Kings Article: Is Andrej Sekera worth It?

Wait, so a 5 year contract for Sekera is regrettable, but a six year contract for Martinez who is one year younger and a lesser player isn't? Sign Sekera, trade Martinez.

I didn't say A-Marts contract was a good one, its looking like Lombardi regrets that one as well.

A-Mart needs to take a big step forward next season, if he is kept.

You can read Lombardi's mind? Why would he regret Martinez' contract, for which he extended just six months ago? What in hell did he do (or not do) in those six months that would make Lombardi regret the extension?

You are talking out of your ass.

The way I see it, we basically have two realistic options.

1) We keep Sekera, going with a relatively sure thing even though it might be more expensive than we'd like.

2) We let Sekera go, and take our chances with the Voynov situation and bringing up young D-men.

There are two more options there:

3) Sign another UFA D-man or trade for one, but the list of UFA D-men is thin and I don't see anyone better to Sekera price/skill wise.

4) Trade for a 2nd pairing D-man from another team, but I don't see us getting an equal return on value compared to what we'd have to give up.

#3 and #4 aren't good options to seriously consider, imo. We have so many unknowns going on right now, it'd be nice to have a key decision taken care of so we can move forward and work on the other team challenges. I say, unless another team gives us a gift, resign Sekera, even if it costs up to $5.5 per.

Brown / Kopitar / Gaborik
Toffoli / Carter / Pearson
King / Shore / Lewis
Clifford / Weal / Nolan

Muzzin / Doughty
Sekera / Voynov
Martinez / Greene

Quick
Jones

What's the problem? We aren't going to resign Williams, Stoll is gone, Andreoff gets sent down, Weal gets his chance. What's the problem?

That should be the line up next season, imo. I don't care how small Weal is, he's earned his shot and I think he'll do fine. The only question's are Voynov's slot and what to do with Richards. If we don't resign Sekera we have a pretty big hole to fill.

I can read Lombardi's mind... let me concentrate here....

Hearing that Lombardi thinks Sekera is worth a 1st round pick and a prospect (2nd round pick)

Now I'm hearing that Lombardi thinks Sekera is asking for a "reasonable" (recent mayor's piece) amount...

Sign Sekera then deal with the Voynov situation if/when he comes back. It may mean trading someone. Waiting until the Voynov situation is resolved to deal with the situation isn't really an option.

The only way that works is a trade involving Richards retaining no salary, or retain some and get a deep discount from Sekara (not likely). Also have to remember, 3 guys are left off the roster(Andreoff and McNabb are likely two of them), they run at 23, not 20, so that's another $2M at least to account for.

I completely agree. Voynov is an unknown and until that changes he is as close to impossible to deal with as a player can be. Move on and deal him if/when he comes back. If/when he comes back he could (I imagine) be part of a package in moving Richards if needs be or to bring back a pick/player, who knows at this point but the fact that DL gave up a solid solid prospect in McQ and a 1st round pick he had long term plans in place already or at least it is easy to think so.

man with all these long term contracts that DL hands out, you can clearly see that he really falls in love with his players

it's a flaw for sure, but i can't really fault him for that, it's tough to remain 100% rational when your team was pretty close to perfection in the '12 & '14 runs

The context of when the signing happened needs to be taken into account, too. Slava had already been suspended and for how long, nobody knew. Also, there was uncertainty about McNabb to some extent. Sekera wasn't dealt for until much later in the season. I get why DL did it. It provided some roster certainty for next season. That being said, if DL decides to move him, I highly doubt it will be difficult and he'll certainly get something of value back.

It's clearly not that Lombardi "falls in love with his players."

It's a function of the free agent market. If he doesn't offer a long-term contract (or extension), the player leaves when his contract is up and he gets the long-term contract elsewhere.

There are 30 teams in this league, not 6 as NBC and Sportsnet would have you believe. The player has 29 other options.

chain - that team you have is already at 64.1m cap hit - plus you have to add the salaries of Sekera, Toffolli , Weal , Shore, Jones and 1-2 others - so you are like at 76-77m cap hit.
that (say 76m) hit includes Richards, but even a buy out leaves salary

I think more realistic is a buy out/trade of Richards and we only have one of Sekera or Voynov (replacement a 1m player) - so a few holes in the team

No no no no not $76 million. For christ's sake.

I will go over the numbers sometime today or tomorrow, but more realistically we are looking close to $72 million, and if the cap is at $71 or so, it's close to doable.

It's well known Ron has an affinity for the "Original 6". :sarcasm:

Your spot on regarding free agency. If player "x" doesn't get the term/money he is seeking here, he is sure to get it somewhere else. Happens all the time.

That second pairing of Sekera and McNabb was good, and that is perfect mentor for McNabb and they played a bit together in Buffalo.

Doughty-Muzzin
Sekera-McNabb
Greene-Martinez

I have a feeling Lombardi is sick of all this drama with Stoll and Voynov and will let Stoll walk and if Slava comes back, I think he is gone too.

Ron brings it everyday.

I can't quite make the numbers work.

I will post a spreadsheet image tomorrow...it will have to contain a couple of assumptions...the big one being:

Can we trade Richards taking back 50% of his salary? We might just get under a $71.5 MM Cap that way.
Damn Lombardi should have pulled the string last summer, but truth be told I thought he made the right decision at the time. No one has a crystal ball. Damn it.

Kind of small. Will try to make it bigger.

(I know, I know. Anatomy jokes coming.)

If DL can trade Richards we should all kick in a few bucks and get him a Nobel prize

Looks like HFBoards has an upper limit on file size. It's contracting my image.
