If the O'Reilly trade didn't get him fired, then the vesey one should be the cherry on top. How incredibly horrific are those moves?

Vesey cost a third-round pick, that wasn't a franchise altering cost.

And I'm convinced the O'Reilly trade was a result of the Pegula's wanting him gone more than Botterill. They were all about "One Buffalo" and having the right "character" guys on the teams.

I'm not ready to throw Botterill under the bus, I liked that he rebuilt the defense over the summer. Injuries and a tough November are showing the team's weaknesses, but I think the team can recover--there's a lot of depth on the blue-line and hopefully someone non-essential can be off-loaded for scoring depth.

This is some bs right here. Because Sean McDermott is a character guy, that means it translates over to the Sabres? When has the ethos the Bills brass preaches ever crossed over to what the Sabres are doing? Me thinks you are really reaching here.

Agree with most everything here. No direction from Botts and also, the Krueger "friend of the family" hire is getting old. His non-directional, smarter than everyone, rhetoric never struck a chord with me. Say something definitively and be strong about it. Thinking someone his age moving back from Europe can manage a young team that is still in the party phase of life, on a different continent, is beyond understanding. Take the Western Canada roots back to Western Canada please. This team needs the NFL equivalent of Sean McVay or Cliff Kingsbury. Rip the top off of this league and do it different or acquire different personnel. Botts is stale.

Part of me wants him to make a move instead of just talking about it.

Part of me knows every other GM realizes he’s desperate and he’ll do something stupid (again).
I'd rather he doesnt make a big move, the team finishes bottom-10 again, and he gets canned at the end of the year.

I really don't have any answers. I don't know know how they fix this. I don't really understand why they can't win. It's not just the O'Reilly trade, they were terrible with him.

My only guess is coaching. Bylsma was not very good but he was a proven winner. We got our best results with him. I'm not sure why we went away from proven winners at coach after Bylsma.

Botterill needs to go before he makes a big move. Bring in a new front office, let them evaluate and make the next big moves.

Not too worry, I'm sure he's got a great F in mind who can help 'right now' like...Mathieu Perreault. Seems like a Botts kind of 'fit'.

Bylsma was a terrible choice to teach the team to win. He literally was asked to come in and babysit the Penguins to a Stanley Cup while the parent Therrien went out of town. Even though they had regular season success after he failed in the playoffs.

Bylsma failed here because he refused to participate and teach the young players. He took the job because he was out of hockey and needed a way to get back in.

Botterill is failing because he’s his own worst enemy and has terrible roster construction judgement. He consistently puts himself in positions where he backs himself in a corner. He doesn’t seem to have any form of flexibility or plans if something doesn’t go according to plan.

He’s survived strictly because of luck.

If he doesn't survive as GM this season, who is even available? Anyone experienced/competent?

Mike Gillis ready to return to NHL, but not as general manager - Sportsnet.ca

I think that Mike Gillis would be an interesting fit here. And some of the questions about wanting to return as a GM were the same kind of questions about whether Krueger wanted to return to be a head coach.

I think that the way that Gillis talks about wanting to build an organization fits well with what Krueger talks about. And Gillis isn't a rookie.

There are warts to his resume. But, prior to getting the job in Vegas, so did GMGM. Lots of people mocked Vegas for hiring GMGM. And we've seen what they have done since.

Who knows who the exact right hire would be. I just like what I heard on that podcast from Gillis and I think he is the type of person that has prior experience and would fit with the direction the team is going.

I won't blame any of this on Krueger to be honest. He should be able to motivate the players certainly, and he should be able to provide structure....

But when players cannot execute simple plays/passes, refuse to shoot on clear high danger chances, refuse to play the system he had established, and just plain and simple get lost in their own zone..... with now THREE coaches for a few players; it's not the coach. It's the players. Thats on Botterill.

He's burying the lead: WHEN DID THEY RE-SIGN JASON POMINVILLE ?????

Also Nylander didn't play that night...

EDIT: Maybe he's talking about the 4-2 loss against Toronto on Mar 20th? Oh I think I found it, April 2 against Nashville. Pominville and Nylander played that evening. Surprised he didn't go with the worse looking run of 3-17-4.

I thought stockpiling defensemen was a smart prelude to acquiring a legit top-6 forward, without creating a hole elsewhere. Now I learn that making a trade is "difficult" and defensive depth is crucial.

His father is a big-brain professor of sports psychology, right? I'm beginning to think Botts is a living example of "regression to the mean".
