Probably zero instances where it was an elite 1C, who wants to be traded and a neck injury wanting an experimental surgery.... or at least not tried on an NHL player. Nothing remotely close to compare to this scenario.
Every surgery ever done had to be done for a first time. The "experimental" tag is completely overblown.

More important is the elite 1C and demanding a trade part if this unusual situation.
I don't think that is the more important part. Tons of players better than eichel have demanded trades, but doing so because the team refuses to let him get a specific treatment is fairly unique.

Chris pronger, Pavel Bure, Paul Coffey, Eric lindros, Alexei yashin, Dany heatley, that's just recent ones off the top of my head. Jeff Carter at the time and Ryan kesler are even debatable.

Shit I forgot about Patrick Roy, one of the most famous trade requests in the sport. Star players asking out is not something new.

Brady Tkachuk. Jack Eichel. This is why you don't draft players with curly hair. They're nothing but bad news.

Would the Sabres look on a 3 way offer from Edmonton/Anaheim like below for Eichel:

To Buffalo:
Holloway
Comtois
Koskinen
Anaheim's 1st 2022-Anaheim has the option for the pick to becomes 2023 1st pick if Eichel plays less than 25 games in 2022
Edmonton's 1st 2022-top 5 protected

To Edmonton:(2022-1st-top 5 protected, Koskinen, Holloway)
Gibson

To Anaheim:( out Comtois, 2022-ANA-1st with conditions, Gibson)
Eichel

I posted something similar to this(had mctavish instead of comtois, and had Anaheim taking koskinen as a place holder. I think I also had Anaheim’s 2022 2nd in there

Sabres got:
mctavish, Holloway, oilers 22 1st, ducks 22 2nd, ducks conditional 23 1st based on eichel health, and a cap dump from Edmonton(not sure who tho)

ducks got
Eichel, koskinen

oilers got
gibson

It is only overblown *if* insurance will still cover the contract after receiving it. You are neglecting the issue of there quite possibly being 34 million actual dollars of insurance money involved.

I would rather trade Gibson for Holloway + Koskinen + 1st then Gibson + 1st + Comtois for Eichel.

Eichel would be great but I really don't think it is a gamble the Ducks can take.
If they make this move and Eichel never returns to form then the Ducks will set their rebuild back years.

The Ducks are rebuilding the right way and should keep it going.
