I feel bad for Hughes, he's on an island back there for Van. Put Makar on this dumpster fire right now and he's not looking nearly as good, but Avs fans can flex, they've got some young studs
I dunno, Makar dominated the ice in all zones the last few games when the Avs have been without MacKinnon, Toews, EJ and a few others. Can't see Hughes doing that no matter how good Vancouver would be.

I don't think he's "overrated" in the sense that he's an incredible puck moving defensemen already at such a young age. It all seems very natural for him to bring the puck up the ice and create plays and make things happen with his fantastic vision.

Having said that, on the defensive side of things, it's a little bit of a tire fire. I won't judge solely based on his +/- which is by far the worst on his team, but just by watching him play, you can't help but noticed how lost he is in the d-zone. We're not just talking about blown coverage either, we're talking full on basic defence here. It doesn't help the the rest of the defence in Vancouver isn't particularly good, but you can't help but think that a coach needs to spend some serious time with him to make sure this doesn't become a long term problem.

Yes, he's young and he makes young player errors, but he's a jewel and you don't want to waste his talent long term.

The Avs fans who haven't just started to follow their team know very well how much worse especially a young player can look when he's on a weak and badly coached team. Makar got his Calder, now let's move on and give Hughes some time to calm down, learn and grow.
Im curious if Nucks fans would "move on" if Hughes won the Calder? They were relentless last season bashing Makar and pumping Hughes every chance they got. Avs fans sat back and just said, ok Makar is still better. Im all for being the bigger fanbase now, but lets not pretend like Nucks fans didnt have a bit of this coming.

hughes is a very good player just having a 2nd year slump which is common. he will tear it up next year. i dont understand why the entire team is struggling.

He's not having a sophomore slump, this is who he is. I mean, he's leading all defenceman in scoring.....it just comes at a cost.

Weird take, Vancouver was good last year and were supposed to be even better this year. They're not Ottawa/Detroit tier of bad. They have a lot of young talent and were supposed to take the next step.

You say you're all for being a bigger person yet doing the exact opposite.

What type of contract is he looking at this offseason?

Vancouver fans can't be happy watching him pile up PP points while getting caved on a nightly basis 5 on 5.

I'm only one person, but I can assure you I'm giving QH a pass seeing as he went from having an absolute stud of a defensive partner last season to the situation he is in now.

He is absolutely the least of my concerns right now as a Canucks fan.

Most knowledgeable people expected the Canucks to take a small step back this year. With that said in actuality the Canucks have played atrociously to start the season. Have you watched many Canucks games this year?

Seems like it’s the fans of other teams—with you being one of the worst culprits—who can’t “move on.”

How are the canucks this bad defensively? It isn’t all Hughes fault they give up 5 per game. This is nuts.

The Canucks were a poor defensive team that got rid of two good defensive players in Tanev and Stecher, while also dumping Markstrom who was their MVP. If they brought back all 3 they were still due for a step back.

If Huggy Bear won the Calder, Avs’ fans would still be hearing about it. Canuck fans are the absolute worst for overrating their players. Huggy Bear is a good player, he’ll win a green jacket (maybe multiple), but he’s more of a 4th forward/PP specialist. He will get his points, but he sucks at everything else.

It's almost like most teams don't have pure upward trajectories and some take a step back before taking two steps forward. Weird take indeed.

Canuck fans were saying how great Huggy Bear was defensively last season and he’s the best thing since sliced bread. I always thought he was a 4th forward/PP specialist. He doesn’t play D. He’s all offense. He gets tossed around in the corners/front of the net. Convert him to a forward! He gets dangled every game.

How many green jackets will he win? He’s Tyson Barrie 2.0.

This discussion has gone off the rails lol

That being said, the overwhelming negative response is not surprising considering that the greatness of Quinn Hughes was shoved down everyones throaths for a year.

They're still not a team with a severe lack of talent. A lot of young players could only dream of playing with Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, Edler, Holtby, Miller etc.
Again, he's not on a bottomfeeder type team. You can excuse a player for looking bad if they're on Detroit or Ottawa, but I'd kill to see some of the Wings prospect get an opportunity to play for a team as good as Vancouver. If we want to say Hughes is not to blame for Vancouver playing bad, and isn't ready to be a player that is a major driving force of a team being good, then that's completely changing the discussion on Hughes from last season.

Is Cale Makar this generation's Tyler Myers? Or its Barrett Jackman?

I think he is this generations Brewer....

Also I am offended that people are offended about the rich mans Barrie comparison..

He is proving in Edmonton right now that he is still a 50-60 point/ year offensive D-man.
Hughes could very well the PPG equivalent of him which really isn't bad in the least.

Similar to Barrie I think you will always have to shelter him or you are probably making a huge mistake.
Barrie also had seasons where he looked decent-average defensively next to the right partner when sheltered the right way eating offensive minutes and producing offensively for the Avs. He even had stretches where he looked good against tougher competition but ultimately in the long run you were better off sheltering him and having someone else eat the harder minutes.
I think Hughes will be similar but better offensively especially on the PP...

So yeah.
People that think Hughes will turn into a #1 superstar two-way D are overrating him by quite a bit IMO...
People that think he has the potential to be the best offensive D that always will need sheltering and used in the right way IMO are closer to the truth...

The only thing I will say is that last year everyone was saying Quinn was a year younger than Makar. Well, now he’s a year older and the same age as Makar was last year and he’s nowhere near the level defensively that Makar was last year. Offensively yes... but that’s not the point everyone is looking at.
