Is this the origin of the waffles in the Olli Jokinen/turkey girl memes?

I completely forgot about John Tavares ethnicity thread! That was weird
it had some odd stuff but it gave us gold like Juan Tavarez
I miss the “this is out house” Canadian Olympic thread. Oh the memes that generated from that spelling mistake
This is 1 I wish I would have gotten into, I saw it and popped in a cpl times but missed all the good stuff :(

The closest thing now is how everything the Canucks do is done quietly after the guy who made the offeason thread about how the Canucks quietly had the best fwd depth in the league and got clowned on for a few months.

Turns out he's actually a genius.

Hopefully the quiet Canucks meme continues, I think it's pretty funny.

Why the fan(s) tossed waffles is beyond me, but it was a form of civil (corporate?) disobedience in reaction to the Leafs hitting a new, pathetic low. How Olli got wrapped up into the phenomenon is beyond me, because he was playing for CGY at the time.

I think it was because he was a weird dude who looked half-baked nearly all the time, plus he was already internet (HFboards) famous for Turkey girl, and that eccentric Finnish dance web player thing where you could move him to the beat of the music.

This is a good summary.

It was the height of Photoshop and gif-making on HFBoards, and we had some real artists. Jokinen was in all sorts of memes. After the waffle throwing, waffles were in all sorts of memes. The gif in post #17 combined those two memes in such a gonzo, perfectly executed way that it was sort of like the climax to a long-running joke.

Incidentally I wish the Photoshop and gif threads were still as active as they used to be. The playoff threads were reliably hilarious and set the tone for in-jokes around here.

Cant forget the one man Minnesota GDT, or Big Rings predicting a Bartowski Goal in a random game, down to the period, months before it happened.

Or the Bruce wings, or the Detroit bench band, or...

The editing and creativity on HFBoards at the time was something else.

That ESPN gaffe on a player bio opened a brilliant pandora's box.

Someone got it going with barrack Obama showing up on Tim thomas' bio, and the rest is history.

Someone in the lounge started a thread with the turkey girl. The first reply was the Olli pic. The next few involved head swaps between Olli, the girl, and the turkey, and the rest was history.

This brings back memories. This used to be a heavenly place with douchebaggery abound, but that land is dead now.

It will come back, I have noticed Western culture since the early 20th century has been on a pendulum.
Sometimes you see a rapid fast swing. Ie after WW1 and into the 1920's then a slow gradual swing the other way till the 60's, then a fast swing the other way, then a slow swing the other way from the 70's till the end of the 90's. Then in about 2005 it started swinging slowly and got pulled way far to one side, I feel in 2023 it hit its peak and it slowly gaining momentum and if the pattern hold, expect to see a rather quick swing the other way, then a slow 1-2 decade swing back the other way.
