I think of a Jack Edwards broadcast as a private conversation among Bruins and Boston fans. You’re sorry you interrupted and you know whatever is said isn’t for your ears and happy to be on your way.

Yeah, we wouldn't want anybody to compare hockey to an actual war.

My quip was not referencing the war itself, it was aimed at Edwards for making the comparison with Montreal, which is in Quebec. The French Canadiens at the time probably had a lot less love for King George than the Americans did.

A hell of a lot more relevant than the Germans had to do with a hockey game, that's for sure. Anyway, I'm one who thinks that Edward's Revolutionary War rant was absurd, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy.

I’m too young for the great habs/bruins rivalries of the 70s, but Edwards sure brought out my hate for your team, its not the same without those types of guys, having players/personnel you truly hate always made for better games.

next to the bench
He was a homer, but every sport needs them. I hope they find some answers for him soon. Great to see him in good spirits in the meantime.
He was a homer BUT always studied up on the opposing team and knew his history. He would often praise players on the other team which would sometimes piss off Bs fans.

To me he was over the top at times but was fun to listen to. He loved his job, and it showed. The new guy is fine but very vanilla. You could never say that about Jack.

As a long time Bs fan I wish him the best and know not being able to call the games is killing him. I hope he visits he Garden often. It was nice to see him at the game (yes I was there).

That is precisely why I appreciate the likes of Edwards and Marchand -- people who are good at their job and also get under the skin. You mention the 70s. That was my favorite decade of the NHL partially because there were so many villains that helped stoke the hate between rivals.

A good amount of soul has been leaving the NHL as cookie cutter announcers dominate the booth, expansion has led to rivals not playing each other as much, and bro culture among the players has replaced much of the hate.

It always saddens me a little bit when an announcer, coach, or player who served as a lightning rod retires, because I know nowadays they will likely be replaced by someone whose public image is based around promoting their "brand" and who will not be as entertaining.

Edwards spouting nonsense comparing a hockey performance with the American Revolution was far more entertaining than the soul-less drivel of announcers bantering about their golf scores at the latest charity golf tournament or what the current betting odds heading into the 3rd period are.
