Even if he was on top of his game, top-5 is difficult in a league with McDavid, Drai, Barkov, Mackinnon, Matthews.

When he's off his game, he's essentially an elite 3rd line center. And unfortunately him being off his game is becoming a regular thing.

So to me, the answer is definitively No.

As a Habs fan, not sure we'd trade Suzuki for him. And Suzuki is maybe Top 15

Here's the thing, I think he played incredibly poor over the last half of the season and embarrassed himself in the playoffs, even with his admitted injury. But I think this guy is going to rebound in a major way and end up top five in scoring next year. Bookmark it.
Not working out so well is it?

Something is still off with him but I'm not sure what, sometimes he looks okay but on the same shift he still will look hesitant.

Danault in his prime was playing top 6 minutes. To me the term "elite 3rd line" is an oxymoron. If you are an elite player you are not a 3rd liner.
Because Montreal had no top 6 center.

Not even close. He is NOT a top 40 player in the NHL. Easily one of the very most overrated players in the league.

Good old fashioned jinx thread.

Had 22 goals and 57 points in 42 games heading into his next game on January 13, 2024 (43 goals/111 points/82 games)

Has 19 goals and 50 points in 62 games since (25 goals/66 points/82 games).

With 1 goal and 6 points in 13 playoffs games sandwiched in between.

Nowhere near top 5 for nearly a whole calendar year now.

He hurt his knee and then who knows what happened. Seemingly lost a ton of confidence in his game after that. Been playing better lately, though still missing some dynamism from his game. 16 points in his last 11 games. 21 in 23 on the year. Top 5 Cs can’t really be pulling that type of disappearing act though even if they’re playing through something.

He has 13 in his last 11 and 18 in 22 on the year. He’s just not a top 5 C, not in this league where the spots ahead of him get filled up by McDrai, MacKinnon, and Matthews without blinking.

16 in his last 11 games.

I'd say he's top 15, maybe top 10. But he's not on that elite upper tier despite being paid like it.
