I realize it is still early but if the 2012 NHL draft was done tomorrow I would take Jacob Trouba first overall!

Players like Hertl, Galchenyuk, Rielly, and yes Yakupov and Murray still look to be solid picks but for my money I take Trouba.

Jacob Trouba, along with many of our other (sleeper) draft picks, is the main reason why I believe Chevy and True North will bring us the team we (Jets fans) deserve in the long run as long as we remain patient and committed.

^^ I think if a redraft happened Galchenyuk would go first overall (he might have gone first even in his draft year had he not been injured). But I can see Trouba easily going 2nd overall. A while ago there was a scout poll and the consensus had Trouba upto #4th overall in a potential redraft and this was before Trouba made his NHL debut!

The best part about Trouba is how well his offensive game has come around. His defense, size or physicality was never a question, even back in his draft year. The knock against him was if he could develop his offensive game enough to be a #1 2-way defenseman in the NHL. At this point it is safe to say that Trouba has done a great job with his offensive game, his rushes and some of the dangles/pretty plays he tries to make are almost Byfuglien/Subban esque without the high risk game of Buff/Subban. I would even say that Trouba has passed Bogosian in terms of his offensive abilities

I could see it going:

Galchenyuk
Lindholm
Trouba
Murray

The rest

Interesting and you stole my thunder. I would flip Lindholm and Trouba and I don't have Gally much above Jacob. The reality is we backed into a "lottery pick" level player out of the 9 spot and we should drop and kiss the ground for our good fortune.

Yak is still a REALLY talented kid but he is too flakey (risky) for me to put above that group in a redraft.

And that's why you couldn't wipe the smile off Chevy's face at the 2012 draft after he got Trouba at #9.

Some picks you would run to the podium to make if they let you. For the Jets it has been Trouba and I sense they felt that way about getting Petan in the 2nd (Zinger did for sure).

similar to Nashville with Jones last year.....they seemed to be in shock that he fell to them.

Yakupov is the biggest 1st Round draft bust since Patrick Stefan. He is horrible, and a big jerk outside and inside the rink.

:biglaugh: Last I checked, players didn't bust a year in a half after they're drafted. I mean, if we use this logic, Trouba has already peaked.

I'm old enough to have faint memories of this guy:

Not making a direct comparison. But there are elements of Trouba's game and his raw skill that remind me of #4.

Trouba reminds me of Phil Housley when he has the puck but with more of an edge when he doesn't.

Trouba has 7 goals already in only 33 games. Only Mike Giordano has that many goals in under 35 games among defenseman. 7 goals over 33 games project to 10,6 goals over 50 games (him playing injury-free this season). IMO, this isn't unrealistic at all as he got better and better as the season went on and still gets better on a daily basis.

11 goals over 50 games would put him in second spot in defenseman goal scoring with Karlsson and Buff only behind Weber.... in his rookie season.

Any more questions about his offensive abilities?

What I find most shocking is that he just kind of picked up style wise from where he left off at Michigan. I thought the NHL would beat that risk reward style out of him a bit or at least water it down. Two goals against Edmonton from in front of the goal mouth shows the kid has confidence that he can make a play, the fact the coach's are letting it happen is a very positive sign. To be fair both plays were opprotunistic situations where there were only 4 Jets on the ice and the D is more likely to activate to join the rush but his instincts for when the opponent is vulnerable are elite and almost bizarre for a 19 year old defender.

When Zach broke into the league he had 9 goals in 47 games, before being injured. Then 10 goals in 81 the following year. Has consistently scored 5 since then. I believe there is a lot of untapped offensive potential with Zach.

That said, Troubs should continue to show a strong offensive side and put up good numbers too. :D

on the one hand I liked what PoMo had to say about his game re: he'll learn to tone it down a bit and play more like a Lidstrom where you make the good 10 ft pass 90% of the time and the other 10% establishes greatness (to paraphrase)

on the other hand I look to Jacob's left and am perfectly happy with him rushing the puck up the ice as much as possible :)

To me Trouba has a much more natural calmness about his offensive game.

Instincts , not hesitating , finding the right spot , creating on his own , all much smoother .

I have little doubt with a couple years of experience Trouba will be a true #1 that has learned to flawlessly pick his spots.

Personally I can't wait until a few years down the road when he gets stronger. I think a lot more of his game will open up with some more physical strength.

That is a great quote from PoMo the good news is that Jacob already shows signs of knowing how to execute that 10 foot pass he just needs to tweak his ratio and grow into it. Your second point is spoken for truth because as long as he has the boat anchor with him I say "RUN FOREST RUN"

Going to try to listen to PM's presser today , I think he said something along the lines of they/he wants Trouba to have the puck , get the puck in their own end as much as and as soon as possible.

He's starting to get noticed in Toronto

@DarrenDreger: The more I watch Jacob Trouba, the more convinced I am he's a strong Calder contender. 20+ mins in 25 of 35 games played. Turns 20 in Feb.

This goes pretty well with Pierre LeBrun saying he was putting Trouba on his Calder Trophy ballot. That's two votes at least.

I wouldn't count him out because on top of being the biggest minute muncher of any rookie, going into last night’s game Jacob was 2nd in PPG average for Rookie D men on pace for 40 points adjusted for an 82 game schedule. Jacob has accomplished that really lofty level without being on the #1 PP unit and he has done it with a constantly rotating D partner. I know his advanced stats might not be all that quite yet but he has played allot with Stuie who tends to hurt his partners numbers.

Either way it’s just an award that is MacKinnon's to lose at this point but when the dust settles we will still have Trouba on our roster with that other rookie for the next decade or more and that is allot bigger than a trophy!
