Hello Jukka,

Yes, I do have some of the exhibition results and goal scorers from Canada and the U.S. team's past World Championship tours, mostly from the 1930's and 1950's. The only problem is that some of these exhibition tours were rather lengthy (anywhere from 1 month to 4 months in duration involving from 20 to 70 games played). And sometimes not all the scoring details were published from the exhibition games. Plus it takes a lot of research time digging in the newspaper archives to find all of the games, so I haven't as yet begun to look back into these pre-WC tours. Hopefully in the near future I will begin working on this.

As for the 1962 Galt Terriers, since the WC was going to be played in Colorado, did not schedule any exhibition games with European opponents but instead embarked on a cross-Canada exhibition tour facing other Canadian clubs. Galt finished their 34-game Ontario Hockey Association Senior A schedule in first place with 24 wins and 10 losses, one point ahead of Windsor in the 8-team OHA Senior A league. The Terriers were led in scoring by Don Rope (19 + 25 = 44 points) and Bob McKnight (18 + 26 = 44 points). More importantly, Galt was led by their masked goaltender, Harold (Boat) Hurley. Hurley was the only goalie in the OHA Senior A to play in all 34 games, allowing 102 goals, posting 2 shutouts and a league-best 3.00 goals against average. Alex Keeling was the penalty leader for Galt, collecting 68 penalty minutes.

Galt began their '62 pre-WC tour in the Maritimes with 3 warmup outings. The first game being played February 1 in Halifax, an easy 8-1 win over the Halifax Wolverines of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League. Former NHL star Tod Sloan paced Galt with 1 goal and 4 assists. Also scoring for Galt: Bobby Brown (2 goals),
and single goals from Alex Keeling, Pete Kowalchuk, Joe Hogan, Jackie McLeod and Bob Mader. Halifax scored their only goal at 19:01 of the 3rd period. Galt blasted Halifax goalie Dogget with 48 shots, while "Boat" Hurley had an easy time for Galt kicking out 18 Wolves shots.

The next game was Feb. 2 in Moncton, where the Terriers nipped the Moncton Beavers of the NSSHL, 7-6, before 1,650 fans. Scoring for Galt was Ted Maki (2 goals and 1 assist), Bob Mader (1 goal and 1 assist), Pete Kowalchuk (1 goal), Bob Brown (1 goal), Tod Sloan (1 goal), Harry Neale (1 goal), Joe Hogan (2 assists), Bill Mitchell (2 assists), and Jackie McLeod (2 assists). I have the line-ups, goals and penalties for this game if you want it, Jukka.

The third match was held Saturday, Feb. 3 in Amherst, as Galt swept the tour with a 7-0 win over league-leading Amherst Ramblers of the NSSHL. The Ramblers suffered because of weak goaltending, a problem all season for the defending Maritime champs. Emery (The Cat) Cormier gave up 4 goals in the 1st period and was replaced for the 2nd and 3rd by Paul Morisette who allowed 3 Galt goals, all in the 2nd period.

Next game was Tuesday, Feb. 6 in Toronto at Varsity Arena, as Galt scored 7 unanswered goals in the last 40 minutes of play to defeat the University of Toronto Blues, 10-2. Galt scorers were Bob McKnight (2 goals), Pete Kowalchuk (2 goals), Lloyd Mercer (2 goals), Tod Sloan (1 goal, 3 assists), Jackie McLeod (1 goals), Bob Mader (1 goal), Don Rope (1 goal). Toronto goals by Bill Kennedy and Jim Murchie.
Attendance was 2,026. I also have this full game summary, if you should need it.

The fifth game was Feb. 7 in Wallaceburg, Ontario, as the Chatham Maroons scored an 8-4 victory over Galt before 670 fans. Chatham goals were from Jim Connelly (3), George Aftken (2), Ernie Dick (1), Dave Luciuk (1), and Bob Pole (1). Galt goals were scored by Tod Sloan (2), Joe Malo (1), and Pete Kowalchuk (1).

The Terriers played a couple more games in eastern Canada before departing by train for the western Canadian part of their exhibition tour. Starting Feb. 14 in Fort William, the Port Arthur Bearcats of the Thunder Bay Senior Hockey League handed Galt a 3-0 defeat. Gerry Watson, Gary Olney and Wally Maxwell scored for Port Arthur, all 3 goals scored in the 2nd period. The 2,400 fans watched Bearcat goalie Bob Kilgour block 34 Terrier shots.

