I am way down on my prospect porn this year - what deficiencies do you see?

Figured his good season and improved play as time went on overseas might have him moving up.

I would say his commitment to defense and decision making at times with the puck at least in my limited viewings. He is extremely talented and it's not hard to see who he grew up idolizing but along with the high upside, it would be high risk.

Some of these guys have a different opinion including Bob McKenzie.
Brandt Clarke | Brandt Clarke Profile | Brandt Clarke Scouting Report 2021 (mynhldraft.com)

What's funny here is that I'm the one who is always accused of being obsessed with size & physical hockey & not liking skill.

I really like Clarke but his skating concerns me a little. I feel defenceman who want to play a dynamic game in the NHL almost need to have that dynamic skating ability. Which I'm not sure Brandt has yet. Maybe he develops it, maybe he doesn't, but I do agree that he is a little risky if we are talking top 3 as of now.

However I still don't mind taking him top 3. These kids can develop a lot after their draft years so I wouldn't be surprised if he follows the Karlsson and Makar precedent. A bigger, stronger, faster Clarke could be something big.

I don't know a damn thing about the player, never seen him play.

But one doesn't develop the ability to be a dynamic skater at 18. At that point, you either are or are not.

What you can do is develop from not good enough to good enough, but not from not dynamic to dynamic

Remember Chabot in junior and at the WJC?

Did you catch the comment last night about Formenton?? Mitch Marner saying Formenton was the best skater he ever played against in junior.

I'll go all the way back to watching Brian Campbell play for the 67s

Dynamic skating ability at the NHL level just isn't something that develops at 18.

Sanderson - Zub if it happens tomorrow, will be a rock solid first pair almost on any NHL team. LOL
Zub is a revelation really and he is the best player to play alongside and it will be huge for Sanderson's future development. Not the college.

.

Im not sure I like Clarke in the top 3 but I get an ever increasing feeling that barring a lottery win we will be picking in the 4-7 range which is definitely where I think it would start to make sense to take him. I think we also could surprise people and take a LD as both Brannstrom and Sanderson have shown their ability to play either side.

Sanderson was filling in for JBD on the right side for the past two games and he was also being double shifted on the right side in the WJC so it's definitely something he feels comfortable doing.

The prospect thread on the main board runs off the tracks because of a few posters...

Anyways, the NCAA tournament kicks off tomorrow for UND vs. American International.

He has points in 5 of his last 6 games and looking at their opponent, I don't recognize many names. Looking forward to seeing how he and the other guys fare.

Without a guarantee of 10 games it's highly unlikely he'd sign. He and his camp will be asking for a push of his ELC, and this year he'd need to play 10 games, whereas next April he needs a single game.

With UND getting knocked out early and the govt easing the quarantine restrictions, it's likely he could get the games in this season to burn the first year of his ELC. I suspect he'll sign soon.

He's a beast.

Another significant reason I want him back in NCAA is because due to the long breaks in between games, he can improve his skills AND, more important, his physique so that he can come in NHL ready from get go vs full NHL season or AHL season next year.

Many rushes he had were excellent, but you can see that extra gear you know he is missing but capable of with more experience and reign in offensive zone.

I think the easing of restrictions to 7 days only applies to guys traded from NHL to NHL. I can't see it impacting the guys from UND

As it stands, if we were to sign them today there would be about a dozen games after they finish their quarantine. They'd need to play seven to burn a year of their ELC

Quarantine is for NHL players isn’t it? And he still would need to dress for 7 games, Sens likely wouldn’t cross that barrier.

Jake is like a new player. His development since the WJC has been amazing. I wanted Drysdale, but I think Jake's ceiling is slightly higher because of his two-way game. Both supremely talented players.

He’s always much faster than I think he’s going to be, he’s got dancing shoes for skates.

I think it could go either way with Sanderson, might be better for him to return to school for another yr & dominate, but he could also turn pro since he already looks better than some of the defencemen we have. Another yr in school to fill out & dominate might help Ottawa as much as it helps him, we wouldn't want him not ready for the physical play in the NHL.

It should be 7 anyway. The 14 day quarantine is from very early days on the pandemic when little was understood and obviously the general population wasn’t getting daily rapid tests. If the players are getting tested daily then 7 days is enough.
