I don’t know if there is a problem, but if there is, it’s still here.
It wasn’t ROR or Spezza, Simmonds, Muzzin, etc. That’s not it.

Taxes are a good thing. Does your Mother-in-law have cancer? Mine does. If it wasn't for our taxes she would likely be dead. She could not afford the treatments like it costs in the US. Why do you think every pro althlete detests taxes. They don't. You're projecting a lot of personal ignorance as far as I can tell.

You cannot come on this site and re-invent what facts are.
I can guarantee you that pro athletes detest taxes with the kind of income they earn. They’re in the highest tax bracket.

That’s not projecting.

Robertson or Holmberg? Is Knies not one?

You can fault him for signing/trading for better players than Sandin/Durzi, so they are playing full seasons with other teams.
Robertson? The guy got hit once and exploded. Holmberg? What is he a 4th liner? You are so clueless, it’s scary. This team has no picks and no significant prospects minus Knies, who is probably scared to death playing with this group of wusses

How exactly did he leave us in a good position? He walked all of our stars to UFA as quickly as possible, and after giving them top dollar - which is where we are right now - completely screwed about to either have to massively overpay or lose them.

I love watching the rest of the league signing their young stars to 8 year deals of reasonable AAV.

Dubas is lucky he was fired before having to fix the mess he made here, otherwise it would've finally been obvious how much he f***ed this franchise. I feel bad for Treliving having to figure out his way out of this.

Well, Dubas is doing a fine job in Pittsburgh sending Crosby and Malkin off into the sunset.

The core forwards are taking all the money, but couldn't lead a book club, much less a team of professional athletes to a championship. We went ALL IN last year and lost; the cupboards are bare and the team has very little other than the big guns by way of value left. The league continues to prove that depth is king, but our team is built around a group of elites and the rest are a rotating cast of minimum-3m players. With no real middle of the roster and no cap space or assets left to build that middle thanks to the all-in push, we are not serious contenders for the next few years.

The reason those guys left is simple: we don't have the money to pay them what they want and we can't offer them the competitive opportunity that would encourage them to take less.

I am going to go out on a limb and say people making significant amounts of money don't enjoy giving back significant amounts of money to the government.

Do you like taxes? I'm sure you can donate more to the government if you'd like.

Poor and middle class people accept taxes because they need and benefit from the programs subsidized by those taxes. Rich people don’t need it not use it - they will pay for private schools and medical care if they need it.

We had the money to pay ROR, the problem is they also identify that we can't fill out the rest of the team to the point where it's competitive.

Have you ever lived in New Hampshire? Have you been there? Why don't you try that out for size and tell me how paying less taxes is really great.

Neither Robertson or holmburg have shown that they can play full time at an NHL level.

You literally said "we protected our prospects", which was the reason why our cupboard wasn't empty youth wise. Then listed 2 of the 3 actual prospects we've had that we traded away. One was for Gustafson who was not good in any case ( at least he got a pick). The muzzin trade was fine.

The prospect pool is atrocious for someone who is supposedly a good drafter that's what happens when you trade away picks for shit like big save Dave and cap dumping mrazek. Unfortunately he also traded away 4 of our next 6 first or second round picks

In Texas they "don't pay state taxes" but absolutely bend you over on property taxes. Also if you're rich and can't figure out how to get a good accountant to mitigate your tax damage that's on you

It is crazy how bad the people who rate prospect pools are and how good our board is.

I'd rather live in Texas/Florida/Arizona, earn more in the states, dollar goes further, taxed less, and I can get insurance.

I'm not experienced in living in these areas, but if you love taxes you can pay more. I don't appreciate a large portion of my income going to inefficient solutions for problems.

You will never have an understanding of the world and the human condition by looking at your pay stub every two weeks.

For me, the first sign of problems was when keefe apologized publicly the day after some comments he’s made about his star players. The comments weren’t even that bad, and more importantly, they were true, yet he felt the need to apologize to them publicly and walk the comments back.

That’s the first sign last season that it was the players who run the show, and no one can touch them. It was the most ridiculous thing ever by keefe.

