I really hope it leads to something but I'm not holding my breath

Gerbe at least picked up an assist if the rumblings are true. Granted, he single-handedly killed one Sabre PP too...

"If I thought hitting won games, I'd tell the guys to hit more."
Seriously though, how much do the sabres have to watch other teams actually hit people when they go to the net and use the boards to take guys out when they drive wide before they realize the "wave your stick at the puck" strategy doesn't work?

It isn't about hitting. It's about playing the body, pinning a guy out of the play, knocking down a check around the crease. Granted, when Regehr did just that, they called it a penalty.

Wow, so I was looking at the board and saw the moved GBU, with "Guess What" as the thread title. Felt endeared. :P

But I just don't get it.... The Sabres HAVE the tools.. but...the use of them is like trying to put a square block into the triangle hole.

Bad : Pominville not even willing to take responsibility for that awful turn over on their 3rd goal in the post-game interview. Not very captain like.

U: Lindy's "puck possession" system. The Sabres are one of the worst teams in the league at possessing the puck and they are endlessly retreating into their own zone, where they usually give the puck away.

Worst part is the guy was trying to skate on one skate through a keyhole, when he was knocked down. Pommers got a hold for pushing a guy, yet there were about 10 times you could have called a Penguin for worse than either of those 2 calls. REAL bad, biased officiating.

If you think we get screwed though, try watching a Ducks game. No idea how they keep winning playing against the opponent and the league.

Even the 5 on 3 was terrible, they just got a great deflection from Vanek. There's just ZERO movement from anyone. They setup in the zone and just pass it around without a single person ever moving more than a couple feet. It's insanely easy to defend against.

Yeah, our power play is horrendous. Personally, I think Ehrhoff has to be out there for the whole two minutes. There is no flow when he isn't out there and our other defensemen suck on the point. Hell, they were busy teeing up Pominville instead of Ehrhoff on the 5 on 3 for some unknown reason. I understand you want Vanek in front of the net but the first few games of the season everyone was moving around, including Vanek and that's why we were having success.

I also hate Ennis on the power play. He likes to out-skate people and carry, then create. No opportunities to do that on the PP. He constantly drifts into poor areas in my opinion as well. There's a reason the team has been better statistically the last few seasons when Ennis isn't on the power play. Then again, at least he didn't single-handedly kill a power play like Gerbe did. We're really lacking in quality power play guys right now.

G: Kaleta, Mc Cormick, Ott; Lazy ass Vanek hasn't completely forgotten how to score.

B: Pominville; Sulzer's confidence might have suffered from the benching.

U: I find myself more and more indifferent while watching games.
At least it gives me a reason to prepare some Nachos.

This team stinks. What to blame it on? Too many youngsters? Not enough talent? Bad coaching? Bad system? Bad defense? Take your pick.

What I do see is a whole combination of bad, and watching a team like the Pens, helps see the difference. First, their team is big and you don't push them off the puck. And I mean Neal, Kunitz...their forwards. Second, they finish the play. They hustle. They clear the front of the net. They play with speed. The defense jumps into the play when they should. They keep getting the puck into their stars hands. They are consistent. They play like winners.

I can not say any of the above about the Sabres. I said it for years with the Bills, we sucked in the 70-80's and after Kelly and crew because of one reason....a contender is built from the top-down. Bills hired Bill Polian and it trickled down to the coaches and players. Polian left a great team, went to Carolina and they went to far in their second season, then went to Indy and built them into champs. Regier and Ruff are not winners.....like them but the team plays like wannabes just like GM/coach.

Need to change

This is my biggest gripe with the team. I wish they'd go for simple zone exits or little clears/dumps and then make a strong effort to retrieve the puck or at the very least, get setup again. Instead they make slow decisions, are hesitant, and continually back peddle...all in the name of continually holding on to the puck.

U- The majority of the team seams deathly afraid of contact... drives me nuts seeing them swinging their sticks in the defensive zone, peeling away instead of finishing their checks.
- Ennis and his half a$$ coasting towards an opponent because he's afraid of getting hit is really starting to irk me. He gets tight shorts whenever someone is trying to line him up and could care less about taking the hit to make the play.
-Poms sucked tonight. He's front and center when it comes to our puss-ified team.

I thought Regehr played his best game of the season and Ott did what we brought him in to do.

Gerbe on the power play
That was Pominville's worst game that I can remember from him in a long time. I would say it was his worst since he became captain. Absolutely horrendous.
Another wasted Miller performance
Ehrhoff not being on the first power play unit outside of the 5 on 3. At this point, I'd be playing him the full 2 minutes out there, he's been great back there and the other point men have been average at best.

Really? I've seen four games in person with Regehr in the lineup. He's slow. You don't catch it all on TV, how much his slow play affects other players compensating. He can still hit, he's tough and he's smart. But his speed has dropped some much it's shocking. I think other players are forced into situations because he might not get to puck or other player. He's useful on the penalty kill. I'll give that. Of course, he's not the only problem. Leopold has been way worse but Regehr is not going to improve, he's done.

Went to the game, had a great time. I would say Kaleta was the best forward on the ice today, he's so good on the PK and always seemed to be right in the perfect spot to block shots. Wasn't at all impressed with Myers once again...he has no business running a power play, all forward momentum seemed to grind to a halt when he'd be tasked with carrying the puck out of the Sabres end and we lost about 20-25 seconds of a man advantage because he couldn't shake a forechecker to save his life. Agree with the other posters advocating "all Ehrhoff all the time" on the PP until Sekera is back, he's the only one competent back there. Leopold wasn't any better than Myers.

Miller's save was incredible...one of the best of the year leaguewide. Loved Ott's goal and his willingness to mix it up at the end, his example is the one the younger players need to be following. Kris Letang's pass on the second Dupuis goal was amazing.

The building seemed to be half full of Pens fans, I've never been to a game where the crowd was so split like that before (obviously this means I've never been to a Toronto or Montreal game in that building).

Didn't win the 50/50...that sucked. Was already halfway to Vegas in my mind.

I don't see how any of that changes that it was his best game of the season. Clearly he's losing a step and is a shell of his former self, but I thought he played well today.

Lot of Bruins fans Friday too. Holiday weekend in Ontario which is good for business and the Sabres -- at least financially.

Relative to who? Leopold? It was one of Gerbe's best games too and he has yet to score a goal. I'm sick of excuses. Blow the team up. Fire Ruff. Trade Leopold, Regehr for whatever you can get. Let's get the young guys like McNabb up and see if he can play. This season is just about over. Let's use it to learn and get a high pick.