On Feb. 15 in Fort Frances, Galt Terriers handed an 8-2 loss to Fort Frances Canadians of the Ontario-Minnesota Intermediate League before 850 fans. Jackie McLeod (2), Bill Wylie (2), Joe Malo (2), Joe Hogan (1), and Bobby Mader (1) were the goal scorers for Galt. Fort Frances goals by Ike Eisenzoph and Ron King, both in the 2nd period.

Feb. 17 in Warroad, Minnesota, Galt defeated Warroad Lakers of the OMIHL, 7-4.
Galt goals: Bob McKnight (2), Tod Sloan (1), Jack McLeod (1), Don Rope (1), Bob Mader (1) and Bob Brown (1).
Warroad goals: Roger Christian (3), Ron Shalley (1).
Galt goalie Harold Hurley with 33 saves. Attendance: 1,200.
Jukka, I also have the full game summary for this match.

Feb. 18 in Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Maroons beat Galt 7-4 before 4,462 fans.
Winnipeg goals: Ross Parke (3), Fred Dunsmore (2), Tom Rendall (1), Tom Marshall (1). Galt goals: Joe Malo (1), Tod Sloan (1), Bill Wylie (1), Bob Brown (1).
I have the complete summary for this game.

Feb. 19 in Moose Jaw, the Moose Jaw Pla-Mors of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League defeated Galt 4-3 before 2,000 fans. Moose Jaw goals: George Senick, Glen Smith, Bob Serviss and Ken Jestin. Galt goals: Bobby Mader, Joe Hogan and Jackie McLeod. I also have the full game summary, if you need it.

Feb. 21 in Saskatoon, Bobby Brown's goal with 24 seconds left gave Galt a 3-3 tie with Saskatoon Quakers before 3,728 fans.
Galt goals: Joe Hogan (2), Bob Brown (1) and Bob Mader with 3 assists.
Saskatoon goals: Sid Puddicombe (2), Byron McCrimmon (1).

Feb. 22 in Calgary, Galt outscored Calgary Adderson 10-5, before 1,469 fans.

Feb. 25 in Edmonton, Galt defeated University of Alberta Golden Bears 14-0 before 300 fans. Galt goals: Bob Brown (3), Don Rope (3), Joe Malo (2), Bob McKnight (2),
Tod Sloan (2), Bob Mader (1), Jackie McLeod (1).

Feb. 27 in Trail, British Columbia, Galt beat Trail Smoke Eaters, 3-1.
Galt goals: Jackie McLeod (2), Butch Martin (1).
Trail goal: Gerry Penner.

March 4 in Colorado Springs, Galt defeated Colorado College of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 11-1, before 900 fans. Jackie McLeod and Joe Malo, on the same line, each scored 3 goals, while Don Rope added 2 goals.
Galt goalie John Sofiak had to make only 19 saves, while Colorado Tigers goalie Art Warwick (a sophomore) turned back 33 Galt shots.

All right, Jukka, this is what I have found so far on the 1962 Galt Terriers exhibition schedule. If you would like the full and complete game summaries from some of these games, just let me know and I will post here. I will continue looking for the 1956 and 1960 exhibition tour games as well.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Yes, I know, that ever since the Toronto CCM, Team Canada of 1930, the teams used to play 60-70 games in an exhibition tour. Except Winnipeg HC (1932), which according to my information made a small tour before the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

All right, these stats of the Galt Terriers will do very fine at the moment. So I am very grateful.

When you will get some info on the 1956 and 1960 exhibition tour, let me know!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

The 1956 Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen (Dutchies) pre-Olympic exhibition tour games was an easy one to find since they played just 3 exhibition games before the Olympics and 3 games after the Olympics.

They took a 3-week break from their OHA Senior A schedule, playing their last game Saturday night, January 14, 1956, beating the Windsor Bulldogs 5-2, before their hometown standing-room-only crowd of 7,200. And it was also just their second win in the past 8 games. With only a few hours sleep, the Dutchmen were up shortly before dawn Sunday morning (January 15) to depart by plane from Toronto's Malton Airport enroute to Scotland for an exhibition game in Paisley Monday night (Jan. 16).

