Generally agree but those weak goals were backbreaking, especially last nights gaping five hole. It was so reminiscent of Andersen, it’s scary

This. If anyone was unhappy with Freddy, then you should be just as unhappy with Jack. It was a near identical series performance - go check Freddy's stats from last year's series if you doubt that. And I agree, that goal was absolutely back breaking in a 0-0 Game 7, midway through, going up against a robot in Carey Price.

The reality is that neither goalie has been among the top 3 players responsible for their teams series underperformance, imo. The team in front have continually disappeared and have coughed up the puck at the worst times - and before you say turnovers happen, our opponents have NOT been coughing up the puck in such brutal positions or at such brutal times (not really an issue in Game 7, albeit).

you know the Gallagher goal wasnt great but it wasnt like it was an awful goal. He got beat five hole from a pretty dangerous shooting position it happens...wasn't like the shot was a muffin. Some of the g7 goals Andy gave up were far worse.

How the hell does anyone blame Jack Campbell for the series loss when Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner have 1 goal between them?

I feel like if Toronto swept Montreal with Campbell posting a shutout in each game, this board would be like "yeah but they hit 4 posts. Jack should have been in better position".

That goal he let Gallagher score was unacceptable. Had a great regular season but another playoff choker just like Andersen

The guy posted a 1.81 GAA and .938 SV% in a 7 game series, he deserves none of this blame.

If you can't win a series where your goalie is giving up less than 2 goals a game on average when you have two 11M forwards you have other issues

Dude was legitimately broken up in his post game presser...you can see he cares...as far as I’m concerned he can stay as he’s shown more emotion in half a year than the core in 3 years

Not to mention the .938 save percentage. I think he's safe, maybe a 1a 1b situation with someone coming in to push him a beat, but i believe he has earned the starting position come next season.

He gave the boys everything a good team needed to win, apparently we are not a good team.

You got 22 million tied up in 1 goal over 7 games, thats the issue, not the goalie.

You know it's possible to blame more than 2 people, at varying levels, right?

The false equivalence is brutal. There aren't many people defending the dynamic fail duo, but Campbell did in fact give up very soft goals, during the whole series long, and the first goal of one of the most crucial games in franchise history. Blaming Campbell and the two stiffs aren't mutually exclusive.

A wrist shot from just inside the blueline that is not screened nor deflected can NEVER go through the five-hole, let alone go in period. It was a brutal goal at the worst time. That is just the reality of it, which doesn't speak to his performance rest of game which was strong.

Yeah, and Jack should be getting none of it.

You wanna complain take it out on 22 million for 1 goal, take it out on Keefes inability to change up his big line which CLEARLY wasn't working against Montreal, take it out on Thornton still being on the ice for game 7 when he is clearly done better yet ON THE POWERPLAY IN GAME 7, take it out on that GOD awful powerplay or Simmonds complete disappearance, like where did he go? He was hitting and physical and then just disappeared a few games ago.

I'm just listing some things that contributed to the loss more than Campbell, he's the only reason we were in this series, and he got zero goal support.

The Simmonds one is a stretch but lol honestly where did he go? And why did the hockey become so tame and lame as the series went on? The feistness, anger and passion was just gone, most boring game 7 I've ever seen. No heart, no passion, blame it on that, not my boy Jack.

Nah, I think I'll complain about who I want. Plenty of blame to go around, and Jack deserves some of it (as long as it's not personal attacks or harassment), don't give a shit how nice a guy he is.

I don't give a shit about how nice of a guy someone is either, but I'm also smart enough to give a shit about a .934 save percentage.

That goal wasn't the game winner so it didn't cost them, if Marner doesn't turn that puck over, that goal wouldn't have happened, team couldn't score so didn't matter anyways
Yes it did. Nylander's goal doesn't count when you're already down 3-0 with 2 minutes to go. That weak goal put more pressure on the Leafs and it cost them the game, you can't spin it into a positive because they didnt lose 1-0. I'm not even criticizing Campbell's overall play because he did play well, but the fact is, he let in a soft goal 5 hole in a game 7 and it wasn't as if he was screened either. That goal set the tone for the rest of the night, you can't give up cheap ones when your up against one of, if not, the best goalie in the league

This fanbase is so unrealistic with their expectations for goalies.

