Good on the Jays to get Gausman if Ray and his agents were indeed playing hardball. Ray knows what Toronto is about, what they were in process of becoming, and he made a mistake not coming back.

If the rumour is true he should be immediately firing his agent. Talk about mismanagement

Wow...Ray...got a lot less than i thought he would. I think he indeed tried to play hardball - and pete walker likely told them to move on.

Pretty crazy to see him sign the same contract though. Agent's head should roll for sure.

I highly doubt they asked Walker's opinion at that stage and decided to bail on Ray based on his advice. What seems more likely is that the Jays knew they had to have a top shelf pitcher coming out of this winter given their intent to compete and the state of the rotation (Matz gone, Ray possibly gone, Ryu struggling last year, questions about when the next wave will be ready). So they made what they deemed to be a competitive offer to Ray and Gausman's camps and when Ray decided to see if he could squeeze some extra dollars out of the Jays they shifted focus to Gausman, who was an easier sign. That way they don't have to overcommit on the contract, ensure they end up with one of the guys they want (because as has been said, the pair of them are functionally very similar pitchers), and aren't left waiting on Ray to come off his high ask with the constant threat of some dumb, Mets-or-Rangers-like team just throwing stupidly large sacks of cash at him and leaving the Jays empty handed and scrounging for B and C tier replacements.

Now, Atkins and company move down their list of possibilities, which includes Javier Baez in a super utility role. The sides have held some talks and while that doesn’t mean anything is imminent, they’ll remain engaged with all their potential targets in pursuit of an eventual fit.

Javy may be an option for us after all. Connection to Berrios makes sense.

Yeah, fair enough. Just meant Walker likely endorsed either pitcher, and when one said yes and the other wavered, made it that much easier.

Or my respect for walker is overblown, but i think he's amazing.

As you said they're functionally the same wipeout pitch guys anyway.

Javier Báez - Wikipedia
Báez announced his engagement to longtime girlfriend Irmarie Márquez via Twitter on April 11, 2018.[80] Their son, Adrián Javier Báez Márquez, was born on June 28, 2018.[81][82]The couple was married in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 26, 2019.[83]

Báez' wife, Irmarie, is the sister of Jannieliz Márquez, who is married to Toronto Blue Jays pitcher José Berríos.[84]

Semien at 28: 17.4 fWAR or 21.2 bWAR in 806 games

Baez at 28: 17.5 fWAR or 23.4 bWAR in 862 games

Both are 6”0’ 195. Baez’s birthday is on December 1st. Perfect birthday gift is to sign a contract before then.

Isn't Baez known for being a bit of a dbag? Can't remember where I heard that. Edit- Ah yes, it was the thumbs down incident.

I honestly think they're still at least a #1 AND #2 starter away from maybe being a fringe competitor, even after spending half a billion this week.

I agree. Not saying they are good signings but the AL West is getting a little weaker with Houston expected to lose Correra and Greinke and Oakland expecting to sell soon. I guess it’s worth a shot.

Heard if the Dodgers don’t want Kershaw back then he is going to Texas to play for the Rangers or to retire. That’s one ok arm. Just need another they may add at the deadline. Or get an expiring.

I wouldn't give Baez a long term deal either, but if the money dries up and he's taking a deal of 3 years or less, he may be the best we can do to replace Semien.

Baez on a shorter term deal + a trade for Castilio or Marquez would be a nice alternative to trading for J-Ram

Con: Baez can't hit water if he fell out of a boat

Pro: Elite defense at a premium position, good speed, turns himself into a twizzler every time he attempts to hit the ball, which will never be not funny.

I don't think i'd hate it if it's on a shorter team deal as a couple here have already said. Long term though and that deal probably ages horrendously.
