Former surefire top pair d man Dermott on the outs?

Color me shocked he didn't live up to that unrealistic hype...

Edit: the revisionist history happening now in replies denying these claims happened is comical. The posters denying it may not have been the ones saying it, but many (not all) leaf fans talked him into being a first pair d man when he first came up and looked like a player.

I'm imaging the Leafs are wanting a centre prospect or picks back.

The reason for keeping Dermott would be so that the Leafs aren't completely ####ed if Rielly walked. He's a passable #4 defenceman, and between he & Sandin, would have likely had to pick up a good chunk of the slack.

With Rielly locked in, Sandin & Liljegren having more upside, not really / at all surprising.

As another poster mentioned, they really should be looking for a young centre with some upside. Spezza wont be around forever, keeping Kerfoot beyond this year could be a challenge, somebody's bound to get hurt, and Kampf is a pure shutdown guy.

After losing both Brooks and Amadio, they're also quite shallow in terms of centres they can call up.

Why didn't we just protect Mccann in the expansion? Man the leafs management is so incompetent
because our defense is iffy (everyone has been complaining about it for years) and mccann was really not needed?

I feel like every player Leafs nation over hype eventually gets kicked out of town. Holl is next. Bunting after a decent year and improvements next year will be shipped in year 4.

Because the Leafs likely valued the "potential" expansion picks in the following way:

1. Holl
2. Kerfoot or McCann
3. Kerfoot or McCann
4. Dermott

You protect McCann, it means Holl is likely gone, and then you've also got too much money spent upfront as the Leafs couldn't really afford to keep both McCann and Kerfoot.