Campbell was good in the playoffs, and so was Freddy the last few years. Neither of them was ever the problem.
I'm sick of hearing this excuse. Every other teams goalie out performs ours, at what point are we going to hold our goalies to higher standards? I've defended Anderson enough here, but you know what? You can't win games when you concede the first goal, and its a weak one because it sets the tone, it really does. You give off the impression that your team cannot trust you when they need you. Since the Leafs made the playoff against the Capitals, Holtby, Rask twice, Merzlikins, Korpisalo and now Price all stood on their heads and defeated the Leafs. At what point, can we expect our goalies to play above and beyond? Because it seems like everyone else gets these types of performances, while we don't. We have to settle for "well, you can't save them all , better luck next year!". Why can these teams get away with this and we cant? Our goalies simply aren't good enough to steal games , and thats how you get far in the playoffs.

Also affects the mindset of being able to play with an offensive mindset (which was a partial reason for this epic failure in general) because you have it in the back of your mind that no matter how much you limit high danger chances, there's a decent chance your goalie will let in a muffin through the legs from the top of the circle .

It wasnt just inside the blueline. Its definitely considered a Grade A scoring chance. Its not like it was a brutal goal but yes he could have had it and Price made plenty of huge saves that were tougher.

Despite of him giving up a bad goal, I was more comfortable him than I ever was with Andersen
Hard to blame the goalie when you are not scoring back to back years in elimination game

Hard to blame the goalie when your PP sucks or you are constantly giving up the puck

It wasn't from the slot and it certainly wasn't a high danger chance (which would be grade A); it was top of circle. Campbell reacted way late and looked like he was focused on controlling a rebound by swallowing it up. It wasn't even flat along the ice, which would've been sneaky; it was a miserable goal and killed the start of the 2nd period.

There is nothing else he could have done for us to win game 6 or 7
He could have stopped sieving soft goals. But you're right, not much else he could do to win us games. The big boys did it to themselves

He is a great goalie but he just doesn't have what it takes emotionally. I wonder if this was a a great year for him because he was playing in front of empty stadiums. Even then he got rattled at times. I can not imagine what his mind set would be in a playoff series in Boston getting absolutely ripped by 18000 people when he lets in a softie like last night. Nice guy, great goalie but will never win a Stanley Cup a a starter.

Sure, Jack let in the bad goal in game 7… but he had no help from the team. They failed to score on Price.

Did we expect Jack to go end to end dancing through all 5 Montreal players, then go top shelf on Price…. Yeah right.

Marner and Matthews need to own this.

I'm smart enough to have eyes to witness terrible, soft, deflating goals.

How about being smart enough to using some context then? Price let in a slew of soft deflating goals as well. Yet Montreal played on with heart and intensity regardless. Price doesnt get any flack because they were the huge underdogs and his team preformed in front of him when it counted and they won.

If people want to say Campbell let in a soft goal they can because he did. When people start going overboard saying he is a reason they lost the game or the series or even that Price was some elite force, those people need to be corrected because this situation is nothing like our situations of the past 18 years.

The difference now is that the caliber of our team and defence was at a level our goaltending shouldnt be expected to have to carry it over a team 20 points behind, barely a playoff entry and dominated by us all season. Yet, here we are again.

Semi-stinker to open game 7 but not awful. Overall, very pleased with Jack. Big improvement on Andersen IMO. Starting caliber goalie no question in my mind. My biggest annoyance with him is at panic time when the puck is near his crease. His erratic swimming is not very good, I don't even mind if he wants to swim in certain situations but you have to at least protect along the ice and make them lift the puck, watch Hasek, he was crazy but he never made it easy on you like Jack does. Room for improvement.

It was the same script under Freddy.

It wasn't Freddy's fault or Campbells fault.

Obviously the team is quite literally "rotten to the core".

Marner and Matthews are the core of the failures for the past 5 years. Dubas and Keefe deserve blame for pandering to them.
