Bolduc and the Isles have time.

Salo is ahead of him on the left side while Lamoriello MUST bring in a bit of a stud for that side, hopefully via free agency, moving forward.

Going with anymore youngsters behind Pelech at this stage is a no-go.
I like what I’ve seen from Salo thus far.

I believe it’s reasonable to pencil him in as our number #3LHD next year. Although it’s a stretch, he might surprise and in the best of circumstances play to a level of a #2LHD by next year.

Assuming we sign or trade for an established #2LHD in the offseason, our D will be back to a position of strength which has been the foundation of this team’s success the past few years.

Those type of big bodies who don't know how to use them drive me crazy. They have to make sure they have enough skill to fall back on it. Vladimir Malakhov comes to mind. Guy was pretty lazy, didn't like to initiate contact, but at least had enough skill to make it in the NHL. Imagine if he had the edge that Kaspar had? Would have been a machine!!

The circumstances of Malakhov's entry to the NHL + the things that followed him in NA is something I doubt anyone here could overcome. I don't know how that may have been compounded by his own personal mistakes, and I have no idea whether anyone else would have done any better in his position. But one didn't get as skilled as Malakhov did without putting the work in. Absolutely had the talent to be a hall of famer. But I really wonder how any of us would have done dealing with the crap he dealt with in such an incredibly chaotic time.

If Salo keeps progressing at this rate it may not be necessary to bring in a STUD for the left D. I'd be content to roll with the defense we have next season, sans Chara and Greene. Lou's #1 priority should be getting a STUD right winger.

I agree. It doesn't have to be a "STUD", but rather "a bit of a stud".

In other words, we've gotta think that being a contender is going to involve moving on from Greene and Chara on the left side this summer. Salo can replace one, but we need an upgrade on all three in order to not only replace what they bring, but to shoot for improving on them. I say that although I really appreciate Greene's continued all-round efforts and Chara's presence and fists.

As for forwards, wasn't Palmieri the STUD right wing we needed?

I'm starting to believe that this team is never really going to enjoy/experience a real sniper within the realms of this team's build. I just don't think there are many offensive weapons out there who can come into this system and clip at a rate near what they might have before.

I do think that this team should be getting 130 combined goals out of Lee, Nelson, Barzal, Beau, Wahlstrom, and Palmieri every season. Less than that is, in my book, underachieving.

I don't think it even has to be a bit of a stud. If we roll a defense corps that includes Pelech-Pulock, then Dobson, Salo, Mayfield we're already checking off the boxes of two PMDs, two power play point men...we would then just have to round out the D corps with two solid defenders who would be less expensive than "a bit of a stud". The unit has to be sound enough, not all-world. The money we don't spend on a stud defenseman could be spent on a sniping forward.

Playoff Palmieri was on his way to being the 25 goal man who plays with an edge. A good compliment to Anders Lee. I'm not closing the book on him yet. I expect him to return to the back of his hockey card production.

Along with Josh Bailey.

There is the problem. The amount of commitment-money and term-the Islanders made to a group of players who are all streaky and unreliable for production. As long as they all remain our foundation I'm afraid we'll be like the Flyers or the Blues. At best they are good teams that either don't have a star or are going to need a hot goaltender to carry us to a Cup.

people seem to forget that Salo has played 13 games in the NHL. It’s his first year playing a NA game. He’s done a fabulous job and there should be optimism that he will get better and better moving forward. IMO he’s an NHL dman and will likely be an important part of the isles d core moving forward.

only way they bring in a scoring winger is if someone is also moved out. I’d like to see Palms again. I’m not as down on him as some.

He's been steady and shown flashes of what he can be when he has the puck. That's natural ability in his toolbox. The toughest thing for the organization to do with Salo might be resisting the urge to bench him in favor of Greene or Chara when Pulock returns.

Keep playing Salo and let him develop. He hasn't given the staff a reason not to dress every game.

I’m all in favor of moving one or two of our core forwards out when possible.

would it be easier said than done to hope that we get Malinen over next season for Bridgeport?

Salo I’m positive has been asked to do way more than they expected this year and he has been fine, he looks like a solid all around defenseman who still may get a little better.

Salo definitely has been trying to fill into that Leddy role, but give it time. He'll definitely get to be that kind of player soon

I feel like we are suffering because it's obligatory we let Chara hit that most games by a defenseman plateau and can't sit him. It's frustrating to have to carry that weight. He's been dreadful the last few games. We should dress 7 defenseman and just let him fight every 5-10 minutes or so.

Agreed. In the end, Lou is loyal but not stupid and clearly wants one more cup on his resume before retirement.

If the young players continue to grow and Palmieri rebounds to what we saw in the playoffs last year, Bailey seems like the odd man out. Since he isn't physical or a goal scorer, and has the least term remaining.

Cast off the last two years of his contract, while still being a more viable player than Ladd, even if it takes say two seconds, and use that $5 million in cap space to add a sniper.

If the Isles fail to make the playoffs this season, you use the lottery pick to add one final big piece to the system.

Then use whatever near-term firsts (2023 & 2024), any prospect not named Raty or Salo, such as Bolduc, Dufour, etc. to trade for said sniper and go to battle for the next several seasons.

Katic is a big boy. Not sure if there’s any relation to former isles draft pick Mark Katic? Could possibly eventually been an AHL player but not really a guy that has any expectations of playing in the NHL. We’ll see.

Raty scored today(?) against JYP. He's definitely a driving force even when he doesn't score btw. Might end up with around 30 points in Liiga after that bleh season last year for Karpats

hate shirman for a few things but I like that she's on board with Raty playing with fire. He's definitely been an absolute driver of offense and playing like a 1st rounder, not a guy who was lost and fell so far to the 2nd round

Can someone provide some context for Raty producing at basically a point per game clip in the top league in his post-draft season? That's pretty good, right?

Maybe some comparable players?
