I don't think people hate the idea of him being in a role, they hate the idea of him leapfrogging the entire ladder and going straight to the top based on his very impressive, but largely irrelevant (in this context) skills as a player and captain.

If he wants to be a scout, start as AGM or something else relatively minor for someone like him and learn the ropes, climb the ladder, that's great. I'd bet very few people would complain or care much at all. I don't think he has any business being president, but I'd be downright happy if he wanted to start at a reasonable entry level for someone with his history with the hopes of climbing to a top job. But he shouldn't get to just cut the entire line and go from nothing to president of a huge business and franchise without putting it any time at a lower level. Nobody should.

Right- again, i agree that this role is not where he should start( although I'd be happy to have him.) My main issue is the lack of respect Messier gets around these parts. Possibly it's from younger fans who only know what he did by watching highlight films but for anyone who lived through 1994 and shows this guy zero respect I just don't understand.

Again, he does not need to get this job for the organization to show him respect but everytime I read these boards I reminded that there are a lot of frustrated amatuer experts on everything who wish they actually had a say in these decisions. I'm just a fan who shows respect for the players.

I think Yzerman could be good for Gorton. He’s the type of guy who can constantly challenge him intellectually and be on his level in terms of knowledge (if not superior in that aspect).

I do worry about him getting pissy and going over Gorton’s head, though, potentially. I know people think Yzerman is a genius, and he may very well be, but he definitely seems to be very arrogant/smug.

I mean this in a genuinely curious way, what indicates that he's some intellectual heavyweight?

TB did well under his watch for sure, but how much was scouting as opposed to his decisions (though of course he could hire/fire scouts, and have to decide when to trust them or not)? For example though, things a GM would have more ownership of, like UFA signings, weren't so great. That Callahan deal was hilariously terrible and it wasn't hard to tell the second it was signed for example. It ended up not being a problem because all their stars took hometown discounts potentially due to a huge tax advantage, but it was a plainly dumb move.

My initial reaction was Yesss!!!!! A superstar Top executive but then maybe JD is a better fit?
I don't recall did JD and Dolan have an acrimony between themselves?

So if Tampa flames out again in this post season, is Yzerman still a genius or does the conversation finally start focusing on the difference between building a great regular season and a championship team?
It’s a fair question, but all you can really do is build the best team possible - and I’d say Yzerman did a very good job of that in Tampa. We’re talking about a team that has been to game 7 of the conference finals twice, and the finals once, in a span of 4 seasons. It sucks that they haven’t won YET, but to say they’re simply a “great regular season team” is talking them down a bit, IMO. They’ve been deep, and are VERY close to breaking through.

It wasn’t that long ago that Yzerman as a player was questioned the same way. He wasn’t a “great leader”, he was a guy who could never win the big one. Let’s not forget that the 1996 Red Wings, captained by Yzerman, won 62 games only to lose to Colorado in the conference finals.

And yet, they kept at it, and won back to back cups after that.

So, while I understand your skepticism, I think Yzerman deserves credit for building an elite team that can contend year in, and year out - even if they haven’t won the big one yet.

Yzerman is known for being stingy and worked well in a market where the taxes were favorable

He also handed out his fair share of horrendous contracts

I want someone who’s as least intrusive as possible. Yzerman ain’t that

I’ll take both. Thanks.

JD = Senior President
Iron Man = GM & Junior President
Messier = Assistsnt GM & Vice President
Gorton = See ya.

Sather was just on the Michael Kay show. I had it muted but Michael Kay is wearing a cow saddle

Glen Sather is on ESPN radio with Michael Kay. Sather is preaching patience with the rebuild. He said you build through the draft. He really likes Gorton. I don’t see him bringing in someone to usurp Gorton’s authority on building the team with his vision. He said this draft has 6 or 7 players they really like. They will get an opportunity to get one of them. Sather is not stepping away from the team.

It's funny, when it's our team, no one ever talks about doing a good job but falling short, or the number of runs we made. We certainly don't consider that person a genius. But when we look over the fence...there we are.

As for Yzerman as a player, you actually hit on exactly why I am not a huge fan. I still don't consider him a great leader. I consider him a guy who floundered for 13 years before Detroit literally surrounded him with an entire wing of the Hall of Fame. Certainly he was a key contributor to that and is a great player. But the whole aura of him "leading" that team or being a "great" leader?

Nope, never bought into it.
