Is Rick Rypien, pound-for-pound, the best fighter in the NHL?

I need to see Rypien fight Arron Asham and Cam Janssen before he can be crowned the best pound for pound fighter in the league. Those other 2 are extremely good too and they're around Rypien's size.

well you just saw rypien whoop janssen, and most likely broke his nose. it was leaking like a faucet for a good 5 minutes. although rypien got a match penalty for having tape on his thumb/wrist

Well, he just blew up Janssen's nose, so that's one down.

What a weird rule about the tape...I can understand of his knuckles were taped, but it wrapped around the base of the thumb for the tape on his sprained wrist.

I guess the silver lining is sprained wrist and all, Rypien got some good licks in on Janssen? I am not a Janssen fan and was very satisfied with the scrap.

That was an impressive display of fighting by Rypien. He went toe to toe with Janssen and schooled him with speed and skill.

Great tilt. I think Janssen had the edge until the last few lefts by Rypien.... Still have yet to really see Rypien get stunned or bloodied from a punch ?

Apparently the team has some reasons to be upset.

“We got put in a very tough position by that major penalty. In my opinion it was not the right call,†said Vigneault.

“The call clearly states that there has to be a cut. There was no cut. There's a broken nose. The tape was on Ripper's right hand, he threw punches with his left, got him good a couple of times, broke his nose, that's not a cut. I thought the interpretation of that was wrong and it put us behind the eight-ball there.â€

Vigneault said Rypien wears the tape to protect a sprained thumb.

“We've checked it with the league, we've told them what it was and for some reason this referee crew did not get the information. He's had it for a month, in all his fights (in that time) and it's never been an issue before. We're going to check it with the league tomorrow to make sure it's not an issue in Dallas.â€

It's a bit of an odd rule, IMO, that it only results in a match penalty if a player is cut. If they want a match penalty, it should be used if the player is cut or not.

It seems like the idea behind the rule is solid, but the way the rule is designed itself is not.

Didn't get the ruling, don't think I've ever seen that before.

Was a great fight between those two. One of the best I've seen. Rypien's quickly becoming my favorite fighter in the League.

I would have said Janssen before their fight but Rypien took it to him.

I would like to see him start moving up and fighting the "second tier" of heavy weights. Guys like Parros, Rupp, Peters, Boulton. He could give those guys a lesson or 2 but still stands no chance against the legit heavies like BGL, Brash, Orr, Grats, Boogard

LOL at the most recent Stortini fight. Those were some pathetic elbows Stortini was trying to throw, he probably found out there was no way he could beat Rypien by out striking him so he wanted to end the fight by cutting him so the ref would jump in so he took some Muay Thai lessons. What a plug.

Anyways, Rypien is THE BEST P4P FIGHTER IN THE NHL. I hate how you guys deny that fact. I even see some comments on Youtube of people saying how Rypien has a weak cross. What Pejorative Slurs, who would tihnk a amateur boxer trained by a golden gloves winner has a weak cross.

Rypien's fights are fun to watch. Unlike NHLers who have no idea how to fight and just swing the haymakers, Rypien has technique, and he's not afraid to go toe to toe with people, because he's never the one to stop swinging, it's the other guy. Rypien beats up guys way bigger than him due to his skill in boxing, and I don't need to see him fight Boogaard, Chara, Ashan, Artuykhin to know that he's the #1 P4P fighter in the league because he is, and he's a fighter as well as a NHLer. If ANY of you have trained in martial arts or boxing, you would know what I mean, but sadly, the majority of you are just "tough guys" who watch UFC and award a win for a fight due to the most punches thrown.

i love how people go around explicitly stating "rypien would stand no chance against boogard/chara..etc etc.

I think no one here is stating that rypien will always beat people who have 70 pounds on him, but it's like some people really have to re-enforce an idea shouldn't even exist.
