Kings Article: Is Andrej Sekera worth It?

Agree, we are going to shorten DD's career this way. That can't happen again this season.

You aren't reading what I'm writing, or else you are missing my point.

I 100% agree with everything you have written here. Always have. What I am saying is that the $ figure we put next to his name on a contract is not going to fluctuate based on what we traded to get him. Dean lombardi is NOT going to offer him more money because we gave up a 1st and McKeown to get him. He's going to offer what he feels is fair in conjunction with what the Kings can afford and quite probably in relation to what others on the Kings are getting.
I agree completely and I get it!

Seems Boston and LA both have similar problems....both up against the cap, both need a solid 2nd pair defensemen but in order to do so will have to say goodbye to someone they don't want to lose.

Didn't he have 2 concussion this last year?

If the Kings don't bring Sekera back they need to bring someone in... gambling that Voynov makes it back isn't a good option and one that will be sorted out after most of the good UFA's are gone.

That didn't scare him off of Mitchell, DL doesn't mind taking the odd calculated risk.

I'd rather pay Sekera slightly more than gamble on Ehrhoff. Was honestly not impressed by him last season - although some of that could have been his usage, but still. Expected a lot more.

Penguins defense was pretty solid last year. Mainly in part to MAF. They would have been a top 5 unit if they didn't battle so many injuries.

Strange (non-normal) hockey injuries too....

In the Kings case I think there's a contract or 2 they'd like to get rid of, but may be stuck with. :)

nope LA just needs to find a way to say goodbye to Richards and get some sort of resolution in the voynov case.

I was hopinh the kings would get Ehrhoff to replace Mitchell for less $$, was bummed when he signed in Pittsburgh. Turned out to be a blessing. he had a crap year.

Richards is gonna get bought out. I just don't see how anyone is willing to trade for him at this point in time. Me thinks we need to just cut the cord.
VV will probably have his contract voided. If he doesn't he'll get traded. I don't see him in a LA uni after listening to DLs interview last week.

Maybe. I'm sure you remember Ray Bourque playing 25-30 minutes a night for two decades and the guy decided to hang em up at 40 after a 59 point season and a run to a Stanley Cup. Some guys can just play forever.

They're also very familiar with Ehrhoff.

Difference is Mitchell wasn't playing like hot ass. May as well play Martinez there if you're going to sign Ehrhoff.

Ehrhoff had his best years in the West. Maybe he's not suited for the east and his style would fit in great here?

again - I think given a different set of circumstances he may be a good fit, but this upcoming season is not an especially ripe time to gamble on unknowns, we are already going to be seeing way more roster changes than in the past couple years combined.

As we should. The level of roster change in the past three years is almost unheard of in the NHL. We're overdue for a change, I don't think we should limit ourselves at all outside of core players. Change away.

it only looked that way because doughty was out there for literally half the game

really need a solid guy on second pairing to eat up minutes or doughty will be burned out by ****in january

Yup, just look at Chicago's short D bench, they look awful against a real team like TB. Making the Final and losing is the same as losing in the first round to us.

Well, I would never count out Chicago, but to address what you claim:

To me, losing in the SCF is the same as playing like **** during the regular season. A loser is a loser, and 29 teams every year lose.

Have to tell you, losing the SCF in 1993 as a fan was a pretty ****** feeling. I couldn't even feel pride that the Kings went that far, because I knew that group wasn't going to return to the SCF anytime soon. And watching Gretzky in the postgame saying he was considering retiring and crying the way he did clearly shows that losing the SCF is pretty devastating for the players.

Sorry, but I'd rather my team make the cup finals and lose than be a 1st round ouster. I'd rather think of my club as the 2nd best team in the game than an also-ran.

Jerry West said it best when Boston finally lost in the ECF in 1967 to the Philadelphia 76ers. He said the Celtics were just a bunch of losers, like the Lakers, like all of the other teams that season.

That's the way athletes look at it. They don't trumpet themselves as "second best" team. You think the Kings would? **** no they wouldn't.

I'm sure glad you are not in Kings management. I don't give a **** which player(s) in the past played for 60 ****ing minutes a night, I sure wouldn't want to waste the valuable commodity that Doughty is in that manner. Do you really want to take that chance?

Crazy.

this is exactly why I would MUCH rather us solidify our blueline instead of running a bottom 4 of Martinez/McNabb/Forbort/Greene. Scrounging for a veteran 3C over paying a guy like Sekera isn't going to do us any favors.

and yes - a year in year out contending team mentality is that it's championship or bust. There is no "happy to make the playoffs" or "we made it to the finals" - you simply won't see that with premier franchises. Look at a team like the Patriots for example, or the Yankees (ok, maybe less now than 10 years ago, but the point stands).

I'm in this camp. I'm a fan, not a player - I don't need a mental edge to watch the game.

That said, even when I played sports as a kid - you want to win all you can, but when something is out of reach, you win what is within reach. If you aren't making the playoffs, you don't just collapse and stop trying to win - 4th place is better than 5th, which is better than 6th. You're always looking to move up the ladder even if you're not going to be the champ.
