JT Miller is having 1 good season where he’s actually not a defensive liability. Pettersson is still much better.

Hughes has done nothing to be that above EP.

Let's be real here.

EP > Hughes at this point especially when you take into effect he has put up better offensive numbers and is more well rounded. Nor doesn't get injured as often.
I wouldn’t even take Jack over Quinn.

If Petey could play C consistently and drive his line one day, we can start putting him up there. Not when he is playing wing with Miller.

Barkov has no business being talked about in a top 5 thread
Your post is proving him right. Barkov absolutely should be discussed about in a top 5 center discussion, if we want to do more than just stat watching.

Edit. Also just want to clear out my point: While one can argue a solid top 5 list without Barkov, he absolutely belongs in the discussion.

Can someone explain to me why so many posters are saying that Jack Hughes is a top-5? I get it if we were including potential or value but i don't see why he would currently be a better pick than Barkov who is a better 2-way player and has a better career ppg.

He's not. I like the player but he's quite overrated.

I have him below EP and with more consideration below Barkov atm.

McDavid
Mackinnon
Matthews
Drai/Barkov/Crosby

EP/Hughes/Miller/Aho
Barkov and Crosby are not in the same tier as Drai. Both aren't better than EP either.

Aho doesn't belong here.

Career PPG is irrelevant for "currently" discussion. Generally i would say most people would take 20 points advantage over elite defensive play (like peak Malkin vs peak Datsuyk)
Last year Hughes had 10 points advantage per 82 games. This year this gap is probably bigger.

I think the extra points depends on how big of a difference there is between the two players. I would still pick Barkov over him if we're talkng this season only. If i wanted more points but not as good defence i'd go with Pettersson. Don't see Hughes currently having and edge over either but that will probably change soon as Jack find his two-way game and he has time on his side.

And it's not like i'm a Jack hater, in the poll before the season i had him breaking 100 this season.

Let's see. Clearly ahead of him are MacKinnon, McDavid, and probably Matthews as well.

Some centers having a good season are J.T. Miller, Sam Reinhart, Leon Draisaitl, Sebastian Aho. I doubt three of these would go ahead of Pettersson, regardless of the specific order. So I went with Yes, but it's pretty close

This year, I put Barkov 5, Miller 6, Petey 7. Barkov's 2 way game is other worldly, and Miller is just so consistent in other areas. Petey has many invisible games.
Pettersson's two-way game is good, I don't see how Barkov could make up for the gap in offense there.

Yes, Petey defense is good, but Barkov's is great. As well as more consistent game to game. I would also argue Barkov's offense is more consistent. Petey has lots of games where he looks like a top 3 center offensively (better than Barkov indeed), but also has lots of clunkers where he looks completely disinterested and making many mistakes with the puck (defensive consistency).

That is enough for me, but you could pick either one depending on what you value more. I'll always lean more complete and reliable when we are talking about 2 players that are routinely over a point per game.
