Muzzin is a major reason the Kings are about to win the cup.

Remember that Doughty Regehr pairing for a bit?

Exactly.

I know we all talked about Voynov's development being a reason as to why the Kings were able to move Johnson, and that is how it played out, but looking at how everything has played out, Muzzin has become the player the Kings were hoping to get when they acquired Johnson, and he's been better.

And to top it all off, the Kings got him for free. That's some damn good scouting to be able to add a guy who can play on your top defense pairing that cost the organization nothing to bring in.

Agreed.

I think Muzzin has been the most underrated/appreciated player during this run.

Has made many key defensive plays and has scored some big goals.

Muzzin still has those atrocious games where he makes a bad error, gets freaked, then it spirals. It used to be every 2-3 games but now it's far more infrequent.

He's been as solid as anyone as the playoffs have went on. I think seeing how the vets react when things go wrong has helped him immensely. Hell, just the businesslike and calm atmosphere of this team makes me not freak out when things look bleak, and I'm not even in the locker room. I was completely relaxed down 4-2 in game 2, in past years I would have been ready to jump from the 300's.

I think the sketchy, turnover machine Muzzin won't be making many more appearances from here on out. IMO He has grown more than any other player this year.

VIndication feels so good.

I agree entirely in Muzzin being a big time player for us. He has even exceeded my expectations of him which have always been pretty high.

Yup. Physically the guy is just a horse also. Playing a ton of minutes and I've seen him absolutely manhandle some fantastic players in one on one battles this postseason.

That was the big thing when he was being developed. Physically he had the whole package but he needed to mature the mental part of the game.

Said it since day one, Muzzin has always had the tools. His brain just needed to catch up. Muzzin was the whole package in Manchester, he just had the same problems with confidence.

He is starting to understand that mistakes happen, it's how you rebound that matters.

A fair market contract for Muzzin?

You feeling alright black63? This isn't like you to be throwing around such insane contract amounts.

:)

I'm fine thanks, but are you ok? I thought for sure you'd want to pay Muzz somewhere in the 5M range since he's on the 1st pairing.

Muzzin is easily the second best D on the team. Gets better and better. He also shows up for the big games -- his best ever was game 7 against SJ.

I preferred the playoff Muzzin to the regular season Muffin... Sure he had his share of brain farts early on...but they seemed to disappear near the end... The only way he can go is UP from here on...but it will be hard to get rid of that Muffin moniker...

His 2 best plays were smashing his face into that Sharks' guys elbow and drawing the call, and tripping that NYR guy and getting a call... His brain farts didn't go away... he just channeled his inner Muffin and used it for good. Just hope the refs don't catch on.

He didn't trip Zuccarello; that was brain-dead commenting by NBC. Muzzin keeps the puck in, plants on his right foot to go to his left and walk around his man at the point, Zuccarello tries to get a piece of Muzzin and gets only leg-on-leg. Seriously, who tries to trip someone with their leg while they're getting past their man?

Sorry... seen Muzzin too much to believe that. He panicked... didn't know if he'd get the puck.. thought Zucc would get a breakaway and Muzzin stepped to the right to get a piece so Zucc wouldn't get a clean break... Taking a tripping penalty was the better option.... then Muzzin came up with the puck.. forgot about his leg being out and went down drawing the penalty... that I believe the Kings scored on.

There have been a ton of bad calls against the Kings, but this one went our way.

Some previous bad calls...

Van series.... just the whole thing was bad...

Browns "dive" on getting a 2 handed hack above the knee by Smith... Do an experiment hit someone 2-3 inches above the knee in the back with a hockey stick... it causes the knee to buckle....

Quicks "dive" where one of the Sharks gave him a tracheotomy.

Perry's penalty shot from playing with a broken stick. Where the replay shows Perry adjust his hands to keep his stick together after he felt the break.

Yep. Here's the footage. Zuccarello wasn't even playing the puck. Where's his stick? There was no place for Muzzin to go. He may have embellished, but had he not gone down the Kings have a clear advantage if he's stays upright with the puck and Zuccarello leaving the zone.

Despite your warped narrative of the Zuccarello play, you can't have had your eyes open during these playoffs if you believe those were Muzzin's two best plays. He was outstanding. You can color it various degrees of good if you want, even average if you're reaching, but to suggest those were his best moments is shudder-worthy. Sorry.

MUZZIN + DOUGHTY is a great pairing because with all the attention paid to DEWY, Often times it leaves his partner wide open in the slot... whenever Scuderi got that puck in the slot.. he would just wussy it safely around the boards and not shoot.. same w/ regehr. However Muzzin who actually has some offensive upside will put up some points.

I think dewy is experienced enough not to need that safety blanket partner... it's more helpful for this team to someone like Muzzin to put some pucks in the net or make a nifty pass to a forward.

The Zucc one happened game 5 (elimination game) with about 12 left in the 3rd. The penalty led to Gaborik's PP goal to tie the game and send it to OT where Martinez scores. The Kings would have won that series anyways, but that was a very important goal as far as closing out the series.

The elbowing on Logan was in the game 7, in the second. Doughty's goal on the ensuing power play tied the game. Kings went on to win I think 5-1, but at the time that was a huge goal.

From a skill stand point those were not his best 2 plays. From shifting the momentum in the game stand point. Both of those penalties led to tying goals that helped the Kings clinch both series. So yeah, I would argue they were 2 of his biggest plays.

On the clip can you go back another 10 sec where it's a 50:50 puck and Muzzin sticks his leg out when he doesn't know if he's going to come up with it. If that is Muzzin's normal stance he needs to correct it before he comes up with a knee injury from having his leg so far out. Any other player maybe... But I've seen Muzzin panic way too much to believe he didn't initially try and get a piece of Zucc.

Edit: Looking at the clip I see 3 NYR players behind Zucc... So he had plenty of support behind him and no need to take Muzzin down if he didn't come up with the puck.

Edit: For fun since this is the Muzzin thread. I'd say there's a decent chance we see Muzzin traded after this season. He's up for a new contract and probably going to be looking around Voynov money. Now keep in mind Lombardi's plan for the D this last year was
RR/DD
WM/VV
JM/MG
That was before RR, and WM had trouble keeping up with DD and Muzzin got tossed in there. If the choice is between Muzzin making 4+ and a 230+ UFA vet for a similar cap hit I'm not sure which way Lombardi will go.

I love the Muffin. Kid has only improved since he's been up. He's a good partner for Doughty and takes direction from coaching staff.

Solid two thumbs up from me.

2013: Wide open net in Game 6 at San Jose. Muzzin sends it 30 feet over the net.

2014: Wide open net in Game 6 v. Anaheim. Buries it.

Lot more to the difference between playoff runs for Muzzin, but this sums it up for me. It's all confidence.

Blueline scoring will look nice this year if Voynov can shake off last season's shooting percentage figures.

One of the best things about Muzz...even if he goofs and it becomes a goal, he has such a great shot he can get it right back.
