Is Rick Rypien, pound-for-pound, the best fighter in the NHL?

Maybe you should try re-reading every post I've written in this thread.

For the 30th time, most NHL fighters are NOT very skilled fighters. Many don't even start to train with someone of knowledge until they hit the NHL and even then, they don't get the training they need. When you are NOT VERY SKILLED and run into SOMEONE SKILLED, the PERSON WITH THE SKILL has the GREATER ADVANTAGE over the person WITH THE SIZE.

Maybe you are missing the point. Rypien is a good little fighter. When he consistently fights the Godards, McGrattons, Laraques and other legitimate NHL top fighters and wins then his "skill" will be worth bragging about. He is beating smaller players because of his training. Put him up against other trained fighters of the same size and his win percentage will drop, or have him fight actual tough guys, not Prust and then see where he stands. I have watched him since he was young and he wants nothing to do with a legitimate NHL calibre tough guy. The three I listed above will kill him, hockey fighting ability and size. Most hockey fighters are not trained boxers, they aren't boxing, they are fighting on skates.

Personally it's guys like Souray or Chara, who go all ****ing angry and hate crime people that are the best pound for pound in my opinion.

They have that anger strength and just destroy people.

?? Hmm I wasn't aware that rypien was considered big enough so that the guys he beats on are considered smaller than him.

luckily you're aware that weightwise rypien is noticeably smaller than laraque godards...etc right ?

Another great Rypien fight, this one is from last night. I'd give a draw.

I've done some fight watching and come to the conclusion Ryp is the best p-4-p fighter in the league because of 3 reasons, 1) can throw punches from either side, so the opponents are unsure of a plan 2) GREAT balance 3) has a sound fighting strategy depending on who he's fighting, e.g. he knows their style, strengths, weaknesses etc.

While I don't think he's necessarily the strongest 180-185lb player in the NHL, he's surely the best fighter that size.

Try 2-1 or at best 2-0-1. Rypien didn't win that fight.

You are absolutely right. I have to give Stortini credit. He got beaten up the first time he fought Rypien, and lost a decision the second time, but he keeps coming back for more and does better each time. It was Rypien in a defensive posture with his guard up most of that fight, not Stortini "hugging."

And even in that defensive position Rypien landed jabs. Rypien won the fight by a slight margin.

There's no way Stortini won that fight

Call it what you want, but most people agree Rypien won the fight. At least according to hockeyfights.com http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/90481

Hockeyfights voting is pretty much worthless. It's a popularity contest or people just voting for their guy regardless of the results. A guy could get one punched and be laying in a pool of blood, and he'd still get at least 5-10% of the vote, probably even more of it he plays for a popular team.

Dropyourgloves.com is a better site for reviews, there are less votes, but it's moderated and people with clear bias will have their reviews taken down.

I'd go so far as to say that if Rypien gave up hockey, he could be the next Manny Pacquiao.

If he works on his jiu-jitsu, he might be better than Anderson Silva.

I actually have thought that he could have a career in either boxing or MMA. The guy can flat out fight, and it's amazing how he's fighting these guys who are constantly bigger than he is.

I am so tired of hearing about Rypien...he is a heck of a fighter for his size, and a below average hockey player. I cringe every time I see him fight because I know there will be "fisherman's tales" the next day on the board on how he destroyed whoever.

We get it...he is smaller then most of the guys he fights, and yes he wins more then he loses...but is he really worth 16 pages?

I cant believe I just added to this thread....

Hockey fights and MMA are two way different things.. I doubt Rypien has much of a future in MMA if he went into it right now.

I think he's won more fights than the Oilers have won games

So has my grandma...
Neither she nor the Oilers are worth 16 pages either.

The Oilers and the Canucks are going to win the same number of playoff series this year though....

Well obviously he couldn't just go into it tomorrow and fight at the next event. But as someone mentioned, if he worked on his jiu-jitsu he could probably have a pretty good career in MMA.

I need to see Rypien fight Arron Asham and Cam Janssen before he can be crowned the best pound for pound fighter in the league. Those other 2 are extremely good too and they're around Rypien's size.

w00t! 1000th post!

Those two both weigh 210 lbs., which is closer to Laraque's size (245) than Rypien's (170).

Just bloodied Cam Janssen.
Rypien received a game misconduct for having tape on his hand (his knuckles weren't taped).
