By a good Russian tradition after a great tense win Russia will lose to a weaker opponent playing a bad game being on an emotional crash

Some years are different, but it's nice seeing the development of some of the U.S. players. This team would get beat by more than just team Canada on many years but now a roster full of non NTDP players (besides 2) can not just compete but beat the other good nations. A side note that really hasn't been pointed out is I think it shows how good the USHL is becoming. Our Hlinka team is usually made up of USHL kids that would get smashed by the top Canadian major junior players. But I think it shows that the USHL is right up there now.

I went to the USA vs Canada game in Plymouth on Saturday and I got to speak after the game briefly with Erik Foley (a Jets prospect) who played in the USHL now at Providence College. I asked him that question about the USHL and he said it's very comparable now to the CHL. Not much of gap like there used to be.

I was referring to their play in the final minutes of the game.

It's hard to know whether 98 or 99 is worse. The forward group last year was a bit deeper, I think.

Will McLeod be making an appearance at the tournament, I wonder. He was MIA at U17 as well.

In any event, barring a miracle, Canada is looking at going 0-3 medals-wise at its junior level tournaments so far this year. Perhaps U17 world challenge will go better.

when you are on top, everyone else is chasing. The countries that are closest are playing more youth hockey at a national level.
How did the Russians get on the board? special teams.
Sound familiar? another new coach this year you say?
It is a very simple game that wins.
We are going to win our share, but will fall behind in these tournaments more so because our CHL junior driven system does not allow our best to pool and practice.
Other countries have figured it out.

We actually played well, couple chances for the Czechs and 2 goals..

2-2 goal by Zadina was very nice. Czechs leading 3-2 now.

Canada will win its fair share, never going anywhere and will always be perhaps the team to beat at a national level at any age group.

oh well. decent fight atleast. too many pointless and mysterious penalties.

if i've counted right teräväinen has been on ice on 5/9 goals to own net. really needs some strength

Czechs have an impressive team. Finns played ok, took too many penalties though. That last penalty was odd.

We still can't score when we need it. But we have underperformed in Hlinka almost every year so this isn't that new. Congrasts anyway.

That second half of the second period :amazed: We dominated them. Smart moves, passes, counter attacks....some of our players even looked faster than finns...:amazed: Its a long long time I was in such a positive mood after watching our juniors....well deserved.

Good game by Finnland as well

Grassroots Hockey is more or the less the same in all parts of the World now in the methods of skill development.

Players are trained so similarily. Just type it up on youtube and you can see how everyone trains from the early ages.

A weak birth year is not a signal that Canadian Hockey is in danger lol.

You're kidding right!?
You think 7 ,8 and 9 year olds in Finland and Sweden are playing upwards of 60 full ice games and then another full season of structured Spring and summer hockey!!?. ..haha. It's a ****ing joke to watch what goes on in this country at the youngest ages. And don't blame it on Hockey Canada!! They aren't the ones pushing this insanity.

its simple..canadas development system is based on making a call on a kids future at 16 max 18 yrs of age and acid test and throws them aside as of average 17yrs old...

usa system promotes and has multiple options for kids to continue to well into college ( 21/22/23)

The team played fairly well, but just like John McFarland's Kingston Frontenacs, this team can't score. This '99 group won the U17s and in that tournament, Canada split their team into 3 teams and one of the teams ended up winning the whole tournament. This group is good and we were going to lose this tournament eventually. Just create another streak next year. They dominated the Russians, it's not like we were lucky to score 1 goal, the Russian goalie stood on his head and then they scored 2 quick goals. It sucks, but we played better than the Russians and it's too bad. This group of Canadians are good, they'll be dominating the 2017 NHL Draft and they'll do well at the U20s.

In 2015, Canada won everything there was to win in hockey except the U18s. I wouldn't be crying for a whole change in Canada's grassroots level just yet.

We can definitely improve a lot though.

Who cares who wins and loses at this age. But, imo, these tourneys are fantastic to see how players compare to each other.

Junior hockey at it's best/worst. 3-1 Canada after the 1st.
1-0 after a very qustionable non spearing call. 1-1 Brännström on the PP. 2-1 shorthanded breakaway for Comtois, 3-1 identical shorthanded (3 on 5) breakaway for Comtois.

Not that this game matter much for Sweden but they shouldn't be giving it away like this..

If Canada wins today and Slovakia loses to Russia, does Canada stay in?

I think Russia has to lose for Canada to advance. Standings now have Sweden with 6 points, Russia 3, Canada 2 and Slovakia 1.
If Canada and Slovakia win they'll have 5 and 4 points. Russia will have 3. So Sweden and Canada get in.

Or I could be wrong:laugh:

Though HC website says this
Needing a win to clinch a semifinal spot, Canada closes out the preliminary round at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup against Sweden.

But HC has been wrong in the past, so who knows:sarcasm:

It seems they're wrong here.

If Canada hangs for the win they'll have five points, but if Russia beats Slovakia in regulation they'll have six. A Russian win in OT gives them five but they would have the head-to-head tie-breaker.

So the Slovaks needs to pull it out somehow vs Russia, despite already being eliminated. Not something I'd bet money on.

Actually it wasn't a spear, it was kneeing. Should have been at least an interference call since it was away from the play. Brännström was down in front of his net for ~30 seconds, Canada scored.

Alright so they gooned it up like he ol cnadian bois eh :D
