Crystal ball:

JS captains USA at next WJHC

JS wins top Defenseman or MVP

HF Boards declares that it would have been Drysdale but he was too busy playing in the NHL, so JD was still the better pick

I've been sitting on this thought for a while now...but the heck with it.

Owen Power is vastly overrated.

Overrated in the sense that he's the default #1 overall pick but in a normal year he probably goes in the same range as Sanderson.

Expexting him to overtake Chabot as a rookie is a pretty high expectation. I’d agree with the modification to second pairing left defenseman.
Dorion expects him to eat more minutes...in time. Sure, it may be a stretch to say he will be doing that by the end of his first year in the NHL, but I think it plausible given his current trajectory.

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot-Zaitsev

That's not far-out as possibilities go. The stronger defensive pair logging the most 5 v 5 minutes and tough match-ups. I don't see Brannstrom getting the top 4 minutes over Sanderson.

One of the strongest drafts in years and the top defenceman selected - top 5 OA - would it really be so crazy?

Yes, 100% it would be crazy to expect a rookie to step in and supplant the guy who lead the NHL in TOI/GP last year and is third in TOI/GP this year (and trending up).

Yeah, if Sanderson comes in and plays more minutes than Chabot, he's probably a favourite to win the Norris at an insanely young age. One can dream but that ain't happening.

Sanderson - Zub if it happens tomorrow, will be a rock solid first pair almost on any NHL team. LOL
Zub is a revelation really and he is the best player to play alongside and it will be huge for Sanderson's future development. Not the college.

I see him hitting 25 min/game 50-60 games. Karlsson did the same and then took some time to heat up to start his second year.

I guess we'll see many moons from now.

Look at Toews. In his draft year the guy had an unbelievable performance in NCAA and the allusion to Sanderson here made was during Toews draft year: Commentary: Jake Sanderson has his 'Jonathan Toews Game' in NCHC final | Grand Forks Herald

Yet Toews went back to NCAA another year(albeit it was his D+1) but the point still stands he was ready for NHL and went back anyway. What happened after that? Elite right off the bat.

Look at Hanifin, not that far off performance from Sanderson this year in his draft year, could be considered somewhat similar calibre prospects during their draft and Hanifin made the jump to the NHL when he should have went back one more year at least. Now Hanifin is still a legit top 4 but his offense hasnt translated as expected and he isn't the calibre player as expected.

We took our time with Chabot and look how that worked out.

The only way Sanderson should be a Senator next year is if he is forcing the Sens hand and it is his choice fully. Otherwise, there should be NO reason we should want that. I have never seen a defender stagnate due to taking an extra season of development but I have seen them coming a tad too early. Plus, next year we still look to be a disaster, let him take his time and join the Sens with more talent and stability.

The only twisted argument I can see from Sens side is if he comes over earlier, and his offense takes a little longer to develop but that allows us to cash in on a much cheaper deal making him worth much more than what his contract is. Stupid to even think and not worth potential top 5-10 D asset.

I'd much rather see Sanderson go back. Play 25 minutes a night in UND, play ALL situations, work on his puck control and dominate his peers, captain USA and compete for another Gold and best D honors, then step in to Ottawa in April ready for top 4 duty right off the bat a la Makar with all the confidence in the world.

I believe Power will turn into a Erik Johnson esc player, solid player no doubt but he doesn’t posses any skill to elevate him above his peers.
Could be a 27 min top pairing two way 6’6” defender within a few years. Not too shabby.
He’s from Mississauga though. Don’t like that.
Not that it means a whole lot but he’s already got the same kind of numbers as cam York this year. York is pretty good and 2 years older.
A bit harder to find than a goal scorer fwiw

D would be set and one of if not the tops in the league. You know, if he reached his potential. Need goal scoring too though.

Trust in the Mann

If the Sens take a defenceman with their first pick in the 2021 draft I think they take Brandt Clarke RD & not Owen Power LD. If they decide to take a forward I think it will be Dylan Gunther RW & if they take a centre it could be between Beniers C & Johnson C & I have Beniers ahead by a hair. I like Dylan Guenther the best but my guess is that the Sens draft Brandt Clarke RD with their first pick.

Clarke is too big of a risk for where this team is likely to pick. Lots of talent but there's a pretty big bust factor there imo.

Not saying these guys have it right .. but I think if he shines at the U18 worlds .. he'll still be in Mckenzies the top 5. That's well in the Sens range for this year's draft. I have to think they think hard on him if nothing else. I don't think there are too many players on their list ahead of him.

They sure as hell know better than I do. Just the way I see it, Boom/Bust guy with some things in his game I'd rather not see from a top 5 pick. He could easily overcome those deficiencies but it would make me nervous taking him in that spot.

I am way down on my prospect porn this year - what deficiencies do you see?

Figured his good season and improved play as time went on overseas might have him moving up.

For every "success" story where a highly touted player was kept down for 2 years after the draft, there's just as many guys that were brought in after one where they turned out to be stellar players. We remember the few times that someone busted and blame it on rushing, but ignore all the other variables like, maybe the guy wasn't really NHL star calibre and nothing would change that. We also can't disprove the benefit to guys like Makar because there's nothing to show that it would've been bad since they didn't play in D+1. And how many guys stay down for years to get experience, only to fizzle away from memory because they never did crack the lineup?

Jonathon Toews would have been the same player no matter when you brought him in. He might not have had the same numbers starting as a 19 year old that he did at 20, but I have no doubt he'd still be the stud he became regardless.

It's all case by case. Cale Makar came from the AJHL and was 170 lbs when drafted. Colorado already had a very good but young and small defenceman in Samuel Girard, and the last thing you want are a couple of tiny green D learning to play in the NHL at the same time.

On that note, Girard is the same age as Makar and had 2 full years of NHL experience before Makar was done with college. He seems to be doing ok.
