The only stats a I have about 1953 Switzerland is, that Hans-Martin Trepp scored a goal against West Germany.
About West Germany I have that much stats, that Poitsch scored at least 5 goals.
And Markus Egen's total score was: 3+1 (0).

Vernon Thomas (assistant to the president of the A.H.A.) of Baltimore, Md., was the team's manager.
John Semple of Lynn, Mass. was the team's trainer.
Albert Yourkewicz, a defenceman, was listed as the team's back-up goalie, even though he never saw action as a goalie during the entire 43 games.
Dan Crowley, was listed as the utility position player.

Jukka, I will look further into my files to see if perhaps I can find the other statistics that you are missing. I have access to the Times of London archives and will try and locate the missing information on Great Britain's hockey teams at the 1924, 1935 and 1938 tournaments. Plus I will check into some other sources for the 1934 USA team stats, and the 1938 and 1949 Canada stats as well.

Regrettably, the Times of London archives is not producing the kind of results I was hoping for. Hockey coverage is very minimal and consists primarily of just line-ups with no mention of goal scorers. I will continue to look into other resources.

Jukka, may I ask if you have any player stats from the 1972 Sapporo Olympics?
I have been searching for quite some time for the 1972 Olympic player stats of Sweden, Finland, Poland, Norway, Japan, Switzerland and Yugoslavia with no success. I do have the stats for Soviet Union, USA, Czechoslovakia and West Germany but that is all I have for those '72 Olympics.

Also, do you have Finland player stats from the 1962 WC at Colorado Springs?
I have found a couple of errors in my Finland stats for that tournament. I am missing a couple of the goal scorers and penalty minute totals.

Thank you kindly Jukka for the stats. I do have the rosters of the 1972 Sapporo Olympic teams, just do not have the player stats. The 1972 Olympics is another of those tournaments that I have found great difficulty in finding boxscores and statistics about it.

Thanks for the '62 Finland WC numbers. I had Pentti Hyytiainen listed with 7 gp and 1 goal, 1 assist and that was the big mistake I found.

I will continue to search through my files for 1949 WC Canada totals. Only problem is that I am missing the boxscore from the 47-0 Canada victory over Denmark. The archives only list the goal scorers for that game (no assists or penalty minutes mentioned), so that is the problem I am facing with this. However, I do have the other Canada boxscores from the 1949 WC. So I will continue looking.

The 1924 Olympic games also present a mystery. The newspapers of that time carry telegraph dispatches which contain just the player line-ups. Very limited game
story accounts as well. The 1934 through 1938 WC tournaments seem to offer similar difficulties.

But if I find more details, I will post here for you. Thanks again for your help, Jukka.

I just noticed, that though the Czechs have excellent statistics available, my only information of team Czechoslovakia 1976 in Innsbruck is, that Jiri Bubla and Eduard Novak scored 1 goal and Ivan Hlinka 3.

The 1976 Innsbruck Olympic hockey tournament statistics for the Czechoslovakian team is somewhat confusing. Please let me explain.

If you remember, influenza was widespread throughout the '76 Olympics and as a result, most of the Czechoslovakian team took sick. This would later prove to have a
great effect on the outcome of the tournament for the CZE hockey team.

The Czechoslovaks had beaten Poland 7-1, but defenceman and captain Frantisek Pospisil tested positive for a prohibited substance (flu medicine) after traces of codeine were detected following completion of the CZE-POL game. Because of this positive test finding, the results of the CZE-POL game were reversed and entered into the official records as a 1-0 win for Poland. Officially, the IIHF and IOC list this game as a forfeit. Even though CZE got credited with the loss, Poland did not get the victory counted in the standings. The CZE goals were also deleted from both team's official GF and GA standings. As a sidenote, Pospisil was not disqualified from the tournament by the IOC and was allowed to continue playing.

