Ah yes the Jack Campbell thread has turned into a longing for Mike Babcock thread. This f***ing fanbase I swear....

Babcock was handed Sparks & Hutch as backups. He didn’t have a chance

Babs was handed McElhinney as backup, you mean.

Babcock Goaltending (starting in 16-17):

Andersen: 209gms (72gs%), .918sv%
McElhinney: 32gms (11gs%), .925sv%
Sparks: 20gms (7gs%), .902sv%
Hutchinson: 11gms (4gs%), .896s%
Other: 10gms (4gs%), .882sv%

Keefe Goaltending:

Andersen: 59gms (49gs%), .903sv%
Campbell: 42gms (35gs%), .928sv%
Hutchinson: 19gms (16gs%), .901sv%
Other: 7gms (6gs%), .879sv%

LOL look at the defenseman Babcock had compared to Keefe.
While yes, Dubas has done an amazing job improving the defense, that does not explain the entire discrepancy. They also had the same defensemen in 19-20 and it was an immediate and significant improvement.
Also not to mention if Andersen didn’t play it was literally a loss.
Aside from not being true, the referenced stats also had nothing to do with goaltending.
Also let’s not forget these kids completely did not want to play defense when Babcock was there.
That's also just flat-out not true.

1. Yes Dubas has done a good job improving the defense which is why Campbell looks as good as he does.

Keefe did instantly better defensively with the exact same roster as Babcock.

2. we both know that is bullshit, if your defense is bad your goaltender is more likely to let in more goals

Those stats have nothing to do with goaltending.

3. yes they completely tuned Babcock out. They played with zero compete and effort in the last season he was there. And even prior to that it is well documented they had zero interest in playing defense, it was part of the reason why they hated Babcock. He wanted them to play structured boring hockey and try to win, they wanted to play fast and exciting hockey

They have been far, far, far better defensively under Keefe than they were under Babcock. They aren't playing run and gun whatsoever - they are playing excellent defense.

They were an utter mess defensively under Babcock every year, amongst the very worst in hockey every single year.

haha was just a light little jab bc he argued with me that waiving Brooks was a mistake and that he’d easily be MTL’s third line Center. You’ll never catch Zeke owning up to when he’s wrong tho, so it’s all good.

wait are you claiming that I was the one that was wrong about Brooks ? really?

Well what are they supposed to bitch about with the team 9-1 in the last ten?

I swear that there's an element of this board that would see a 2021 cup win as legitimately bittersweet- not being able to enjoy it fully because of who was at the helm.

I mean he should have been kept over Amadio so you weren’t wrong about that. But you did say he was easily Montreal’s 3rd best Center or third line Center. Which was wrong.

anyways it’s a Campbell thread. Like I said earlier, less structure but it doesn’t matter if Campbell is playing solid and whatever free reign keefe has given them works. As long as they play good in front of him that’s all that matters at the end of the day. I said that in my very first post.

If we won last year we wouldn’t be hearing the end of how we only faced Canadian teams and it was a shortened year etc. I’d rather win it in a real year when players are competing and care to their fullest, something not apparent last season IMO.

It would be so Leafs for Campbell to win the Vezina and us not be able to afford him. Just. So friggin Leafs.

Sign him already Dubas, you're just burying yourself the longer this goes along.

Hey, we're vast. We contain multitudes.

The sheer size of the Leaf fanbase, together with its engagement, ensures that no matter how crazy a particular position is there will always be a sizeable group that supports it. Given the universal rule that the more extreme the view the louder it tends to be, the fact that we manage to have as much constructive discussion on these forums as we do is a minor miracle.

Said the opposite actually...and was right!

But you did say he was easily Montreal’s 3rd best Center or third line Center. Which was wrong.

What I actually said was that he'd immediately get a shot at the 3C spot....and he did! No surprise he couldn't hack it tho as he's not very good. Thing is- the Habs still don't have a 3C (or a 4C tbh) but they're going to try to go with their in house guys Evans and Poehling there for now, even though it isn't working.

Jack has been great. But also clearly benefitting from the Leafs strong structure.

This is clear from the eye test, as we can all see Jack isn't being forced to make too many ten-beller saves, and is also backed up by all the numbers.

That's what we do here every day - talk about the team. So yes, of course it's OK. But if some people get carried away after some early season wins and start bragging about how elite a team we have, it's also OK to remind people that regular season success often doesn't lead to playoff success and isn't really worth bragging about.

A little bit of humility never hurt anyone. JMHO.

That's just it. I keep hearing about how elite this team is, what a great job Dubas has done, how this stat and this other stats say we're one of the best out there......every year. They lose in the playoffs usually in embarrassing fashion, and then we're told how we were the better team, barely lost, elite stars, being impatient blah blah blah
I can admit and eat crow when I'm wrong while others just dig in deeper and go back to the same cycle above.

Anyway, Jack has been great, I'm sure his agent wants to hold out while he's on this hot streak. It's a gamble for both sides. Can he stay healthy is the biggest question

He's controlled when in the net, he is in position not a flopper and doesn't give many rebounds. That is why his saves look routine. Ten beller's are for guys that always seem to be scrambling. Now when Campbell is out of the net and handling the puck it is hold your breath time.

Babcock had no system, no ideas, no flexibility, and no people skills. It was obvious.

I really have no clue why he was ever hired.
