Im not shocked to see both them go. Also not shocked to see Sully stay and be involved in the hiring process. Sully and Hex were not on the same page at all. Hopefully whoever is brought in is and they bring in players Sully will utilize properly.

I think we all know this won't happen

That's the most frustrating thing here. Fans always complain about Hextall or JR not giving Sullivan good bottom-6 pieces, yet the bottom-6 pieces Sullivan gets always underperform what they do elsewhere. Sullivan has been consistently unable to get good bottom-6 production even when having good options for bottom-6 players.

Burke statement: “Grateful for opportunity to have worked in this passionate sports town. Thank you to FSG, Mario Lemieux, David Morehouse, management & coaches, & especially to our great group of players. Best of luck to the Penguins & their incredible fan base in the future.”

I don’t even really know if I’m that mad at Burke. Seems like a good dude who was just the PR mouthpiece for Hextall. Probably shouldn’t get a job in professional hockey again though.

how many non-skilled guys do we need?

Sully used to play a high speed, up tempo, hard fore-checking game. We lost that identity when we lost a love of our speed guys like Tanev. No reason we cant go back to that, just have to mix in the players that bring that.

Those guys the Penguins used to have were just as unproductive in the bottom-6 as their current guys, though.

Not really. They created a lot on a strong fore check that drove opposing teams defence nuts. There are four on ice issues we need to address:
- goal tending, Jarry or otherwise
- power play, its been garbage for years
- defence, Dumo replacement to play with Letang
- bottom 6, needs to be faster, more gritty and hard to play against

Well yeah, I like those guys for that exact reason as well. I'm just saying they had the same production problems that the current bottom-6 has as well.

Blueger, ZAR, Tanev and McCann combined for like 10 points in 60 playoff games.

Wow, went from celebrating this news (thinking "jesus, they're not wasting any time") to the Sullivan let down with it.

Here's my (un)realistic hope:

-New GM gets hired by saying the right things/flattering Sullivan and FSG promising continuity
-Starts making roster moves that he knows the old man will f*** up.
-Team goes into a rut to start the year, FSG finally see the light
-new GM has a fresh face lined up that is a much better fit

Basically, we fail so bad at the start of next season that FSG has to finally give up the ghost and admit Sullivan is cooked.

The fact that not a single word about the coaching has been said yet tells me he has the right ears bent his way. Ridiculous af.

To be fair, the tweet Yohe recently sent where he admitted that he didn't want Sullivan fired because "he's nice to me and I like him" is probably the most insightful tweet we've gotten from Penguin media in years.

They're access whores.

Remember when we were all scared about Guerin becoming the GM lol. Jokes on us. He's done a good job in Minnesota.
I wanted Bill to be our gm. The only one I was hesitant on was Botterill and I'd be fine with him now as well. For me Rusty, Bill, and Botts were 3 I hoped for as future GM's. Was never a fan of how quickly Allvin became an assistant and did nothing in that time to fix wbs with coaching and it's been stuck since.

This franchise deserves Chiarelli or Benning. Make a giant Boston Bruins reunion orgy.

I don't think i can handle another year of watching Bryan Rust play with the last remaining years of an elite Sidney Crosby.
I think a new coach would remove Rusty's protections on that front. Which can only be a good thing.
That happened because Mario didn't want Shero and Bylsma teaming up on a new team together.

Not only that, but the Rutherford to Hextall transition included an explicit mention that Sullivan was their coach and wasn't going anywhere. It's way more likely that is the case this time around as well.
This is why I think you try to "soft fire" Sullivan by "promoting him". I think he is a bad guy. I think he's a sharp hockey guy that can certainly be helpful is other places. We just need something new behind the bench.

I am 100% okay with him taking over as "Head of Hockey Operations" or what BS title Burke had.

I want to go back to these days:

When we were so full of hope for a guy who changed things up and help EVERYONE accountable.

They haven't played like that since June of '16.
