Is it time to change the name of the trophies awarded?

Leave the names as is -- this is just wanting change for the sake of change. I would be open to adding an award for best defensive defenseman and make the Norris the best offensive defenseman.

How about we rename the awards after NHL'ers with funny names instead?

Vezina honors two great goalies => Quick-Tugnutt trophy
Lady Byng => Larry Playfair trophy
Mark Messier honors two players => Ruff-Bonk trophy
Bill Masterton => Bart Crashley trophy
Calder => Frank McCool trophy
Art Ross honors two players => The Tootoo-Cheechoo trophy

Of the people that are adamantly opposed to name changes, I'm kinda curious how many know that it used to be called the Campell and Wales conferences with the Norris, Smythe, Adams and Patrick divisions.

I'm not saying all the trophies need to change necessarily, but it's not like it hasn't already happened in the league.

I liked the old division names because you didn’t have to come up with absurd geographic descriptors that somehow have to include Florida with Ontario and Quebec.

The trophy names will change eventually. Probably not right now, but one day it'll happen when not enough people care about these old names.

The only award name that needs to change is the Norris. It should be named: Art Ross Part 2: This time for Defencemen
The leading scoring defenseman wins the Norris like a third of the time and it hasn’t been the case in the last 5 season. I don’t know how that narrative keeps getting repeated despite being factually inaccurate.

Conn Smyth was a patriot who fought in both world wars and was wounded in the second. He Looms large in the history of several teams in the early NHL. He didn’t care much for French-Canadians but their support of the war effort was pretty weak because France surrendered in 1940…
France is a foreign country and their fate had nothing to do with the French-Canadian support in both world wars. There’s no shared patriotism there.

Is (are) there any trophies, that are renamed for real?

The Pearson was renamed not too long ago. I don't remember anyone getting butthurt for that one, but I might be mistaken based on reading this thread.

They should just name the awards for the person who won it the year before. Then no one could complain about the names not "being relevent" anymore and it would fit in with the modern need to forget any real history in its context.

I'm not over the loss of the Patrick, Adams, Norris, Smythe division names and the Campbell and Wales conference names

So leave it be

Jeff Marek brought this up on todays episode of the Jeff Marek show and I agree with him. I think it’s time to rename some the awards. We have no awards named after Wayne, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Etc. Nearly all the awards are named after executives.

-Conn Smyth was a racist.

-Art Ross, despite being an innovator, had 1 point in the 3 nhl games played.

-James Norris was an owner of several organizations but it’s not like he ever played.

-The Hart trophy was donated by the Hart family, Cecil Hart was the coach of the Montreal Canadians.

-Ted Lindsay’s name being on a trophy is well deserved and I’d want that one to stay.

-Georges Vezina only played 88 NHL games.

-The Bill Masterton trophy is named after the only player to die in the NHL from on-ice related injury.

-Frank Calder was the first President of the NHL.

-Frank Selke was a successful GM.

-William Jennings was the president of the Rangers

-Maurice Rocket Richard is obviously an award who’s name shouldn’t change.

——————————————————————————
I’d like to see:
Conn Smyth: Jean Beliveau Award
Art Ross: Wayne Gretzky Award
Hart: Gordie Howe Award
Frank Selke: Patrice Bergeron Award
Calder: Teemu Selanne Award
Vezina: Vladislav Tretiak Award
Jennings: Dominick Hasek Award
Norris: Orr-Lidstrom Award

You want to rename stuff, but then say the Vezina should be named after Tretiak who played 0 NHL games, while Hasek gets the Jennings which is a team award, not a goalie award? Also you can't rename an award for a guy still playing in the league. Also, pretty sure that Bob Gainey was considered one of the best defensive forwards, so I doubt Bergeron would get it.

Don't disagree with a number of others, but these two are weird.

Wait till this guy hears about the Stanley cup…..

I’m on board with this idea though. Also maybe adding an assist award and call it the Wayne Gretzky award.

Add a Gretzky award for Assists and a Orr award for top scoring defensemen. Then call it a day.

Why stop there?

Why don’t we change the name of the Stanley Cup too?

In fact, forget about player names, we should give companies the chance to sponsor the trophies!

The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Cup!

The McDonalds MVP award!

The Tampax Tampons Most Amazing Defenseman award!

Think of the possibilities!

What about Lady Byng award.

If they change the names, I won't bother to learn the new ones. Hell, I'll still refer to them as the old names. Just leave it alone, it's fine as is.

That Tampax award is already being given to Quinn Hughes from all the physicality he brings to that Vancouver lineup.

To suggest that the Norris isn't primarily based on offense is disingenuous at best. Since 2000 it has gone to the first or second highest scorer 17 times. The only exceptions are 3rd, 5th, 5th, 9th and 12th. Pretty heavily skewed.....

Seriously if Vegas would give odds whereby I could pick what position (rather than a name) in scoring would yield the Norris winner I'd be filthy rich. Just pick 1 and 2.
