Never ever rush a defenseman.

Best thing for his career is to play another year in the NCAA or play in Belleville.

Playing in Ottawa is one hell of a challenge right now, even for a veteran blueliner. Make sure he has all the tools possible, and a few more pounds of muscle, before playing here. Give him the best chance possible to succeed.

Rush is relative. When Provorov and Werinski were brought up in their D+2 years, they weren't being rushed, they were ready. This is Brannstrom's D+4, some would say we'd be guilty of rushing him by playing him this year.

I agree.. I am normally pretty conservative about "rushing" a player.. but imo Sanderson is ready.. I still think he could develop some things in the NCAA but he can play and play effectively in the NHL imo. Either way .. he'll be ok imo.. If he has to play in Belleville a bit vs in ND .. that's doable too.

All our young D have the same issues when their brought in.. Insulation. 2/3 of Our right side are not very good. Be great if that could be addressed.

Seeing Sanderson return as the defacto number 1 D and captain of USA in WJC is going to be an exciting, exciting time to keep track of. Especially if he plays with teammate and future Senator pick Luke Hughes/Beniers.

Imagine Wright/Lambert/Savoie, Sanderson, and Beniers/Hughes/Clarke/Guenther breaking into the NHL at same time.

If yall thought this season was fun, two years from now could be riveting. I want us to improve next year but top 3 selection has some silver lining lol.

That's why it's a case by case basis.

For Bran, I think the problem is the LD RD thing...and a bit of mobility/speed issues.

Seems that Sanderson could play tomorrow and legitimately be a better option than some current roster defensemen if the Sens wanted him to. I’d rather see him further develop at UND.

You see his offensive confidence right now, it’s like a smoking volcano. Send him back for another year, let him QB PP1, let him dominate in a more offensive and leadership role at the WJHC, let him benefit from the lighter college schedule to put on muscle and physically develop, that confidence will erupt.

If Sanderson plays in the national championship like he did in the NCHC final, he should be a pro next year. He was simply too good for the competition in that game.
He will be going back to a bare bones UND team next year. And some say great let him carry the team. But I feel like no d man could carry that team. And I don’t think that would be all that great for his development. And even if UND is good next year. What’s he gonna gain from literally never breaking a sweat defensively, which he hasn’t since he got back from the WJC.

I feel like these two statements are contradictory.

I wonder if, on a personal level, he never got to experience a year of college (actually physically going to classes) and never got to play in that arena filled with fans. The place would have been a madhouse during the third period Tuesday. Recruits experience that on recruiting trips and probably look forward to it, and this sterile year has not been what they signed up for.

That would be because you cut out the context right before the second statement lol.

if UND is terrible. Not sure thats any better for his development than coming to play pro.

if UND is good. Also not sure how that’s good for his development as he may be able to play in a rocking chair.

Ah, ok, my mistake.

Surely there’s somewhere in the middle?

What's different between Sanderson going back to the NCAA for a second season, and Makar? Anything different about UND and UMass?

UMass was a mediocre team Makar's first year and one of the top teams in the country for his second. Sanderson's first year has been on a powerhouse and next year, UND is going to lose a lot of talent.

If he goes back it could end up being a lot like Brock Boeser's two years at UND. During Boeser's first year UND was a powerhouse but the next, they were so-so. Boeser ended up putting up lesser numbers in year two, but it's not like that killed his development. Great players will find a way to be great. People will always point to Lazar and Ceci as reasons not to rush players. Those guys had such limited hockey sense they were never going to be anything special.

I personally think he's proven himself enough at that level and is ready to go pro. As the World Juniors went on, it was clear that he was one of the best d-man at the tourney. As his college season has gone on, it's clear he's one of the best d-men in the nation. It's fine for him to go back for another season, but I do think he's ready to move on.

Lazar and Ceci did have meh hockey sense but you could also tell that they were losing confidence playing in the NHL so quickly.

Sanderson has untapped offensive potential and should play in a league where he is able to develop that by trying risky/creative plays. It's a kind of skill building that will not be so easy to accomplish in the NHL, where he will be pushed on to play mistake free hockey against the best hockey players in the world.

I'm not saying that he can't develop his offence in the NHL, just that it would be more difficult.

I would like to see Sanderson in the AHL next year personally. I want them to have a strong year - compete for the play-offs etc..

Sanderson needs to fill out.

One more year of college is perfect for him. That UND environment has aided the development of a couple of future mainstays (Pinto and JBD), so stay the course.

The goal of the UND staff is to develop the players effectively enough that they don't need the AHL time. With JBD and Pinto, any AHL time will be cups of coffee.

2021: Sanderson dominates college and WJC
2022: Emerges as Senators top pairing left-defenceman
