The Oilers are doing just fine playing for the rape GM Stan Bowman.

Winning forgives all. People, right or wrong, move on.

For some....and it doesn't make it right. A lot of people can rationalize supporting someone who they know is a horrible person, that has done horrible things, if they think it benefits them personally somehow.

Hockey culture isn't a great barometer for morality either. That culture is the reason the whole incident in Chicago almost got swept completely under the rug to begin with. Players don't want to rock the boat or upset management.

Some people also deserve and should be given second chances... but many people have different thresholds for where/when that should happen.

Not being argumentative here buddy...just point out why there will never be consensus on these types of things.

I agree people should be given second chances.

But you can be given a second chance to redeem yourself as a human, without being given the same job, with the same responsibilities, before you've done anything publicly to actually redeem yourself.

Feels like the only thing Bowman and Q would have done so far to redeem themselves, is to let a few years pass for it to blow over, offer remorse privately to Bettman, which may or may not be genuine, and beg him to let them be re-instated. That's being given a second chance without earning it.

Yeah, whatever "steps" they've taken to rehabilitate themselves are, like many people in these sorts of situations, intentionally vague, or just flat-out nonexistent.

I promise that Bettman never has, and never will care one iota about what those guys did. He likely cares even less about the perpetrator himself. He and Daly were way, WAY more upset at Rick Westhead for revealing the story, to the point where at the presser following the story's release, they refused to take questions from him, THE REPORTER WHO BROKE THE F***ING STORY, like a couple of goddamned pouting children. It wasn't until Pierre LeBrun forced their hand by deferring to Westhead that he finally got a chance to ask a question.

The only thing Bettman ever cares about is how such things affect league image and revenue, and what the quickest path is toward getting people to forget about it.

It's a shame, but Bettman works for the owners, not the league.

It would be nice if Commissioner of the NHL actually worked for the league and the betterment of the league, but in all seriousness, Bettman's job is to increase the owners bottom line.

I'm not even sure that's his primary goal. I mean, it's obviously one of them, but not the biggest one, because if his job was just to make the league money, then I'd say he's pretty shitty at his job. Yes, the league's revenues have increased substantially during his tenure, but nowhere near the rise of other professional sports in North America.

I'd say his biggest goal is to keep hockey a good ol' boys club without sacrificing too many profits, with his secondary goal of doing everything possible fill the NHL ranks with as many Harvard Law grads as he possibly can. If he had the power to hold HRR hostage until a team hired Peter Chiarelli as GM, he'd do it.

Pretty sure there's a certain poster around here that would love another crack at the can.