Walking to ufa as quickly as possible would have meant 4 year deals for everyone. Willy and Mitch got 6 and Matthews signed the same 5 year deal all of his peers did aside mcd.
Sid geno toews nash stamkos Tavares kane Kopitar all signed for 5-6 years and at a similar cap%.
They did that to keep the aav down and maximize the rosters flexibility. Locking in all 3 for 8 years probably would’ve meant another 4-5m against the cap each year meaning a much less competitive roster when your guys are in their prime.

Robertson? The guy got hit once and exploded. Holmberg? What is he a 4th liner? You are so clueless, it’s scary. This team has no picks and no significant prospects minus Knies, who is probably scared to death playing with this group of wusses
“No picks” they’re only missing their 2024 1st and a couple 2nds. Have you bothered to look at other competitors draft stock? Florida literally has 1 2nd round pick the next 3 years as far as top 2 rounds go.

For me it was both those things
It’s plainly obvious to anyone with a set of eyeballs that shanny is the real issue and has been the one pulling strings from the beginning

The issue is the person up top refuses to ever execute a rebuild properly. Especially an organizational shuffling. Hired Babcock before a GM, let Lou walk (good call) and promoted the agm and forced the coach on him, now he fired the GM after the GM said changes would be coming if he stayed, now the new GM has to work with the old coach.
SHANNY IS THE PROBLEM

We became a dysfunctional franchise again with everything that went down in the dueling Dubas and Shanahan press confereces. They were both really weird and unprofessional.

Then we fired the GM after just offering him an extension. We look like a joke, so it's not a surprise that we're not seen as a hot destination right now.
Shanahan was pretty clear, that they had a deal, Dubas backed away then came back saying his wife and kids were OK with doubling of the 4m they had agreed to and an increased term!

I doubt he lasts longer than 2 years in Pittsburgh, the guy is a snake and a megalomaniac.

But whatever it looks very dysfunctional atm, Keefe is OK but not a great coach, Dubas allowed the player(s) to neuter him, the dressing room I believe is split and might be irretrievable as far as bringing it back into focus.

It reminds me of the split that was created in Sundins dressing room by a certain player with a God complex, it eventually brought the whole thing down, forcing the Leafs to get rid of the teams top players and then having to start over. Good thing RW was there to become the fans Lightning rod.

This is starting all over again and it's a goddamned crying shame.

That was never happening. He walked away from 8 x 11-11.5 from the island and reported 7 x 13 in San Jose and similar 11m range in Dallas and Boston.
Covid absolutely cooked this teams long term planning
Covid certainly threw a wrench into the works, but those two contracts handed out to Marner and Matthews were and are the real problem, Will was only slightly overpaid in regard to his comparables the other two were 3m over, what did the other 40 goal guys at that time get? 8s, 9s? Any full NMCs? No they did not, but why did 16 and 34 get them?

Cushy to retire? These guys can move wherever they want once their career is over. They're playing in the pressure cooker that is Toronto instead of Florida, Arizona, North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, etc. That doesn't scream cushy. It speaks to players who want to win and feel like this team can do it, IMO.
The truth is that they are all Toronto guys who never left no matter where they've played, Toronto has always been home to them, they all had houses here throughout their whole careers.

Of course. There's a huge difference in living here and living + playing here though.

What rankings are you going by no one rates our pool higher then 15th. It's getting pretty obvious we have no one. We now have the biggest scouting advantage in the NHL we have no excuses not to draft well.

I live in the US I get charged 250 a month for insurance then pay into the other stuff ( medicaid, SS etc) that I don't even get to access anyways. Then when I go to the doctor I still need to pay ($45 the clinic, up to 1000 if I get really sick) .No system is perfect but you can bet I hate that $250 off my pay when it doesn't really help that much.

If you're an NHL player the first thing probably doesn't matter, but the no tax states will get you on other stuff like tolls, property tax etc.

In PA for example it's gonna cost you like $60 to go from Pitt to Philly.

Also as stated before if you have a good money manager you don't really have tax issues and someone like Auston Matthews probably has his main residence in AZ. Since he gets paid mostly in bonus cash it most likely gets taxed mostly there. You can work around tax rates if your a millionaire
