Bednar’s too soft, we already trashed Roy
Clearly we need to hire Claude Lemieux
It probably wouldn't hurt to hire an assistant coach with head coaching experience who's adept at making in-game adjustments.I like Bednar. He has gotten better as he learns how to coach in the NHL. I agree he should not be completely safe. I wish he could make in game adjustments better. I think he was out coached by Deboer twice but I still think he deserves a chance to see this through. I have to think there would be several other teams interested in him if he were to become available. Sometimes it’s on the team and the players too. Does anyone think Craig Berube is a good coach? And yet the Blues won under him. There was a time where I really wanted Gerard Gallant but now he is on the outside looking in. At least the players like Bednar and I don’t think they have tuned him out yet. I personally would like to see a change in assistant coaches before Bednar goes.
LeBrun says Bednar and the Avs are currently having talks about an extension as he heads into the final year of his contract.
OhOh!! namerus is going to have a heart attack...
Yeah, an extension could simply be a 1-2 year thing just to avoid having Bednar's status becoming a distraction. If anyone is worried about Bednar having more job security with an extension, don't. Plenty of coaches get shitcanned the same year they get an extension signed. The last one I can remember clearly was Ken Hitchcock in Philly.
In any event, I think this is make-or-break for the venerable head coach, as well it should be. Get past the 2nd round or GTFO. No excuses.
Yeah… no…. Bednar gets out coached a lot… even by mediocre coaches. To say he even approaches Q or Coop is just asinine.Bednar is one of the best coaches in the entire league (if not the best). The only thing I'd want differently (but who am I to judge tbh), is his adaptability of his sytem to the opposition. We tore Vegas a hole in that first game, so they switched it up, changed their system, and we didn't adapt and go with them. This season, lessons would have been learnt, so look out.

Have a question for you on that. There were 56 games last season in the season proper. Where did we finish?
Yeah, we didn't win the cup, but there were factors outside Bednar's control:
EJ injured all year
Kadri suspended at a crucial time
Francouz injured all year
Calvert injured all year
Byram injured towards the end
Grub carrying too much weight peter'd out.
Those things don't happen to key players, we win the cup imo. I'd not have Q over Bednar, no chance.
Agree. Bednar is certainly not the best in the league but he is a great coach nonetheless. He needs to get better at adapting during a game. If he does he could become one of the elites.Coaches can be elite at some things and not at others. The system he’s employed could not be more perfect for the roster that’s been built. He’s also a lot more experimental and daring than most of his brethren.
That said, he continues to be way too slow when it comes to in-game adjustments. He also took a shockingly conservative approach in the playoffs.
I’d say he’s the best coach at present for this team. Is he the best coach in the league? No, not even close. Quenneville, Trotz, and Cooper are at the top end of that list, but I’d say Bednar is way closer to that than he is the bottom of the list.
I don’t think it takes an elite coach to win a Stanley Cup, it takes elite talent. Sometimes a coach can be outright horrible and if the talent is good enough they can still win it all (Anaheim being the prime example).
That said, he deserves to be the coach and there’s not really anyone outside of the three guys I listed earlier (and I’d be reluctant on Q for reasons that aren’t entirely rational) I’d rather have. Yes, I’d rather have Bednar than Gallant, who IMo is getting just a tad overrated these days. Whether he deserves to be the coach after this season…well, we’ll see.
The Avs were in the worst division in hockey last year… and President’s trophy really doesn’t mean anything. We aren’t the Predators…
Bednar has been out coached in the playoffs each year… and he’s not facing the best of the best that are all in the East.
