I think he probably tried to hit him with the elbow and didn't care where it landed.

Fortunately for Rodrigues, it caught him mostly in the shoulder.

I don't know what the protocol is for punishing pure intent that didn't really connect. Whatever it is, give him that I guess.

Agreed. Losing because of bad call. Weak.
But this thread is more about Trouba being a scum bag.
As Marty Baron just said on Sirius . "Im OK with the 2 minutes, but Trouba is the chicken wing man and had Neces not ducked in the last series Trouba would have got 20 games.
He goes for the head .....he just missed on this one.
But off topic....why is he the captain if the Rangers with all those great players and leaders. Troubas game is ass. He's trash.
I don’t disagree and have said such, Trouba is a scumbag on the ice. This string of responses started with a poster posting in this thread that the NHL was rigging the game for the Rangers.

if we're going to be talking chicken wings and intent to injure, should rodrigues face the same hypothetical consequences for his attempt to do the EXACT SAME THING to Wennberg at the start of the game? Only difference is rodrigues missed completely
The thread has been awful quiet in the replies to this

Love the idea that Rodrigues took a dive during a prime scoring chance. As if the PP was going to be a better option that being in front of the goalie, alone, with the puck.
He no longer had the puck. Instead, he held his head (contact was to the shoulder) and started at the ice and counted to 100 to sell the major.

Didn’t miss a shift.

Probably learned that from his buddy, Tkachuk who went full Bobby Orr when Trouba held his arm briefly.

Pretty significant difference when we're talking about headshots, wouldn't you agree?

Also, by the looks of it......even if Rodrigues did connect there, boy would Wennberg's hip be bruised today eh? Devastating impact.

you have people in here calling for Trouba's suspension just based on the intent. What is Rodrigues' attempt here? I'll continue to post it since nobody has given me close to a thoughtful response.

Edit: 2nd clip non-geolocked for our canadian friends

Jacob Trouba sneaky elbow strikes again. Amazing how the refs only gave a 2 minutes on this one. I have no idea how he wasn't kicked out of the game... I guess Trouba's reputation as a "squeaky clean player" came through for him here. Joke of a call by the refs.

Watching from reverse he got shoulder first, that's not a 5 minute or a suspension.

Wish I could offer more input, but alas.

LIke I said earlier though, if that screenshot you posted was any indication, it didn't look like Rodrigues was aiming for the head at all. Can't say the same for Trouba.

Yeah, the big issue is the guy falling to the ice. It is definitely not the guy running around trying to injure people because he sucks at actually playing hockey.

Hey now, that guy's the Mark Messier Leadership Award winner!

I bet he knows a thing or two about playing hockey, c'mon now. :sarcasm:

It's essentially the same play except for two things.

(1) Rodrigues completely mistimes it, while Trouba doesn't.
(2) There's a difference in heights at play. Wennberg is 6'2". Rodrigues is 5'11". Trouba is 6'3". If you're Rodrigues and you stick out your arm, trying to take up more lateral space as Wennberg goes around you at his full height, all you're going to do is get Wennberg's arm just above the elbow. If you're Trouba and you stick out your arm, trying to take up more lateral space as Rodrigues goes around you slightly bent over, you're going to get Rodrigues' upper shoulder which has the potential to ride up into his head.

The intent is the same... to try to ensure contact by taking up more lateral space after you've committed to a hit where the player is evading. I don't think either player was aiming for the other guy's head. Should Trouba be more aware of that size difference in 2024's NHL? I think, probably yes.

I've said this about a lot of Trouba's hits as a Rangers fan. Most of them are legal within the rules, or like this one are a 2 minute penalty, but I often question whether or not the rules need to be stricter about this kind of stuff. Also, his ability to time these things aside, the only reason why Trouba has to do this is because he's not quick enough to read and react to a guy coming at him with speed. If he was, there would be no arm extension... he'd just light the guy up in the middle of the ice.

Rodriguez tried to elbow him in the body for sure. I am not sure how that makes yet another blatant attempt by Trouba to elbow someone in the head any better though, even if you somehow convince yourself that Rodriguez was going for the head. Even kids realize quickly that "he did it too" is not a defense that flies.

Mods, can we change up title in OP to make it factually correct. To “Jacob Trouba Chicken Wing Shoulder/Neck Shot Elbow On Rodrigues”. This is not even me trying to be funny

Does look that way. Trouba clearly had intent to get the head but he missed and got the shoulder.
Nah, what youre seeing is a last ditch forearm to impede a player from beating him. This is such a nothingburger but since its trouba this thread will last a while
