In their heads they already won the SC mid through the season and tried to make the season as epic as they could. Spend too much effort in the process.

There is a celebratory mood in this thread.

But do all the people celebrating want to see Toronto have a clear path to the Stanley Cup?

Because that is what has happened now that Boston is out.

Boston playing at their best was the only team in the East who maybe could have beaten Toronto.

I think NYR can beat them.

Toronto is a very good team but they are not clear cut better then Carolina, devils, or the rangers. Just because the leafs finally passed their demons doesnt totally erase all their failed close out games of the past 5 years.

I think NYR can beat them.

They have to get by nj first. I feel if the rangers can get by nj they stand a good chance to get to the final but the devils are the stylistic worst matchup.

I think the Rangers are the only team left in the East that could give Toronto trouble.

They have talent and depth at forward, an elite defenseman in Fox, an elite goaltender in Shesterkin, etc.

But I am concerned they won't be able to beat the Devils.

Toronto will sweep the Panthers right? Imagine if Florida took out Toronto. The two fanbases would have a shared trauma.

Seriously though, looking back on it, Tampa won the cup the next 2 years, made the Finals the next 3 and were a game away from the Finals the year before they were swept.

The 2019 team was the most dominant one during the season. And they had a 3-0 lead at home in game 1. How did they not win a single game the year they were so dominant in the regular season?

Outside of Boston and Bruins fans, the entire hockey world wanted to see this happen, even just a little bit. It's okay you can admit it. It's such a fascinating and painful story, but it makes things so much more interesting. I mean this is truly an epic moment for the wrong reasons.

This is utter nonsense.

The parity in the NHL these days means that anyone can give anyone trouble. The Leafs have won a single round and will be up against teams just as good as them. But shock horror, now they’re world beaters. I want to be happy for their long suffering fans, but it’s like watching England at the World Cup. Unjustified arrogance spills out.

Parity is the same reason why this isn’t the biggest choke job ever too, imo.

Yes. 4 straight losses to blow a 3-1 series lead after putting up record wins in the regular season.

Nah, Tampa vs Columbus.

Bruins got to overtime of game 7.

Tampa keeled over and died in 4 straight.
Again: Boston also lost 4 straight except they blew a 3-1 series lead. It is impossible to choke harder.

Setting the wins/points record while also blowing a 3-1 series lead does make me stop and think that it possibly is.

But it still feels like Tampa Bay from four years ago holds this title. To play the way they did in the regular season and then get dumped in four straight was absolutely shocking.

Though I did pick the Bruins to win this series, I was never going to be surprised by a loss. Part of that is seeing what happened to the Lightning and part of that was that many of us thought they were taking a big step back prior to the beginning of the season and that incarnation of the team might rear its head at any point.

It’s both awesome to see Florida oust them and sad to see the Bruins not able to come close to putting the finishing touches on a historic season.

Isn't this Florida team actually better on paper than last year's President's Trophy winner?
Just that Maurice almost managed to blow it?

Didn’t the Bruins struggle with Florida in the regular season? It wasn’t a good matchup for them for a 1 vs a wild card.

The Bruins were 3 wins closer to a cup than Tampa fwiw. To me that makes the Tampa choke bigger.

It's Tampa because they not only got swept, they got outplayed. It's not like they dominated Columbus and lost because of goaltending.

They were crushed.

I don't know if it is, Florida has a really good roster there is alot more parity in the league than there was pre salary cap, just go back to 2002, 2003, 2004. look at some of those teams that beat the big guns of the league. they weren't even close in talent
