Quoting this post from the main board thread on Doug Maclean's book:
I hadn't heard that bit before that Fedorov said Zherdev was hopeless. That was still only in Zherdev's second season. It would have been nice to trade him then and spare us the headache and declining trade value of the following couple years. Though Tyutin was a really good player.
I finished the book and enjoyed it. I thought the first half was pretty dry but the last half was more of what I was looking forward to with behind the scenes draft stories.
The chapter on Nikolai Zherdev was fun. Some hilites:
- McLean personally wanted Staal or Horton, knew it was unlikely at #4
- His head scout and Russian scout really wanted Zherdev
- Zherdev came across cocky in the interview, said he wouldn't be there #4 for them to take.
- It was Zherdev or Vanek for them and Buffalo would have taken Zherdev next if Columbus didn't
- After Zherdev's first season, McLean got a call from Nationwide Insurance who was operating the condo Zherdev was living in by the rink and they asked McLean to go inspect it. There were wine stains all over the place and Zherdev broke the lock seven times
- McLean heard some rumblings and was now very worried. Zherdev's second season was wiped out by the lockout, he went back to Russia and came back with a 35 year old girlfriend
- McLean then hired a private investigator to follow him to see what was going on! No surprise, he was partying hard
- He traded for Fedorov to try to mentor him, after a few weeks Fedorov said it was hopeless
- Thought he had a deal straight up with Dallas for Brenden Morrow but the Stars got a long-term extension done with Morrow instead