16 January 1956 (at Paisley, Scotland)
K-W 6:5 Paisley Pirates (2:3, 3:2, 1:0)

The K-W team fly home to Canada after the 9 February game. And that is all of the K-W exhibition games from 1956, Jukka. Hope this helps.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thank you very much! You know, to have full stats of exhibition games is very rare. The only one I have found so far, is the stats of the Trail Smoke Eaters tour of 1938-1939. Even that one only includes game results. When finding exhibition game results of this 1956 team seemed to be very difficult to find, I got a hunch, that they didn't play the usual 60-70 games round!
All right, let me know, when K-W Dutchmen 1960 team's exhibition game stats will appear. Winnipeg HC 1932 is probably a difficult one, but if you find something, I'd like to read about their exhibition games as well!

All the best

Hello Jukka,

Armed with the good wishes of all Canadians, the Winnipegs (Winnipeg Hockey Club), Canada's Olympic hockey team, left Winnipeg's Canadian National train depot January 26, 1932 aboard the "Continental Limited" and set out for Lake Placid, New York in quest of the 1932 Olympic and amateur world hockey championship. In addition to the 15 players, the Olympic party included coach Jack Hughes, 2 trainers and 7 officials of the Winnipeg club. The Winnipegs did not travel directly to Lake Placid, but headed for eastern Canada where they would play two exhibition games.

About 6,000 fans greeted the Winnipegs in their first exhibition game at Maple Leaf Gardens January 29, when they played against the Nationals (Sea Fleas) and Marlboros, Toronto's O.H.A. senior representatives. The Nationals (Sea Fleas) faced the Winnipegs for the first 30 minutes (which included the 1st period and 10 minutes of the 2nd period), and then the Marlboros played the last 10 minutes of the 2nd period and the entire 3rd period.

The Winnipegs then headed off for the third Winter Olympic games, where because of unprecedented economic conditions all over the world caused by the Great Depression, only 4 countries entered the Oympic hockey competition (Poland, Germany, Canada and the U.S.). Each team played the other twice, so that there were 12 games on the official Olympic program. Because of the limited entry list, the International Olympic Committee gave permission for enough exhibition contests to be staged to complete the minimum schedule of 18 games. There were 5 games in this exhibition series, participated in by the 4 Olympic teams and the following non-Olympic teams: McGill University of Canada and the Lake Placid Athletic Club.
Two games, originally scheduled to be played between Lake Placid AC-Canada and Lake Placid AC-USA, were instead replaced by one game between a team made up of players from the Canadian and United States Olympic teams against the Lake Placid AC. As a result of this the complete hockey schedule consisted of 17 games.

Allright, Jukka, there's the exhibition results (10 games) of the 1932 Winnipeg Hockey Club. Hope this helps your files.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Great, thank you very much!

I thought the Winnipeg HC exhibition games hard to be found! The only thing about them I had found so far, was an announcement about a small tour.

All right, if you find something about the exhibition games of K-W Dutchmen of 1960, hopefully you will give me a post!

I am still looking for any piece of info of Poland 1974. Whenever I will find something, I'll let you know!

All the best
Jukka

The Canadian senior hockey champions of 1959 was the Whitby Dunlops, who declined the invitation to represent Canada at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California, which then paved the way for the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen to appear in their second successive Olympics.

The K-W Dutchies had a record of 23 wins, 23 losses, 2 ties in 48 games for a total of 54 points (K-W played 8 four-point games) when they finished the Jan. 29-30, 1960 weekend in the OHA Senior A league for the Olympic break. The Dutchmen left Kitchener on January 31 by train for a 7-game western Canada exhibition tour beginning in Fort William on February 2. The K-W team then flew to California from Vancouver after the exhibition tour and arrived in Squaw Valley February 12.

K-W Dutchmen, Canada's Olympic hockey representatives, opened the western exhibition tour February 2 against a Lakehead all-star team (composed of players from Port Arthur Bearcats and Fort William Beavers of the Thunder Bay Senior Hockey League and from Red Rock Royals of North Shore intermediate league).

The Dutchmen returned to Kitchener following the Olympics to resume their round-robin play in the OHA Senior A league. However, they did play an exhibition game against the Czechoslovakian national team on March 6 in Kitchener. The Czechoslovak national team played a 6-game tour of eastern Canada before returning to Czechoslovakia.

