Jack Eichel is quietly becoming a top-5 player in the league

I said Eichel has to prove he's better than Mackinnon at this point because Mackinnon currently has a season (17-18) under his belt at a level that Eichel has yet to touch.

Reading is hard.
I agree with this. Eichel is on his way there, and I honestly believe he has just as high, or even higher potential than MacKinnon. But he has to prove it. Now I see him as a top five guy in the NHL. MacKinnon was arguably the best in the world that season, and has been top three since.

I kind of see it like this; McDavid, MacKinnon top two. Then I'd still put Marchand as three. He has a lot of tools in his toolbox and has been great for three straight seasons, even when Pasta and Bergeron were injured last year. After that you have a few guys knocking at the door, each having their own thing. Eichel for his all around play, Pastrnak and his goal scoring, Draisaitl due to his production (I still want to see him produce at that level without McDavid), Kane, Kucherov Crosby, Ovechkin are always at the top somewhere. There are a few others of course, but this list is heavily influenced by this season, since I feel Jack has taken a leap to another tier.

So I have to prove Eichel is better but you dont have to prove MacK is better?

Thats laughable and a waste of time to continue since you have two different standards.

This conversation gets delusional when people put McDavid and MacK together.

Eichel has to prove that he is better by playing better. Not you. You can't do a single thing to prove Eichel is better, because the hockey world ranks Mack as better.

McDavid and Drais were too tired? Okay but Eichel was out there as long and was playing a b2b.
He must be in better shape too.

I haven't watched the Oilers much at all this year. Tonight I watched McDavid very closely. He really didn't impress me much, though it is just one game.

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion, but I think Eichel has caught, if not surpassed McDavid for the following reasons. (Some of these points would apply to Mack as well)

  • There is currently only a 10 point difference between 9 and 97 right now with Jack having a game in hand.
  • McD plays with one of the games top 10 players locked on his wing. Jack does not have a top 50 in his lineup. The difference easily accounts for the differential.
  • Unless tonight was the exception Connor plays nearly the entire PP. Jack usually only plays the first half. This would account for a large part of the difference.
  • Jack is much stronger on the puck than Connor and nearly as fast.
The "incidental" clutching and grabbing in the neutral zone tonight kept Jack largely at bay, but once he combines his speed with his elite power he brings an element 97 just cannot match. Again, this won't be the popular opinion but it's the way I see it.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, but you're objectively wrong. Just because Eichel performed better in a single game, doesn't replace the fact that McDavid plays at a much higher level on average, over a longer period of time.

Draisaitl is one of the top players in the game because other teams have to pay attention to Connor McDavid. That is not arguable. It's the same way Jarri Kurri and Mark Messier were allowed to develop into the players they became because they played with Wayne Gretzky.

I'm writing this as a Sabres fan. I think Eichel is a fantastic talent, a franchise talent, but he isn't on the same level as McDavid. Connor McDavid would elevate Sam Reinhart more than Jack Eichel would elevate Leon Draisaitl.

McDavid is the best player in the world. This isnt a discussion

McDavid simply has skills and vision that few have. His ability to create at speed is uniquely his. Mack is a physical specimen that thinks score first on every shift. His nose for scoring opportunities and his ability to finish is world class. Jack is similarly talented to Mack but it is obvious to Sabres fans that he has bought in to Kruegers 200 foot plan for him. Its similar to the commitment Syd made to being an all around world class player. Jack may have a run at an Art Ross, but More likely his best chance for hardware will be a Hart if he can lead the team to sustained playoff success. All great players and doubt any of their teams would likely swap for the others. But they have different aspects to their games that each of their teams has built around. The Oil simply needs to add depth on the other lines and shore up the d with the young prospects they have accumulated. The Avs are well set with young d and solid depth through the roster on O. The Sabres need to add depth scoring and find a driver to pair with Skinner to create another threat. And goaltending could be better beyond Ulmark.

All good players.

The bold is very well said, if I could give you 100 likes I would.

That is the difference between Eichel and the top tier players. Well said Seagull.

Eichel has yet to do it for 82 games.

Did you watch the game? My guess is no. McDavid didn't create one scoring chance.

McDavid set Drai up for a chance that hit the post, and also had a clean shot from the slot, both in the 3rd, and that's just from the highlights.

Neither Eichel or McDavid were at their best in this game so no point for useless remarks like "Eichel outshines McDavid"...

For anyone saying Eichel is better.....please explain the above.

Close to 320 games each and McDavid is over 120 points ahead.

Extra marks if you try and convince me the Oilers have a better team.

I dont think anyone is actually saying Eichel is actually a better player than McDavid
