Is Keefe the right coach for this team at this time.

If we want to win the Cup, we have to beat these teams
I mean, I get the point, but that's not even necessarily true.
That we haven't beaten these top defensive teams, Vezina winners.. I'm not upset about it, not mad at the players, coach or GM, that maturity takes time, but I think maybe it's been enough time, to see more from these guys now.
I would also like to see more, but what we've seen isn't really any different than what you see with other cores. Even older, proven ones. People just don't seem to realize that because unlike other teams, we don't have all of those easier matchups in between.

keep the spin going but as has been explained to you by a number of posters we did miss the playoffs this year because we lost in the PLAY-IN round so that means we missed the playoffs

based on your interpretation you could also say no team ever misses playoffs because the regular season is basically a play-in round to see who qualifies for the playoffs

and it's obvious you ignore actual results based on how you keep implying based on your ''context'' how we had a successful season this year , lol

The Habs made the "real playoffs", would you trade rosters with them? Would you say that they are closer to a cup than we are based on that win?

Whatever other name you want to call it is irrelevant. We factually did not miss the playoffs. You don't get to decide. The NHL does. There's no reason to think the Leafs will start missing the playoffs.

what does this have to do with anything ?

and what witty point do you think you're making ?

we factually missed the playoffs as have been explained to you by multiple posters

and no one's arguing whether we will continue to miss the playoffs

As has been explained to you multiple times, you are wrong. You do not have the authority to overrule the NHL.

The following eight teams in each conference play in the Qualifying Round, featuring best-of-five series (#5 vs. #12, #6 vs. #11, #7 vs. #10, #8 vs. #9) to determine who advances to the First Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. These series use playoff overtime rules.

nice of you to provide a link that says we didn't qualify for the 1st rd of the playoffs just like we're all telling you , lol

Except it didn't say we didn't qualify for the playoffs. What it did say was this:
The NHL announces on May 26, 2020, the conclusion of the 2019-20 regular season as well as a modified competitive playoff format that features 24 teams
The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin with the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers
Very clear, addressing the specific question. It's the playoffs.

Babcock was on a 78 point pace, and even in the most cherry picked time-frame you could find for Keefe, he was still at an 85 point pace, even with horrible goaltending and constant injuries, especially to his defense. Most of the underlying metrics maintained fairly well through all of Keefe.

Markstrom had a better year this past year, but when looking at a bigger sample, I'm not sure you can say Markstrom is an upgrade. We don't know if he wanted to come here, and it took a 6m x 6 year investment to get him anyway, which means losing something else off the roster.

Not sure which goalies under contract you mean. I guess Kuemper was kind of thrown around, but again debatable on if he's an upgrade, and the price was reportedly quite high.

Again, you said you like Andersen, so not sure what the issue is. Good job by Dubas for keeping him, right?

67% of Keefe’s games, is a cherry picked stat.?
Who would of known.

yes it's very clear , it says it gave us the opportunity to qualify for the first rd of the playoffs , unfortunately we lost in the playoff qualifying rd and didn't qualify for the 1st rd of the playoffs as was said in the link you provided

but lets be honest , no one cares about actual results , what really matters is putting the season in context which means we actual were the team that hoisted the cup

damn i had a great time at the x/cup parade and can't wait until they release the design of the rings , i'm thinking of ordering a replica to celebrate our 10th x/cup in row streak

The Lightning didnt win a single playoff game the previous year and didnt even take first in their division this year...and yet they were still the favorites to win the cup in most circles. Why?

Because they routinely outplayed their opponents and had solid fundamentals throughout the lineup. They didnt touch the core and instead tinkered with the supporting cast a little bit and then went on the run to win the cup. They didnt fire the coach but instead just gave him the tools to win.

The Leafs big issues last year under Keefe were goaltending (both starting and backup), injuries, especially to the backend (exposing the lack of defensive depth) and a real disappointing season from the bottom two scoring lines. Campbell looks like the first solid backup we've had since McBackup too.