Here is the game account from that March 6 exhibition match:

Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen defeated the Czechoslovakian national team, 6-5, in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon in Kitchener before 2,684 patrons. It was the third successive loss for the Czechs in their 6-game tour of eastern Canada. They provided their best performance today in a see-saw game that saw the visitors take an early lead. The Dutchmen, who are playing in the Ontario Hockey Association Senior A round-robin with only 12 men after breaking up their Olympic squad, called on the Stratford Indians senior B team for a line, and on Chatham Maroons for a defenceman and a forward.

The old Billy Flick-Mickey Roth-Dinny Flanagan line, which played for the Dutchmen for many seasons, came back from Stratford and scored 2 goals. Gary Sharpe, a left-winger, and Jack Douglas, a defenceman, were also added from Chatham. One of the remaining dozen of the K-W squad was hurt when Bob Ertel was hit in the face with the puck from a point shot in the third period. Two of the Czechs were injured as well. Sub-goalie Josef Mikulas, who played well, was cut about the face in the second period. Josef Barta was cut on the head when he used his head to bank an angle shot by Frantisek Maslan for the fourth Czech goal.

The K-W goal scorers were: Bob Mader (2), Don Rope (1), Dinny Flanagan (1),
Bill Flick (1), Cliff Pennington (1).

The Czech goal scorers were: Jan Starsi (1), Miroslav Vlach (1), Josef Golonka (1),
Josef Barta (1), Josef Cerny (1).

An interesting story from March 1, 1960 following the K-W (Canada) loss to the United States team and settling for the silver medal at the Olympics (amid scathing criticism of the team from back home in Canada), had the K-W coach Bobby Bauer challenging the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL to a game with the Dutchmen under Olympic rules. He said his team would play the Leafs either in Toronto or Kitchener and all proceeds would go to charity. Bauer said: "The only condition I would want is that 2 referees with experience in international hockey handle the game. One of them should be Hughie Mclean, who was hailed as the finest referee ever to appear in the Olympics."

When Bauer was asked as to how the U.S. won the Olympic title from Canada, he responded: "It's time people woke up. The world is taking to our game and every year it will be a little tougher. As it was, we were only one goal away from winning the gold medal."

Now back in Toronto, Maple Leafs spokesman Harold Ballard laughed off the challenge from Bauer as a joke. Ballard commented: "They better win something
before they try to take on the Leafs. They messed up things pretty good down there at the Olympics. They better get some organization and co-operation in their own team before they challenge anybody. Plus I don't lnow why they're bothering with us. Why not play the Canadiens, they're in first place in our league."

Jukka, that is all from the 1960 K-W exhibition games. I have the complete game
summaries, but there is too much information for me to post here. If you should need them, please let me know and I can PM them to you.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

These summaries of the exhibition games will do very fine at the moment for me. So thank you tredemendously lot!

All right, thank you for all your information and when I will find something from 1974, I'll let you know!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Out of curiosity, may I ask you a question concerning your information gathering process for your website? By any chance, do you collect the game summaries (full boxscores with goals & assists, penalties, penalty times, etc.) from any of the past World Championships? And if so, how far back in years do you have?

The reason I ask is that at IHG forums there is a project to locate as many WC game summaries from as many tournaments as possible. I have all of the boxscores from the 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000-2006 WC's, plus most of the boxscores from the 1980's WC's. After that, it is rather hit and miss with mostly Canada and USA boxscores in my collection.

I noticed that on your website you have an excellent amount of statistical information and wondered whether it was obtained through various boxscores or various publications and newspapers. Thanks again for your help.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Unfortunately I only keep the best scorer stats of each medal team. Finnish stats are, of course, full. But most of the tournaments held in Finland have good information in the libraries here, concerning the other teams.

I have full summaries concerning all the medal winning teams between 1954-1969, Finnish summaries are full since right from the beginning in 1939. Before that I have about 6-7 tournament summaries concerning all the medal teams, mostly concerning goalscoring. Now I have at least one medal team with full scoring/goalscoring stats from every tournament. Because of the difficulties to get full summaries, I mostly mention only the best scorer/goalscorer. Outside the medal winning teams my information is unfortunately very limited.

With my website stats the info is obtained both from various boxscores and most of all from various publications and newspapers. Many of the articles can be found on the internet. The list is too long to remember or mention here, but I can give you a pm, if you want!

So, sorry, but I have concentrated mostly on medal teams and Finland. But I hope this helps to some degree!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Again, Svetovy Poharu!

I have been gathering the info for my website since 1996, so it is a bit difficult to talk about it, sorry!