Plus, each of the 12 hockey teams that participated at the '76 Olympics had to play a qualification game to determine which 6 would play in Group A medal round and the other losing 6 teams would play in Group B. So each team played 5 official games in the tournament, and one qualification game. Czechoslovakia defeated Bulgaria 14-1 in its qualification game. These qualification games are not listed or counted in the official stats.

They embarked on a two-month tour of Europe that included quite a number of exhibition games beginning on 12 January 1938 in Dusseldorf, Germany with a 3-0 victory over the Dusseldorf club (CAN goals by Bruce, Heximer, Chipman).

Yes, you are correct. It is very difficult (at least with my limited resources) to find details on the WC's from the 1920's and 1930's. The North American newspapers of that time did not send any correspondents to Europe to report on the tournaments and instead relied on cable dispatches for coverage, resulting in sparse accounts of game action and statistics.

The ultimate best source to find WC boxscores would most likely be the historical archives of such newspapers as Blick, Basler Zeitung, Sport, Helsingin Sanomat, Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet, Expressen, Mlada fronta Dnes, Lidove Noviny, Die Presse, Der Standard or the Kurier. In other words, the host city's newspapers of any particular world championship would be a goldmine of statistical information. As a matter of fact, they may be the only remaining source for these older stats.

Unfortunately, I do not have such access to these newspapers. I just have access to six North American historical newspaper archives (Toronto Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
and also The Times of London.

But if I can be of further assistance to you in helping find missing information, please let me know and I will do my best to fill in the blanks.

I have been looking through 1934 newspaper archives for USA goal scorers at the 1934 WC at Milano, Italy. I am missing the lone USA goal scorer in the 8 February 1:0 USA win over Austria. So here is what I have learned about this team.

It was named the Boston Rangers and was chosen on 21 December 1933 by Walter Brown, manager of the team. The American team was composed of eastern U.S. players, many of them were former college stars, and the team played an extensive exhibition schedule prior to and after the world amateur championship in Milano. Exhibition tour games began in Great Britain on 3 January 1934 with a 3:3 draw against the English national team combination of Streatham and Grosvenor House players. In addition to games played in London, the USA team played at Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham as well as Oxford and Cambridge Universities. They also played in Glasgow, Paris, Switzerland, Prague, Vienna and Milano.

The 10-man roster was:

DEF: Arthur Smith (Boston, Mass.) Boston
DEF: Edward Keating (Boston, Mass.) University of Alabama

The United States team defeated Italy, 5-0 (2:0, 2:0, 1:0), in an exhibition game on 3 February in Milan. This game was played in conjunction with the opening day of the 1934 World Championships, but did not count in the standings. The US goal scorers were Frank Stubbs with 2 goals in the 1st period, Arthur Smith and Walter Bender in the 2nd, and Walter Bender scoring again in the 3rd period.

I am looking through the 1924 newspaper archives and have surprisingly discovered very good game story coverage of the 1924 Olympic hockey tournament. I will try and piece together Great Britain's goal scorers for you.

Already I have found discrepancies regarding Canada's (Toronto Granites) leading goal scorer left-wing Harry E. Watson, who is still the record holder of most goals scored in an
Olympic tournament. Some sources list him as having 36 goals, while others list him with 37 goals. Several sources list him as having scored 13 goals vs Switzerland, 11 vs Czechoslovakia, 6 vs Sweden, 3 vs Great Britain and 3 vs USA for a total of 36. While others have him with 37 goals + 9 assists for 46 points.

There are also differences in goal totals for his linemates: centre Hooley (Reginald) Smith (some have him with 17 goals + 16 assists for 33 points, others with 18 goals), and right-wing Bert McCaffery (some have him with 19 goals + 15 assists for 34 points, others with 20 goals). So I am not certain which source is correct, especially since Canada (Toronto Granites) scored a record 110 goals in just 5 games. Three newspapers have different scoring summaries for the CAN-USA and CAN-CZE games, so the error is contained in one of them or perhaps a goal-scoring change occurred which was not properly addressed in the press.

I will continue investigating the 1924 newspaper files and will post here for you any results I find. Thanks again for your help Jukka.
