for it.

I feel like whatever, though. I don't expect there to be accountability, and if there is, I don't expect Pegula is fit to hire a smart hockey person. He gave Lafontaine a job based on a fishing trip, he loudly committed to Darcy and Lindy before he ever worked with them only to buckle because the fans started booing. He's a feel good playboy billionaire who thought his good feels and cash would win cups. He's no better positioned now to lead the franchise. He'll probably sell one day when he gets sufficiently disillusioned.

I get we hate the leafs, and I do too, but the "failures" of those guys would be like an epic victory for the Sabres at this point.

It will be interesting to see how Dubas does with a good team he pretty much inherited. He started putting his stamp on it this past offseason and now with the coaching change.

Guys I have great news: we have reached the top of the Insanely Stupid NHL GM Trade allocation list. The Johnny Hockey for Risto trade will be announced in the morning!

I had this terrible feeling that Botterill’s plan was to wait out all these contracts and now i hope it bites him in the ass and he gets let go. Bringing everyone back was a level of irresponsible I don’t even have a comparison for. It is a fireable offense.

He did nothing as they imploded last year.

Then. He. Retained. Almost. Everyone.

It’s indefensible and unbelievable.

If his plan is to wait out the contracts then you can bet the Pegulas are behind him. The NHL recommended Botts and Botts has been preaching patience. I don't think he is on the hot seat at all.

I think landing Tavares was a great move. He should have signed Matthews and Marner a year a head at the rumored prices, but ehh most on here say overpaying your top guys is no biggie.

Trading Kadri for a poor defensive dman seems questionable.

His ability to get his defense in order will probably decide how people talk about him. I like Sandin and Lilgren, he might just need to get one top 4 guy.

Can I interest Dubie in a slightly used Risto for a soft Nylander?

I dont think the fans are gonna give them much choice, are the Pegulas gonna stand for half empty rinks in January if they dont show something soon?

He's got to be on the hot seat, right? Pretty much all of his acquisitions at forward outside of Johansson and Skinner have failed miserably.

Doubt anyone would put Vesey in the "success" category. Though I'm sure you only included him in some sort of "he hasn't failed because no one expected him to be good in the first place" kinda way.

He's already publicly stated multiple times his daughter will own the Sabres when he steps aside. She lives locally and is raising her family here in WNY, has for years.

If Jeff Skinner hadn't grown up in Toronto and wanted to play near his hometown, Botts would have acquired -2 top six forwards (losing Kane/RoR, bringing none in) over 3 years as GM.

And we have zero offensive potential besides Cozens in the pipeline, but hey, it's great that we used a late first to take a low-ceiling PMD and some second round picks to draft defensive defensemen who will top out as 3rd pairing guys if they even make it to the show at all.

And we're on the verge of pissing away Dahlin's ELC and most likely frustrating the hell out of our best players.

This idiot is running the team into the ****ing ground

There's one tiny glitch in the wait out the contracts plan: so we wait out those contracts and have all that cap space. Great! So we contact good ufa and ask if he's interested and he breaks up laughing and says " You guys are the toilet of pro hockey, you couldn't pay me enough to sign with you" and hangs up the phone. Or he decides to lead us on and give him a huge offer, which he promptly uses to get the best deal from a team he actually wants to go to. OK but what about a trade? So we try to acquire a big name player only to be informed "Sorry, you guys are on my No Trade List so bugger off". There is a price to be paid for stupidity. Oh, and in a few more seasons of missing the playoffs we will end up getting an extra $10 million in cap space when Jack asks out and exactly ZERO people in hockey blame him for doing so.

It doesn't matter how you reached a destination. What matters is arriving at the destination.

Third year. No signs of improvement.

Why is this guy getting any more time?
