Fans take these decisions so personally. Glad we got a player of his caliber, even for a fleeting moment, but now we move on. This is a business.

This is also why I would have preferred we continued building through the draft, to avoid these types of scenarios by building loyalty amongst our players.

You can only build through for so long then you have to bring in outside help.

Maybe those around here with bozo the clown photos can now see that they slapped those photo shops on the wrong guy.

Oh man, gonna be a lot of crow served around here this year. Kyle did good work this off season so far.

Cool, if I was the coach I’d probably ignore a player telling me how to do my job as well. Ror is a mercantile type who’s played on more teams than I have had full time jobs in my lifetime
Really? Three teams before Nashville is more than full time jobs you have had in your lifetime? Tells me you haven't lived as yet.

ROR was a hell of a player, a main cog that drove that St.Louis team. Keefe, what has he accomplished as a coach and as a player?

Jaques Plante one of the greatest goalies ever played for 6 various teams. Marion Hossa, one of the games greatest 2 way forwards played for 5 different teams. Gretzky played for 4 different teams-greatest ever.

Once you actually live a little instead of pointing your finger you might start to see a few things,

Hilarious thread. Nobody knows what ROR said in exit interviews. Schenn took the money, ROR prob went for money and to live in music city (recall the interview he did where he revealed how important music is in his life, do you really think he has a better shot with Nashville?), and Acciari is irrelevant.

Even guys like Morgan Rielly have publicly stated they want to re-up Matthews however it gets done. Dont kid yourself, our top players are attracting talent.

The tax rationale is legit too… huge impact for players in Canada.

What was the issue with ROR?
(far too much to read after being away)

The cancer is the core's money-first attitude and Toronto's desire to keep running the four guys back. There's no cash to go around.
From the outside that looks to be the case. However, until Matthews and Nylander sign (or are moved) and we know how much they sign for, we don't really know that for sure.

However, The Bertuzzi singing seems to have a lot of noise around it tht he came to Toronto because it was the best deal on the able in terms of dollars. He may make this team better, but Toronto was willing to pay more for 1 year than most other teams and no one wanted a high dollar deal for more years (allegedly).

The core is good enough in terms of talent to win. The moves made may be enough to 'change the character' or 'shake things up' enough to push them farther in the playoffs. Yet it seems like a lot of players are coming to Toronto NOT because they want to be here, but because it is where they can make the most money compared to other offers.

-Pastrnak might be almost the goal scorer that Matthews is and he is signed for $11.1m
-Tage Thompson in buffalo almost hit 40 last year and almost hit 50 this year playing hurt for the last quarter of the season and he just signed long term for $7.1m
-Tkachuk was dominant in the playoffs, very good all season and is signed long term for $9.5m.
-Jack Hughes might already be a top 10 player and a possible future MVP, and he just signed long term for $8m
-Hintz put up almost 40 in each of the last 2 years, this year would have hit 40 if not for missing some games, and he just signed long term for $8.4m
-Robertson in Dallas signed only for 4 years, but he put up 41 and 46 the last 2 years and he signed at $7.7.
-McKinnon's deal is almost over, but part of how Colorado was a great team is he was criminally underpaid for just about his entire last contract.

I know there are reasons and timing was involved with those deals...but in Toronto can we get one or two deals done with top players that look like obvious bargains like the above? Doesn't have to be the whole team, but SOMETHING like the above at some level?

Yeah we stopped improving when we stopped drafting. Never ever trade 1sts but we never learn

Never ever trade 1st round picks?

Please tell that to Vegas who have basically told the draft to go f*** itself for their entire history and have

2 finals
2 conference finals
1 championship.

Or Colorado who traded a 1st for Darcy Keumper and won a cup.

Or Tampa who traded 2 for Coleman and Goodraw and won 2 championships and went to 3 straight finals with another in 2015.

Or Pittsburgh who have been doing it since about 2008 and have 4 finals and 3 cups to show for it.

Or LA With the Jeff Carter trade

The Ducks with Pronger

The Wings with Hasek.

Never ever trade a 1st? That's a ridiculous position to take and I just proved it.

If we kept every 1st we’ve had over the last 7 years, we’d be a much better team than we are today. You are however entitled to your opinion. I’d be willing to bet if we never made a trade or signed a UFA and just drafted players over the last 7 years we’d be better today.

That the leafs locker room is so cancerous that our FAs had to sign elsewehere

I could not find the podcast where a player that left commented on the room and have read and watched so much cannot remember who said this.

He said it was not cancerous but just dead as can be.
Nobody ever gets mad,no stick breaking or yelling or super pissed off swearing, just nothing.

Nobody hates each other,no arguing and a big oh well attitude.

There was no big team stuff, they don't do all players team stuff on the road or parties like other teams.
They were 2 or 3 guys hang out and after games they just scatter.

it may be why Tree kept commenting on Reaves and his all team involved stuff and outspoken ways is needed and that he could help turn around the culture.

I know for a fact we wouldn't be, because that gives us a #1 goaltender with 10 games of NHL experience and a backup with 0.

Can't do that

The quiet nature of the room was mentioned in an article. No doubt about it. This team isnt exactly the chippy type.

I don't doubt it. Tavares is so quiet as a personality. He'll never change (there's nothing wrong with that). It doesn't have to be high energy (Robin Williams on coke) type of an atmosphere. Even if the locker room is quiet/somber does it make it "bad"?

We didn’t have the picks to draft a goalie. Who knows who we would have drafted with all the picks we traded away. Certainly there were good goalies drafted in the last 7 years.

The problem is that Shanahan pissed away the rebuild.

Shanahan had a plan all right. It just so happened to be a bad one. Now he's gone and flushed it all down the toilet.

Like seriously, how dumb is this guy?

That's a question a roomful of Nobel prize winners couldn't answer. An array of scientists could be dispatched in failed attempt to quantify the ignorance of this man. Shanahan is so spectacularly stupid his inanity approaches some ideal and absolute beyond human comprehension.

Infinity knows no bounds.

He fumbled the rebuild worse than I ever could have thought possible. Whatever bad advice he got, and chose to follow, couldn’t possibly begin to account for all the club killing moves this moron made. All the problems with this team are a direct result of decisions Shanahan made. He's like a dog that pisses all over everything.

Now it stinks and is running down the gutter.