Now, I have got ever more interested in this thing:

According to my sources: Winnipeg Falcons 1920, Winnipeg HC 1932, Ottawa RCAF Flyers 1948, Edmonton Mercurys 1950 and 1952, Lethbridge Maple Leafs 1951, Penticton Vees 1955, Whitby Dunlops 1958, Belleville McFarlands 1959 and Trail Smoke Eaters 1961 all got a Welcome home parade. Even Toronto CCM 1930 got a small civic reception at the Toronto town hall.

This is again probably a bit hard thing, sorry, but: did any other WC teams get this kind of jubilee back home?

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Thanks for the information. It is interesting to read how much effort you have devoted for researching the content on your website. Great job!

I am sorry that I cannot give you answers to the parade question regarding past Canadian world championship teams. I would assume most of the gold-medal winning Canadian senior amateur squads prior to 1963 more than likely received parade celebrations upon returning to their respective home towns. I have not as yet adequately researched the newspaper archives beyond the various Canadian and American team's post-WC tours. There is such a large volume of information from so many years to sift through the archives. Unfortunately, it is a mattter of time. Hopefully I will be able to process more data in the immediate future.

As always, Jukka, thank you again for your tremendous help. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

I have to say, that the main thing with my ten years collecting has been the WC and the Olympic tournaments! Besides that, I have collected many copies of photos of the medal winning countries national teams and some others as well. And I have lists about their national champions as well. Except for the USA, since their amateur championships have varied a lot.
In fact, besides that Swiss team scoring 1953 WC, the only real thing I'm missing are the goalscorers of the European Champions of the European Championship tournaments of 1910 and 1913, but they are probably beyond our reach.
Well, just to fill my stats, do you have any info about the goalscoring of GBR 1930?

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

The Great Britain team only played one game at the 1930 WC because of severe weather delays in Chamonix. The WC's were to have begin on January 27 using the pool system (adopted at the 1928 Olympic hockey championship) but there were unfavourable ice conditions at that time, resulting in play not beginning until January 31 and then the IIHF had to abandon the pool system in favour of the ordinary knock-out method. Germany defeated Great Britain 4-2, with GBR getting goals from WJ Home (unassisted) in the first period and RD Mulholland scored the other GBR goal (assisted by Eric Carruthers). Here's a brief recount of the game:

Great Britain played brilliantly in the first period, but weakened in the succeeding periods, when their captain, W. Home, sustained an injury to his ankle. This was particularly unfortunate, as there was only one substitute player available. Home was easily their outstanding player. Home opened the scoring and Mulholland obtained the second goal from a good pass by Carruthers. Sexton was excellent in general scoring attacks, but he frittered away opportunities by hanging on to the puck too long when his linemates were in good scoring position. Germany's last two goals came in the last few minutes of the game when the British goalie was blinded by the strong sunshine.

Great Britain did play an exhibition match the next day on February 1 at Chamonix against Canada (Toronto Canadas), losing to the Canadians 6-0. GBR, who could not ice a full team for this game, played with two borrowed Canadian players -- Watson and Hutchinson. Canada got goals from Park (2), Armstrong (2), Armstrong (1), Clayton Grant (1), and Adams (1). Speechley in the British nets gave a fine performance despite the decisive defeat.

As for the 1910 and 1913 European championships, I have the Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) goal scorers for the 1913 EC at Munich, Germany:

25.1.1913 -- Bohemia 4:4 Belgium (0:1, 4:3)
Bohemia goals: Jirkovsky (3), Palous

26.1.1913 -- Bohemia 4:2 Germany (2:2, 2:2)
Bohemia goals: Vindys (3), Jirkovsky

27.1.1913 -- Bohemia 7:0 Austria (2:0, 5:0)
Bohemia goals: Jirkovsky (2), J. Jarkovsky (2), Sroubek (2), Vindys

I have a lengthy story account of the 1910 European Championship at Les Avants from the Times of London but unfortunately does not mention individual goal scorers.
If you would like me to send you the article, please let me know and I will PM it to you. Allright, Jukka, hope this is helpful for your files.