I dont think we'll be seeing the injury issues we saw last year and there was a real push to add depth throughout the lineup. I think Andersen is the key to the season though as he will be playing for the big money this year. After 3 straight years of being a top 10 goalkeeper in the league, his fall to a well below average starter was devastating to the team. If he can get back up to the top ten, this team is getting 115 points. The marked improvement in shots and scoring chances against under Keefe will certainly help him get there.

Do you have an injury crystal ball,
last year Leafs were 13 th in man games lost I think, so nearly the midpoint

nice post but i don't understand why you replied to me

Far too early to say. We had a spectacular first 20 games under him, which sometimes happens just from the freshness of change, and things kind of evened out for the remainder of the season, but he definitely should get some time before this sort of decision is made on his future.

Every time there's a new goalie/player/coach the opponents take a while to find the weaknesses

For example, Quinn Hughes might get blown out by huge hit next season, if the forecheckers are told about him taking all those blind turns when being pursued. (For example, if someone is chasing him, he has the puck, he looks over his shoulder to his right, but turns blindly to the left. He does it so much someone will make him pay for it, someday)

I'm sure others have gone over this but it was the players who were injured that were the problem.

The analysis I've seen done rated the Leafs as having lost 10.18 points due to injuries which was 7th worst in the league. While not catastrophic, it was certainly a change from the relative healthy squads of past years and when combined with an absolutely devastating collapse in 5v5 team save% (from 7th in the league to 27th), it had the effect of pulling down one of the better teams this city has seen in recent times in front of the goalie (under Keefe anyways)

Sorry, should have been more clear on the fundamentals part.

Tampa had the second best xGF% in the league this year and was the only team in the top 3 to back that up with elite goaltending.

They were the obvious choice to win the cup from an analytics perspective.

Anything can happen in the playoffs though. They were also the choice the year before too (although they were pretty much the choice from any perspective). xGF% is a decent tool for seeing teams that dictate play. Teams that are high on the list are perennial playoff teams which is where I want this team to be every year. Its not a bad thing to look at really.

There are outliers of course (Montreal is one of them) but I think the Habs are going to rebound too....just like I think the Canucks are going to be a defensive tire fire as all indications are that they were being carried by goaltending for much of the season. I would trade places with either of them though, thats for sure. The Leafs are head and shoulders above both those "playoff" teams.

We know Anderson can be rock solid. We also know he lets in too many softies at critical times. Would I have liked to seen him traded - yes. But I don't know who was out there that would be considered an upgrade. So we hope we see the solid Freddy or maybe look at a deadline move.

He's better than Reimer or Bernier. I like Freddy, but wouldn't re-sign him unless it's cheap and the only good option.

95% of teams want to upgrade their less than perfect goalie. There's no way to do that besides getting lucky with a cast-off, or some stud rookie comes in and fools everyone for a season.

This is the key.

Takes time for a young team to overcome these types of defensive teams etc.

The BJ's were just a bad match for the Leafs. I was kinda ticked because we were more than likely facing Tampa and though I didn't necessarily like our chances vs either, at least Tampa would have been who we "should" have faced and also if we still lost, I wanted to see the Leafs vs Lightning, it would have been both a good test and perhaps just more enjoyable than watching another "Leafs vs Bruins". Not that Columbus is the Bruins, but I was looking forward to seeing the Leafs face a different style.

Whatever, Keefe is just fine even "dandy" lol. He needs a season or two more before I would even contemplate wanting a different coach.

It is quite clear, but you seem to be ignoring the words that are written there, very explicitly, by the NHL. It was not a playoff qualifying round. It was the "Cup qualifiers", which were part of the playoffs that came before the traditional "first round" this year. 24 teams participated in this year's playoffs. It is also recorded as a continuation of playoff streaks in the records. Again, you have zero authority to overrule the NHL. They decide. They decided it's the playoffs. End of discussion.
what really matters is putting the season in context which means we actual were the team that hoisted the cup
Looking at critical context to get more accurate conclusions doesn't mean that "we were actually the team that hoisted the cup". Nobody has said anything close to that, other than you.
