It will be interesting to see how the all Canadian division affects the number of Leafs powerplays. Simmonds ( minus Clifford) and BOGO I don't think moves the needle that much in penalties against which appears to be correlated to powerplays awarded.

I think you might be confused we are talking about Joel Edmunson not Chris Pronger!

Watch and learn ... i don't think you guys realize how strong Edmundson truly is ... when you can muscle around Clifford (not beat him up but muscle him around) than you are top 5 strength wise in league

We've seen him with other teams for many many years.
So you saw him last year as an effective player on a Stanley Cup team when utilized in a suitable role?

If he’s in the top 4, your defense probably isn’t very good. If he’s your 5-6 at ES with PK duties, he’s a useful player that will add some toughness and nastiness around the net that the Leafs could really use.

Finding valuable depth in the bargain bin will be critical to the Leafs success. Hopefully he can provide that in Toronto like he did in Tampa.

Edmundson is NOT a top 4 D
He can play #4th on almost every team in NHL .. except maybe Carolina and Nashville ... is he top 2 no never ... but he can help a team from both a defensive and transition pass perspective .. offensively weak at 15 pts /year but you play him with Petry on your 2nd pair and they get rated #4 in entire NHL for 2nd pairs

Edmundson's most comparable Leafs' counterpart is Zach Bogosian.

It's just that they gave Edmundson $3.5 x 4yrs for some insane reason.

Like I said to someone else go watch him ... Joel has got very good straight line foot speed ... way way faster than Bogo ... i love Bogo but they are not even on same platform on any level speed, hands, strength, puck skills ... they both compete and play a hard game of defense yes .. almost 6ft5 with size and speed it costs you $$$ .. Habs got a deal much like they did with chiarot ... Habs will have best D and G in Canadian division

The playoffs last year are the only time in his career where he played fine. It's not surprising that it came as a member of the best team in the league. He has never been able to handle his role well at any other time.

Your insinuation that I haven't watched him is incredibly condescending. I've seen Edmundson play many many times and he is NOT a 2nd pairing quality defenseman. Disagree if you wish, but leave the condescension out of it. The Habs did not get a deal at all unless his play improves dramatically, which it could, but I wouldn't hold my breath. And calling their 2nd pair 4th best in the NHL is laughable. At this point in time they have half of a 2nd pair (much like we do) until someone steps up and proves they can handle more.

Their D being best in the Canadian division is pretty debatable.

Last 2yrs (1 cup each):

Edmundson (27, 6'4"/215): 132gms, 18:54, 6gls/19pts pace, 1.86ht/gm, 1.49bk/gm
Bogosian (30, 6'3"/225): 92gms, 20:10, 4gls/23pts pace, 1.24ht/gm, 1.55bk/gm

Playoffs

Edmundson (27, 6'4"/215): 26gms, 17:38, 6gls/25pts pace, 2.04ht/gm, 1.80bk/gm
Bogosian (30, 6'3"/225): 20gms, 17:40, 0gls/16pts pace, 2.20ht/gm, 0.95bk/gm

Far more was expected of him in ATL/WPG and Buffalo. Now, with several better d men ahead of him, he can be more appropriately cast in Toronto much like he was with Tampa.

I’m not sold until I see it on the ice but theoretically, it could be a good fit considering his skill set and where the Leafs are lacking.

Encouraging that the coaching staff sees some value in him on that bottom pair out of the gate.

Hard disagree on them having the best D in Canada. Weber is getting very old and the moment he declines any further their D is in trouble. Petry 100% can not be your #1 option if yo want to have a good D.

I daresay Bogosian is actually a better skater than Edmundson, though that's not saying much. Bogo is still a pretty smooth skater out there, though not as fast as he was when he went 3rd overall. Edmundson has always been a choppy skater, though not horrendously slow.

The Habs will definitely play more defensively as a team, as they have no choice, but I take the Leafs' dcorps over theirs pretty handily.

Rielly/Muzzin and Weber/Petry are pretty comparable overall, though the Habs' pair is in their mid 30s which is never a good thing.

Leafs #3 Brodie is clearcut better than anything else the habs have, including their current #3 Chiarot. And like i said, Edmundson is most comparable to Bogosian on the leafs.

And then they each have some young and/or unproven guys at the bottom, it's just that the Leafs have many more of them that are arguably NHl-ready. The Habs have Kulak and Romanov, while the Leafs counter that with all of Dermott and Sandin and Holl and Lehtonen. The Habs' guys don't have more upside than the Leafs' guys, while the Leafs ahve much more depth. The next guy down for the Habs is probably....Fleury maybe? but Fleury isn't even Liljegren-calibre.

I didn't rate Habs 2nd pair as NHL's 4th best ... this is done by stats geeks at Corsica hockey ... which by way have 5 Canadians D in top 50 ... by comparison we have 3 in top 50 (with both Rielly and Muzzy in top 20) ... I did not mean to be condescending ... my point was Edmundson can play as 4th dman on almost every single team in NHL including ours (he is better than Brodie but he plays D not offense) ... we should have got him instead of Brodie as he would have been a better partner for Rielly's game (not that he is a top 2 he isn't) but he would have complimented Rielly much much better

This is true, but that's because Bogosian was always being leaned on as a #2/3 dmen for his teams, which obviously he never was able to be good at. He averaged 21:45 in ice time in ATL/WPG/BUF for most of his career, and wasn't very good at it.

No surprise that he looked much more useful as a #6 dman last year, getting 16-17 minutes of ice time.

I get your point he is a poor technical skater yes I was talking about pure speed from A to B which he is pretty fast ... us D men who are taller never have great form as it is much harder stride

for the record, corsica hockey is no longer active. I know dailyfaceoff still uses their rankings but i'm not sure what numbers they are actually using, since corsica hasn't been active since before last season.
