I am totally fine with PLD being part of our core long term. He is the perfect 2nd line centre behind Suzuki. Dach is also clearly part of our core and Slaf will hopefully confirm that he is as well next year.

The way I see it....our core moving forward is....

Suzuki
Caufield
Dach
PLD - I hope
Slaf - I think
Bedard - I pray

Guhle
Hutson

We have great depth at D, but I wouldn't describe them per se as core.

Defensive depth...
Mailloux
Axe
Barron
Harris
Engstrom

Forward depth....
Farrell
Roy
Kidney
Mesar
Heinemen
RHP

We have the makings of a very good team in 4-5 years. All those depth players above project as NHLers
A possible scenario is they wait and see if they can land Smith at the Draft before trading for pld Imo.

some dude posted a photo of him and Dubois at the atwater cocktail club last night - which I must say is a great resto lol
and everyone is freaking the f*** out.
The dude lives in Montreal, mentioned he lives like 15 min walk from the BC -
probably has a very sweet on condo on the lachine canal.

leave the f***ing guy alone!

To those who want PLD...

Do you think he should earn more money than Suzuki?

So that means should we pay PLD over 8 million dollars a year?

I personally like giving him the same amount as Suzuki.

And I'd like if Caufield made the same.

But Suzuki signed his deal a while ago already. And the market changes fast in the NHL. So Dubois' market value may be higher than that. And I'm willing to go higher. Would be great to at least add a 30-30-60 top six winger with size, who's just entering his prime, and who can play center if need be, without giving up much.

We need to be careful on the core we decide on.

Caufield and Suzuki is easy.

My question was.... is PLD part of our core long term?
Not sure what you consider core but why would we have to be particuarly careful. Even if he's not a core player he's most certainly top-6, so in the worst case he would be overpayed by 1-2m because good 2nd line players make 7m fairly easily as FAs. So if the worst case is being overpaid by 1-2m on an 83.5+ cap why do we actually have to be super careful, 1-2m is basically peanuts and isn't ever going to singlehandedly be a problem.

Saw some mentions of the Jets board being unhappy and wanting Dubois gone, it makes sense obviously given he had a rough final stretch while the team collapsed all around and they no-showed in the playoffs, all while seemingly having his foot out the door. But I went back to around January (page 100ish of their PLD thread) before he was hurt and everything went to shit and they only had positive things to say.

Things like how hard of a worker he was, how he was pushing Scheifele down the depth chart, how rare a C of his size and skill is and that he was the kind of C that helps win you championships. They all wanted to resign him and were expecting to pay 9m+ to do it. So yeah, he had a rough final stretch after he got hurt (along with the entire rest of the Jets), but maybe that just plays into our favour and we get him at a cheaper cost than we otherwise would have.

I think acquiring Dubois in the current situation is favorable since he wont necessarily be expected to be the savior of the team. We already have guys like Suzuki, Caufield, Dach,Slaf and this year's pick to absorb a big chunk of the attention.

He re-inforces the identity of the club going forward as an offensive minded team with size, skill and good skating. Gives Slaf a guy he can mold his game to as well...A deep top 6 allows the upcoming forward prospects to come in with no pressure and learn the ropes while playing with good talent around them. He would also make Anderson the Anderson we've been waiting for....which if he does, becomes another high value asset for us.

Yeah he left Ohio in bad terms, but so would I. Winnipeg is not only a hell city to live in, but the leadership core is rotten.

I don't blame him from wanting to GTFO...

He's also on the record saying that he wants to play for a city with high pressure because he thrives in those environments.

Gamble to pick Q player high. I thought Bourque be better too. Q has fallen way off

Exactly
I mentioned this recently

Bourque was a PPG player in the 2nd half of the season in his 1st year pro, he was solid and he's still a really good prospect
Bourque seen him play in his draft year, couple months before he got injured there, I thought he was one of top players in CHL. He was on a role. But it must been the weak Q.

Seen him in Stars game, didn't look like same guy. He might make it, but bottom 6.

One thing for sure, the PLD case is well knowned. The Gazette, LaPresse, Journalde Montreal mentioned it. I guess even LeDevoir section sports mentionned PLD. If HuGo don't bring PLD, they will have to answer questions. Said differently, can they pass on PLD and have it easy?

There's no such thing as getting it easy in their job so I doubt they'll care what the media thinks.

7m 7.5m max.
So what terrible thing happens if we overpay him by 500K?

Whenever I watch Lafreniere play I just don't see the upside he does nothing well and everything ok. He also bobbles alot of pucks and really doesn't show a whole lot of skill when puck handling. Maybe it's a confidence issue or development issue but he legit plays like a third liner you could never tell this guy went 1st overall if you removed the name from his jersey.

That said I understand your sentiment on rather taking a gamble on laffy than Dubois since there's pretty much no risk involved with laffy
I don't know what is going on in New York but watching Laf in this post season vs last is a head scratcher. He was far more dynamic as were his linemates last year. I'd love to see what Marty could do with this Kid's headspace. His puck handling skills don't just disappear but he may be struggling with time and space. He needs to get quicker and play faster. I think he would be a good addition if the price is right.

I think they've already shown they don't give a f***. They will follow their own process and they aren't going to overpay the Jets for PLD and then hand out a too large contract on top, just to appease some talking heads.
