Agreed, if you could have foreseen what Brule became you would either be the best hockey mind in the world or a time traveler.

That said, nobody should be mistaken for thinking MacLean was even decent as a GM. He was bad and being in charge of a brand new expansion team (starting from scratch, no inherited roster or staff like relocation teams get) makes the situation worse.

As for Howson, I've said it before and I'll say it again. In order to prosper in the NHL as a GM, you either have to be good or lucky. Howson was mediocre and unlucky.

And me on the boards ranting about how bad his timing with the hit was. :sarcasm:

I would never confuse Doug MacLean with a good GM ... not in any realm of possibility. ;)

To be a great GM, you need to be both. To be a good GM, you need either a heavy dosage of one and less of the other, or a decent amount of both.

Sam Pollock is generally regarded as the best ever, but even he needed a good deal of luck (mainly when it came to getting others to accept his trade ideas). Figuring that the expansion 6 had little talent and little hope of doing anything, then fleecing them accordingly, is an obvious combination of the two.

When Denis Potvin was the top prospect in the 1973 draft, Pollock approached Bill Torrey (Islanders GM) about picking up the #1 overall pick. The deals from Pollock kept getting better and better, and the Islanders were going to take Pollock's best deal. Finally, Torrey realized the morning of the draft that if Sam Pollock was willing to trade that much for #1, then he (Torrey) had the chance at getting a true franchise player who could be built around. The deal was rejected, Potvin was drafted by the Islanders, and he ended up being a first-ballot HOFer and the backbone of a dynasty that won 19 straight playoff series.

Sometimes, the best deals are the ones you never make (7 draft picks for Ryan Murray? :naughty:)

Did you just compare Garth Snow to Sam Pollock?

Columbus scouting NJ/TB.

assuming everyone has seen that Jarmo and Chris Mac are at NJD/TBL game tonight...i'm sure nothing in it other than normal scouting, but still interesting...

Mods Edit:

per Erik Erlendsson, Lightning beat writer
Among 12 scheduled scouts at tonight's game are Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen and AGM Chris MacFarland as well as Toronto AGM Claude Loiselle

Considering we don't play either team until December, I'd say it's intriguing.

It is interesting for us, because both teams need defensemen. I would venture a guess that the Lightning would be the team more in need of a move for now - they are building for this year. Certainly some possibilities to be moved out of their forward ranks. For the Devils, I would think that draft picks would be more intriguing to them right now - and with our cap/contract situation, I think a trade with them would be more of a stretch.

devils are trying to move a defenseman to free up a spot...they have probably lesser dmen than us, but have no spot for one..perhaps too many 1 way contracts

Differences between Garth Snow and Sam Pollock:

Snow was born in the United States, Pollock in Canada.
Snow was named GM almost immediately after retiring, Pollock had over a dozen years in a front office before being elevated to that position.
Snow played in the NHL, Pollock did not.
Snow was a goalie, Pollock was not.
Snow is alive, Pollock is not.

Also, no, I didn't.

Must be trying to swing a 3-for-1 trade, allowing us more breathing room with the 50-contract limit so we can all sleep at night again...

No clue.... but I like the progressive actions.... JD is my hero, I would buy him dinner at "The Top".... and enjoy paying the bill...

Look it up.... Columbus and it's future was decided at "The Top"....

Aaron Portzline ‏@Aportzline 7m
#CBJ RW Nathan Horton has an MRI scheduled early next week to determine how fused bones in shoulder have healed following summer surgery.

Aaron Portzline ‏@Aportzline 6m
That doctor's appointment will go a long way in determining a timetable for Horton's debut with #CBJ. Club has avoided setting one so far.

Tampa Bay appears to need defensemen. Swapping Nikitin for one of their forwards makes a lot of sense. No idea who they'd be willing to give up though.

A couple of people in the main trade thread have mentioned Teddy Purcell. Purcell makes sense. He's 28 and has more scoring threat than Umberger, he would be a nice addition to our top nine. It would probably have to be a 2 for 1 trade. Nikitin is expendable and at some point we're going to have to move a forward either to the minors or trade.

When Horton comes back, it's going to be like we made a trade. Maybe something like this...

Atkinson-Anisimov-Gaborik
Foligno-Johansen-Horton
Umberger-Dubinsky-Purcell
Jenner-MacKenzie-Calvert
Boll, Comeau

God I love speculating. Likely there is nothing to this situation.

i could see like Nikitin and Dmac or Letestu to reduce out glut of bottom 6 centers and to make the dollars work...would give them a solid 2nd pairing dman and an energy guy in their bottom 6...

I forgot about Letestu. He's easy to forget sometimes, but he's on a long term deal, so I would guess that MacKenzie would be a candidate for odd man out. It would be unfortunate, I really like MacKenzie's grit and energy. Who else might be a candidate? I guess you could add Comeau to that list.

Orrrrrrr maybe it's because the team had 5 days off and they wanted to lay eyes on a team that they aren't gonna see for a while.

Not trying to be snarky just playing Devil's advocate here

if it were NYR or OTT, sure...we play them next week...not in a month and a half...as I said and was said by others, probably nothing much to this, but doesn't make much sense as to why Jarmo and ChrisMac were there...
