I like Bednar. He has gotten better as he learns how to coach in the NHL. I agree he should not be completely safe. I wish he could make in game adjustments better. I think he was out coached by Deboer twice but I still think he deserves a chance to see this through. I have to think there would be several other teams interested in him if he were to become available. Sometimes it’s on the team and the players too. Does anyone think Craig Berube is a good coach? And yet the Blues won under him. There was a time where I really wanted Gerard Gallant but now he is on the outside looking in. At least the players like Bednar and I don’t think they have tuned him out yet. I personally would like to see a change in assistant coaches before Bednar goes.
It probably wouldn't hurt to hire an assistant coach with head coaching experience who's adept at making in-game adjustments.

If anyone is worried about Bednar having more job security with an extension, don't. Plenty of coaches get shitcanned the same year they get an extension signed. The last one I can remember clearly was Ken Hitchcock in Philly.

In any event, I think this is make-or-break for the venerable head coach, as well it should be. Get past the 2nd round or GTFO. No excuses.

I don't think they will come to a contract extension early on, likely discussing the parameters of a new deal in case things go the way the club wants and then they can quickly strike a deal.

Yeah, an extension could simply be a 1-2 year thing just to avoid having Bednar's status becoming a distraction.

Bednar is one of the best coaches in the entire league (if not the best). The only thing I'd want differently (but who am I to judge tbh), is his adaptability of his sytem to the opposition. We tore Vegas a hole in that first game, so they switched it up, changed their system, and we didn't adapt and go with them. This season, lessons would have been learnt, so look out.

Would definitely keep Bednar. Very solid and unlike many coaches it doesn't look like his shelf life is only a couple of seasons.

Maybe you could get a better coach, but most likely it would be a downgrade. Who is even out there that is simply better?

Yeah… no…. Bednar gets out coached a lot… even by mediocre coaches. To say he even approaches Q or Coop is just asinine.

This is Bednar's last chance, another 2nd round exit that can't be blamed by injuries, where he gets out coached again will be the final straw.

Have a question for you on that. There were 56 games last season in the season proper. Where did we finish?
Yeah, we didn't win the cup, but there were factors outside Bednar's control:

EJ injured all year
Kadri suspended at a crucial time
Francouz injured all year
Calvert injured all year
Byram injured towards the end
Grub carrying too much weight peter'd out.

Those things don't happen to key players, we win the cup imo. I'd not have Q over Bednar, no chance.

Coaches can be elite at some things and not at others. The system he’s employed could not be more perfect for the roster that’s been built. He’s also a lot more experimental and daring than most of his brethren.

That said, he continues to be way too slow when it comes to in-game adjustments. He also took a shockingly conservative approach in the playoffs.

I’d say he’s the best coach at present for this team. Is he the best coach in the league? No, not even close. Quenneville, Trotz, and Cooper are at the top end of that list, but I’d say Bednar is way closer to that than he is the bottom of the list.

I don’t think it takes an elite coach to win a Stanley Cup, it takes elite talent. Sometimes a coach can be outright horrible and if the talent is good enough they can still win it all (Anaheim being the prime example).

That said, he deserves to be the coach and there’s not really anyone outside of the three guys I listed earlier (and I’d be reluctant on Q for reasons that aren’t entirely rational) I’d rather have. Yes, I’d rather have Bednar than Gallant, who IMo is getting just a tad overrated these days. Whether he deserves to be the coach after this season…well, we’ll see.

The Avs were in the worst division in hockey last year… and President’s trophy really doesn’t mean anything. We aren’t the Predators…

Bednar has been out coached in the playoffs each year… and he’s not facing the best of the best that are all in the East.

Agree. Bednar is certainly not the best in the league but he is a great coach nonetheless. He needs to get better at adapting during a game. If he does he could become one of the elites.

The players respond very well to Bednar so all I can say to people that want a new coach right now or even after this season is be very, very careful what you wish for. There are plenty of examples out there of teams that changed a very good coach for a worst one. A coach's message always get stale after a while but we are not there yet with Bednar.

Just because people tell you we were the worst division, doesn't make it so. We had arguably the best team in the league after us in our division in Vegas, so that immediately throws out your argument. The disparity between the best teams and the worst teams in "each division" is more so a valid argument in my opinion (besides maybe north).

What I will say, is AVS (and i'd argue Vegas are better than Tampa) played the best team in the league 8 times (season proper) and split the games 4-4 (50%). I don't think one other team would achieve that. 14% of our season we played the best team in the NHL (arguably) and we still came first overall.

Secondly, I completely disagree with you, that winning the presidents trophy means nothing. It means plenty. It means you were the most consistent team in the season proper (form wise). It means you get home ice advantage (which is real for us).

Bednar had a FINE season last season. Watch him go to another level this one.

If game one has a line of Landeskog-Mackinnon-Rantenan there should be no discussion. As Q used to say when hawking trucks in Denver, "It's time for a line change."
