Jack Eichel is quietly becoming a top-5 player in the league

Matthews and Eichel are about as comparable as they come, it’s pretty foolish to claim one is a top 10 player and the other absolutely is not. Maybe through a select 20 game stretch, but certainly not over their careers.

Homer fan of Leaf, but big fan of both. To me it was always going to be Mathews and Eichel battling for who is better.

One thing I love about Eichel is his shot. He just stays standing and blasts it.

Ever since I saw that video of him in his draft year, shotgunning a beer and saying "Im coming for YOU Buffalo!" Ive had a sweet spot for him.

I'd still give quite the amount of respect for his scoring prowess. It's true that he's not as visibly impactful player as Eichel but when Matthews has the puck in the opponents end it's electrifying. He's one of the most talented goal-scorers in the game and for me it holds a lot of weight.

The thing is that this year, Eichel is going toe-to-toe with him in goal-scoring, and he's leapfrogged him defensively. (Eichel still hasn't been quite as consistent as you'd like to see in terms of playing physical and being strong defensively, but he's been growing year over year and is definitely ahead of Matthews in those aspects of the game.) Plus, Eichel's always been the better skater and playmaker, as well as one of the best transition players in the NHL.

Not that this will necessarily always be the case (because no doubt Matthews is an extremely talented kid), but if you could add 1 of the 2 to play a game tomorrow, I think Eichel is the clear choice.

He is a hell of a player and Buffalo is lucky to have him. Looks dangerous every time he's on the ice.

I think if you can fly like McDavid you don't need a fantastic shot and if you have a fantastic shot like Matthews you don't need to fly - it is Eichel's ability to be second best at both that makes him so much fun to watch - NBC should catch on.

It'll be a long time until he gets his due since the Toronto based media had him as a bust behind their glory boy Matthews. They'll hold out admitting they were wrong as long as they can. Once the first outlet admits the truth, look for the rest of the sheep to follow suit accordingly... All pretending they were the first with the scoop.

Eichel is a top ten player. He is still kind of underrated. I mean who has his lack of a supporting cast amongst the other star players?

For instance, he has four point less than Pastrnak in one and a half period's extra play. That is with Reinhart and a rookie in Olofsson as his linemates. It's very likely that playing with Bergeron and Marchand might account for four points extra at least.

Or imagine if he had a Draisaitl to play around with?

Edit: Make that four points...

Another 3 point night for Eichel, almost like he's a beast or something...

Eichel is becoming a premier power forward center. His defensive game is vastly improving, his ability to maintain possession by shielding the puck with pure strength is fast approaching off the charts status, he's using his body with solid checking and taking the body more.

When combined with his shot, passing skills and on ice vision, he's definitely looking top 5 in players in the NHL.

Quite unconsistent scoring.
Unconsistent, like your grammar :)

Seriously, though, Eichel is becoming the player everyone thought he’d become. He’s a guy with a glutton of tools, and I’d imagine it’s pretty hard to figure out which is the perfect tool to use in a certain situation, but it seems that he has finally figured it out. But damn, it’s been fun to watch.

just hope he can avoid injuries last year he was pacing very well til he got injured for 2 then took a bit to get going again afterwards.

he is First Place in the NHL in offensive zone possession. (Aprox 33 mins)

He is First Place in the NHL in transition (end to end rushes) (I believe it was high 60’s)

He is third place in total offensive zone entries (this was in the high 160’s)

He’s been in on just under half his teams total offense (38 of 85 goals)

He’s on a 10 game point streak (9 goals and 20 points in that time)

38 pts, 17 g 21 a in total. He’s three points away from 300 points in the 315 he’s played in. (With bad injuries and Awful teams)

He’s tied for fourth in points and goals.

Has 17 more points then the next highest Sabre.

If they get into a playoff spot he’s a hart candidate at this point. Draisaitl and mcdavid, Marchand and Pastrnak all with each other at the top and the only Guy is Mackinnon (who was kind of alone when Rantanen was gone) but he had a better team. Either way he probably wins (Mack does) and is the favourite but I’m just happy Eich is in the convo and should be for the next decade. Hes been playing like this for two years (pretty much) the only difference is the things that held him back before aren’t really anymore. His team still does fan on a lot of tap in set ups, I can only Imagine if this guy had a second line player who drove offense like a Tavares or a malkin. I couldn’t even imagine what his totals could be.

I was called “just biased” for years (I am biased but I wasn’t just doing it, because he was ‘just a great player’.... I knew he was elite) people who didn’t watch him thought it was all just talk. It’s not. That’s about it for me on the told you so it’s just still people aren’t talking about this but they will....

Still 1st in transition end to end rushes
Still 1st in offensive zone possession
5th in goals and points
3rd in zones entries

Curious, where do you get the bolded stats from?

Curious, where do you get the bolded stats from?

Hockey night in Canada Saturday night.

This was after the leaf game Eichel
Had 31:30 in the offensive zone, best in league after tonight im guessing that didn’t change.

Top in end to end rushes and entering the offensive zone where he was first and third the two numbers were something like one 188 and 68 not sure which was which I’m guessing the one closer to 68 would Ben the end to end to end rushes. (It’s been a couple of days but I think I still have the game on PVR maybe I’ll check)

The guy showing the graph was Kyle dacusus (last game is probably Spelled wrong)

Being first place in the NHL in taking the puck out of your zone into the offensive zone , as well as being first place in offensive zone possession, and a plus 7 is it? On a team that allows a lot of goals (like plus seven higher then Barkov) makes you better defensively then Matthews. Matthews has been a give away machine lately. It’s not even close this year, Matthews has has been constantly ripped for his defensive play up in here in Canada all year. As far as effort goes? That’s not not close either. The funny thing is some leaf fans have given Eichel A lazy reputation. It’s kind of hilarious. He’s now been in on 38 of Buffalos 85 goals (not going to do the math which doesent seem overlyhard but guessing that’s about 45 percent) and only plays 1/3rd of every games total time. (Like most other elite forwards)

GM Jack finally found a coach he likes!

Looks like he won't be getting Krueger fired.