Sorry Jukka, I had to fix a typo error. Correct version appears below:

Great Britain did play an exhibition match the next day on February 1 at Chamonix against Canada (who actually were the Toronto Canadas, who were sponsored by the C.C.M. sporting goods company). GBR lost to the Canadas 6-0 (2:0, 2:0, 2:0). GBR, who could not ice a full team for this game, played with two borrowed Canadian players -- Watson and Hutchinson. Canada got goals from Park (2), Armstrong (2), Clayton Grant (1), and Adams (1), with the goals evenly divided between the periods. Speechley in the British nets gave a fine performance despite the decisive defeat.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thanks for telling about the article about Les Avants 1910. But I already have two articles in my files, one in German and another in French.

I also have stats about the games of Bohemia 1913, but then it's time to compare your info with mine. Since the Champion of the tournament was Belgium, I'd like to have any kind of stats about their goalscoring.

Thank you very much for the game stats of GBR 1930. Now I know something about all their teams goalscoring between the First and the Second World War tournaments.

All the best
Jukka

Hello again Svetovy Poharu!

I've changed my mind with that article, so you can pm it to me.

Then, still something to ask about the WC tournaments:

Do you happen to have goalscoring stats about USA-Austria game of 1931?

I have a collection of small articles of the 1939 WC tournament, but could you tell about your Canadian and US goalscoring stats? This time just a list will do. Also: do you have any info about the goalscoring of Switzerland-USA 3-2 game? You know, I have Swiss statistics, and they tend to mark own goals in a soccer way with both 1931 and 1939.

All right, then just to fill my stats: any information of GBR goalscoring in WC pool B in 1966?

Thanks beforehand with all the available information.

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

This is all I know about the February 4, 1931 Austria-United States game in Krynica, Poland. U.S. goals: by Shefler (unassisted) and Elliott (assisted by Dagnino). Game account below:

The United States team from Boston defeated Austria by the smallest margin of 2 to 1 (1-0, 1-1, 0-0). The Austrian team played unexpectedly well toward the end of the game, while the Americans seemed to underestimate their opponents. The first goal of the U.S. was scored at 6:00 of the first period by Dwight Shefler in a mix-up with the Austrian goalie's assistance. The Austrians pressed hard, but their beautiful and precise long shots were successfully blocked by good work by U.S. goalie Ted Fraser. In the second period Ed Dagnino passed a fine diagonal shot which Robert Elliott sent into the Austrian net. The puck then traveled erratically over the rink until the 31:00 minute mark, when one of the Austrians' long shots passed the U.S. goalie Fraser into the American goal. All told, the Americans missed many opportunities to improve their score.

As for the Switzerland-U.S.A. 3:2 (0:2, 2:0, 1:0) game from February 8, 1939 at Basle, Switzerland. The U.S. goal scorers were: Allan Van and Art Bogue. Here is the game account:

The United States received its first setback in the world amateur championship, losing to Switzerland, 3-2. Two of Switzerland's goals were kicked into the net by American players, while the third Swiss goal was awarded by the referee because the goal net had been moved. The winning goal in this weird and strange match, played before 14,000 spectators, came at the 7:00 minute mark of the third period.
The Swiss forward, Charles Kessler, drove a long shot toward the American goal. At the same moment the goal net was bumped aside and, although the puck missed it,
the Polish referee Sachs, allowed the goal to count. The Americans, on the offensive from the start, scored twice in the first period. After George Quirk of Providence, R.I., had missed a good scoring chance, Allan Van of St. Paul, Minn., drove home the first goal in the 7th minute of play. Just 6 minutes later, Art Bogue of Detroit, Mich., made it 2-0 for the U.S. The first Swiss score came in the opening minute of the second period when Reto Delnon shot from the middle of the rink. However, the American defenceman Allan Van blocked the puck but accidentally kicked it into his own goal. Then 3 minutes later, American goalie Edward Maki of Marquette, Mich., blocked another long Swiss shot but he also inadvertently kicked the puck into his own net.

Jukka, I am missing the 1939 WC American goal scorers from their 4-0 win against Germany. Perhaps you might have these goal scorers? I have the USA goals from their other 8 games played.

USA-Italy 5:0
USA: Quirk (Bogue), Nicholson (Maley), Maley (unassisted), Van (unassisted), Nicholson (unassisted).

USA-Germany 4:0
USA: ?????????????????????????

USA-Finland 4:0
USA: Dondi (Maley), Bogue (unassisted), Quirk (Dondi), Maley (unassisted)

USA-Hungary 3:0
USA: Dondi (Nicholson), Bogue (Saari), Wagnild (unassisted)

Switzerland-USA 3:2
USA: Van, Bogue
SUI: C. Kessler, Delnon, ?????

