The issue here is that Hockey continues to have the reputation of being one of the least inclusive sports. Racist incidents, constant homophobic language used on the ice, etc.

And by saying hockey is for everyone, but players in the league refuse to wear a pride jersey for warm-up because, well, they don't want to be inclusive of LGBTQ+ people.. it's hurting the inclusion that the league is trying to promote.

There is no room in any sport, any room, anywhere for people who would not want to be inclusive of someone just because of their sexual preference.

Why can't they have a pride night without donning special jerseys in the pre-game skate? Why must it include that?

They're still having pride night, catering to people, donating to those charities, etc.

Pride night isn't about wearing a rainbow jersey in warmups.

Whether you like it or not, the point of those nights is visibility. Donations tend to not be super visible unless made on a 4ft by 7ft cardboard cheque.

(I mean, teams can do whatever they want since there is no league policy, but those Pride Nights have a serious Streisand Effect vibe to it lately)

lol

A hockey team was almost caught red handed showing feelings, showing feeling of an almost human nature ...

this will not do.

God forbid we show some compassion ... of course, showing compassion = bending thy knee to some.

God am I ever tired of these stories. About time people are fed up with the rainbow getting shoved down our throats.

At this point in time, 99.9% of people couldn’t care less if you have sex with a man or woman. 20 years ago it was a big deal but at this point everyone is desensitized to it. Those that do have a problem with it are caught up in their ways and won’t be changing their minds at any point in their lives. Why we need to “celebrate” people’s preferred choice of sexual partners makes no sense to me.

Yes, let's use the inclusive language of their campaign slogan and stretch it to homophobes.

I'll forward your complaint to the NHL.. "Hockey is for everyone, except racists, homophobes, etc. etc." should be your new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion tag line.

No one should have a problem with this.

The kids have a pink shirt day at school for anti bullying/awareness.

We forgot about it and he just wore a regular shirt that day. He was in grade 2 at the time.

They left him out of the class picture because he didn't have a pink shirt on. Talk about stupidity.
Sounds like he was done a favor

There will still be a bunch of pride night mentions on the scoreboard throughout the game and seemingly on the board ads as well as the Islanders social media platforms.

But...that's not enough visibility I guess and having the players appear in warm-ups with pride jerseys on pushes things over the edge of acceptability?

Well if you actually read the article: "the Islanders have never worn rainbow jerseys due to an organizational policy against wearing specialized warmups. The only ones they wear are mandated by the league: Hockey Fights Cancer, Military and St. Patrick’s Day."
So basically the only reason it's "news" is to enable loudmouths on all sides to get in more of that sweet sweet outrage they so desperately crave.

Boy do I f***ing love being a political football.

If you're at the game during one of those events you know it's pride night. They say it 500 times.

Yet there never seems to be an issue with someone having to wear military themed shit for the military nights. Why the issue on one and not the other?

Maybe because it's not nearly the 99.99% you think it is and there's still a huge problem in society and this sport in supporting and being inclusive of people who aren't white and straight.

not my point, but you might want to reevaluate your definition of 'everyone'

for me this is a non starter

I am a leftie--but stuff like this is all about freedom of choices and personal rights. The other couple of times this came up and certain people went batspit crazy. I did not see a problem with an individual or organization now wanting to get involved in a hot button situation.

Mods can delete the next statement (please do not give me an infraction) but let me put a twist on something

Say if League X wants to host a Pro-life night or say a religious organization night? And someone or organization did not believe or did not think it was their job to support that night, refused or did not want participate in that function? Most people upset the NYI or a player does not want to wear LGBTQ+ would back their rights not to support the pro life or religion organization.

It is a two way street and I think by dogging people or organizations for not being bullied into doing something is just wrong. Freedom of choice is a lovely two way street.

But, like I said, I am left winger and I can see and understand why this is a hot topic button and why some people just want not to get involved or believe they are being bullied into doing something.

The Islanders shouldn't have a policy against this in the first place!

Being inclusive cant be bad for business
