Bob's draft lottery edition.

"The race for No. 1 in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft has tightened up considerably.

In honour of today’s NHL Draft Lottery, we conducted a flash poll of eight NHL team head scouts to get a TSN Top 5 Ranking, Draft Lottery Edition.

And where Kingston Frontenac centre Shane Wright got nine of 10 No. 1 votes from the scouts in our mid-season rankings in January, he got six of nine votes to remain atop the quickie poll.

Wright would appear to be staring down two legitimate threats for first overall.

Big Slovak winger Juraj Slafkovsky received two No. 1 votes today and USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-18 team centre Logan Cooley got one.

Slafkovsky was No. 5 at mid-season but vaulted up to No. 2 on this lottery day ranking. Cooley, who was No. 2 at mid-season, is No. 3 today, but very little separates the American and Slovak forwards.

The big mover, though, is heady Slovak defenseman Simon Nemec, who was No. 9 at mid-season. He moved up to No. 4 on the strength of four of our nine scouts ranking him in their top three overall, one of them at No. 2.

Finnish winger Joakim Kemell, No. 3 on the mid-season rankings, checks in at No. 5 today.

Winnipeg Ice forward Matt Savoie, who was No. 4 on the mid-season rankings, did get a pair of top-five votes in the lottery edition poll but not enough to get by Nemec or Kemell. Czechia defender David Jiricek, No. 7 at mid-season, picked up three Top 5 votes this time. Jiricek was the closest to challenging Kemell for the No. 5 spot."

I was praying to see MTL's card get flipped for the 1. I don't want the pressure of passing on Shane Wright for players I'd rather take. Jiricek would be my choice, but it's not an easy one. Adding another top level defensive prospect is too tantalizing.

Jiricek or Slafkovsky is about as big of a win/win as it can possibly get for the Devils. This is a great day.

This is huge -- unfathomably huge good news. Let's start the debate -- Slafkovsky or Jiricek?
I have Jiricek #1 and Slafkvosky #2 on my overall board but I don't think you can really go wrong with either. With the World championships coming up and all three of Jiricek, Slafkovsky and Nemec representing their countries we'll be able to get a great look at all three. If I had to put my money on who'll likely be the pick I'd bet on Slafkovsky but we obviously still have a lot of time from now till the draft.

I think it's 50/50 -- both Jiricek and Slafkovsky are precisely what the Devils need and precisely the type of player who our GM expressly stated he was seeking.

I think you typically see defensemen picked above their station at the top end of drafts, and I think this is a pretty good chance to grab one of two pretty high profile guys in the draft. I think you can't look at Makar and Fox and not hope we can get a piece of something like that to slot in alongside Hughes.

2nd slot gives us the pick of the top 5-10 litter and choose who we want since they're all pretty close to each other. Passing on Slafkovsky isn't something I'd do happily but if Jiricek and Slaf both hit... top end RD of his size are... a rare commodity. I wouldn't lose any sleep over having Slaf instead though. Hopefully one of those guys are the pick.

Yep, in my new mock draft I have the Devils agreeing with the latest McKenzie scout poll and taking Juraj Slafkovsky at #2 overall. This would be a phenomenal pick, and Slaf would enter the Devils prospect pool neck and neck with Luke Hughes for the #1 overall slot.

I wanted to invite some of my fellow Devils draft posters to use this thread to list their top 10 or top 5 for the 2022 draft. We all know how I feel about the prospects, because I think I (over)explain things pretty thoroughly, but I'd like to learn what the general consensus is among the really sharp fans who usually contribute to the Devils draft threads.

My top 4
1. Shane Wright
2. Juraj Slafkovsky
3. Simon Nemec
4. Logan Cooley

Having a hard time deciding on 5 so I gave up. Not huge on Jiricek but I can see the potential with his combination of size, quick feet, and heavy shot.

I wanted to take some time to talk about a Slovakian who is not named Slafkovsky or Nemec.

I felt Adam Sykora was simply outstanding today. His compete level is as high as anyone in the 2022 draft, and he plays with such frenetic energy it seems like he is everywhere at once every shift. The young left winger is skilled and fast and I've gone on the record more than once saying he has top 6 upside, and he just missed the 2023 draft by a matter of days.

This is a player who is worth a pick as early as the 25-30 range for me. I currently have him ranked #35, but for me it's very tight between #30-#40. So, if you're looking for a earthshaking sleeper, here are his consensus rankings:

48 Smaht Scouting
54 Scouching
73 Draft Prospects Hockey
100 FC Hockey
UNRANKED Everyone Else

I think this is a kid who may be available in the 3rd or even 4th round, folks. And Adam Sykora is for real. He's a high floor kid who will, at the very least, be one of the better bottom 6 energy guys in the league. As for his upside? Well he scored more goals in the Slovakian men's league than any other teenager as a 17 year old when the season ended. He'll turn 18 on September 7th.

This is a major potential steal.

Tatar said he was taking Sykora under his wing. Then Slafkovsky.

OK, like @Tao Jersey Jones I just finished watching the Seattle vs. Portland WHL playoff game. And I wanted to talk a bit about a Seattle's Tom Wilson-esque LW Reid Schaefer.

Seattle was in an elimination game, down 3-2 in the best of 7 series. Schaefer got the T-Birds on the board early with an absolute laser beam from between the dots. His 30-goal season was no fluke -- this guy is a near-elite shooter who is as good at scoring off net-scrums as any draft-eligible in the WHL. Schaefer then played a tremendous two way game, had a few more offensive chances and about 6 or 7 hits. The 6'3-215 Schaefer is possibly the most physical forward available in the entire 2022 draft.

With one minute to go in a one-goal elimination game on a veteran team, Schaefer was out on the ice to protect the lead.

The backlash against big/physical players by many draft analysts is the only reason I can think that Reid Schaefer's consensus ranking is probably around the 100-120 range. I have him at #31 overall, and I'm comfortable with him in the early 30s. But I guarantee, some of these "new age" analysts who think that "big & physical" means "dumb and unskilled" will have him ranked 50 spots behind some 5'8 forward who scores less than he does and doesn't bother with defense or puck battles.

Don't be fooled by the lemmings. Reid Schaefer is a heck of a hockey prospect and has sleeper and steal written all over him.