USA-Poland 4:0
USA: Quirk (Nicholson), Quirk (unassisted), Bogue (Maley), Bogue (unassisted)

USA-Czechoslovakia 1:0
USA: Quirk (Nicholson, Van)

USA-Switzerland 2:1
USA: Quirk (unassisted), Quirk (unassisted)
SUI: Ruedi

Canada-USA 4:0
USA: no goals
CAN: Benoit (2), Dame, Morris

So Jukka, can you please post what goal scorers you have in comparison to the goals listed above? This way we can see if there are any discrepancies.

As for the 1939 Canada (Trail Smoke Eaters) goal scorers, I am still working on compiling the list. But this is what I know so far:

Dame -- 8 goals, 4 assists = 12 points
Benoit -- 6 goals, 3 assists = 9 points
McCreedy -- 4 goals, 3 assists = 7 points

I will post the Canada goal scorers as soon as I finish researching the archive files.
Hope this helps, Jukka.

All right, thanks for the US info and thank you very much for the Canada stats already now!

Hello Jukka,

I have unexpectedly encountered some missing goal scoring details for 1939 WC Canada (Trail Smoke Eaters). The Canadian newspapers did not print on Sundays and I am missing the CAN-CZE 4:0 game of February 11, 1939. Jukka, perhaps you might have this info? Also, by chance, do you have the game-by-game Swiss goal scorers? I would be very interested in seeing Switzerland's scoring totals.

Other than that, here are the Canadian goal scorers from the 1939 WC in Switzerland:

Canada-Netherlands 8:0
CAN: Morris (3), Kowcinak (2), Dame, Benoit, Cronie

Canada-Poland 4:0
CAN: McCreedy (2), Dame, Kowcinak

Canada-Great Britain 4:0
CAN: Brennan, Morris, Cronie, Snowden

Canada-Czechoslovakia 2:1
CAN: Benoit, Dame
CZE: Oldrich Hurych

Canada-Germany 9:0
CAN: Dame (2), Snowden, Cronie, McCreedy, Brennan, Benoit, Kowcinak, Morris

Canada-Switzerland 7:0
CAN: Dame (2), Cronie (2), Benoit, Snowden, Brennan

Canada-Czechoslovakia 4:0
CAN: McCreedy (1), ??????????????????????????????????????

Canada-USA 4:0
CAN: Benoit (2), Dame, Morris

As for the 1939 USA goal scorers, here are the totals:

Quirk -- 9
Bogue -- 6
Van -- 3
Dondi -- 2
Maley -- 2
Nicholson -- 2
Wagnild -- 1
Saari -- 0
Leaky -- 0

Jukka, I noticed your stats have Maley with 2 goals in the game against Italy. Maley only scored one goal (plus one assist) in that game. Nicholson scored 2 goals. I have the official scoring of the USA-Italy game:

First Period:
1. USA, Quirk (Bogue), 12:00
2. USA, Nicholson (Maley), 14:00
3. USA, Maley (unassisted), 18:00

Second Period:
4. USA, Van (unassisted), 2:00

Third Period:
5. USA, Nicholson (unassisted), 13:00

Thanks again for your help, Jukka. I believe we are making progress on some of these tournament stats.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

I was surfing on the internet for a while to find out about the Canada-Czechoslovakia 4-0 game. If I understood correctly a French website called "Hockey Archives", Joe Benoit was an "auter" of two goals in this game. But the NHL player search showed his stats in this 1939 tournament as 6+3.

So, if the French were right, his stats would be at least 8+3.

So, sorry, but this is all I have found!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

I received a message from Marc at hockeyarchives and he confirmed that Benoit scored 2 goals in Canada's 4:0 win over Czechoslovakia on February 11, 1939. However, he did not know the Canadian 4th goal scorer. Plus we already know that McCreedy scored 1 goal in that game as well. We are now just missing that one goal scorer.

Marc also said that Charles Kessler was credited with 2 goals in the Switzerland 3:2 win over USA on February 8, 1939, in addition to Delnon's credited goal.

Jukka, please check your PM. I sent you the 1910 European Championship article that you requested. Hope this helps. Best regards.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thank you a lot! This is great in exchanging information!

And thanks a lot for the article as well!

All right, when we find something to discuss, let's exchange the info!

All the best
Jukka
