Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thanks to your stats about GBR 1935, I have to say this:

My boxscores of Canada 1935 are almost complete, but can you tell anything about the scores of Canada-Sweden?

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

The Canada-Sweden score 5:2 (3:0, 2:1, 0:1) from 22 January 1935 at Davos, showed that Canada's (Winnipeg Monarchs) Anthony (Tony) Lemay scored 3 goals and had 1 assist...his brother Albert Lemay scored 1 goal along with 2 assists...Romeo Rivers scored 1 goal with an assist to Norm Yellowlees. I am sorry that I cannot find the names of the Sweden goal scorers in that game.

However, I do have Latvia's goal scorers from their 5 games at the 1935 WC:

20 January 1935 -- Canada 14:0 Latvia (3:0, 7:0, 4:0)

21 January 1935 -- Great Britain 5:1 Latvia (1:0, 2:1, 2:0)
Latvia: Roberts Blukis

23 January 1935 -- Romania 3:2 Latvia (1:0, 2:0, 0:2)
Latvia: Roberts Blukis, Arvids Petersons

24 January 1935 -- Germany 3:1 Latvia (0:0, 1:0, 2:1)
Latvia: Adolfs Petrovskis

25 January 1935 -- Latvia 7:0 Netherlands (2:0, 1:0, 4:0)
Latvia: Andrejs Jessens (3), Aleksejs Auzins (2), Adolfs Petrovskis, Karlis Paegle

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thanks a lot for Canada-Sweden statistics! I am missing the scores of the Swedish team as well, but I know all goals scored by Hammarby IF players in this tournament!

Thank you very much for Latvia's scores as well, I like to have some stats like these too!

All right, still hope to find some stats of Switzerland 1953 team scores. If I catch anything of Poland 1974, I'll give you a post!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Sorry, I couldn't help still asking about the stats of the old Canadian teams. Do you have any information about the goalscores of the following games:

1931 Krynica, Poland:
Canada-Austria 8-0
Canada-USA 2-0

And one US game: USA-Poland.

1933 Praha, Czechoslovakia:
23.3. Canada-Hungary 3-1

1934 Milan, Italy:
6.2. Canada-France 9-0.

Allright, I know, that these teams have been the most difficult ones, at least for me. But any info about these games is welcome!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Here is what I have found so far from the 1931 WC at Krynica, Poland. I will look for the other games on Monday because of my work obligations this weekend. Best regards, Jukka.

7 February 1931
USA 1:0 Poland
USA goal: Charles Ramsey

8 February 1931
Canada 2:0 USA (1:0, 0:0, 1:0)
Canada goals: Blake Watson (9:00, 1st period), Frank Morris (19:55, 3rd period).
Canada GK: Art Puttee, USA GK: Ted Frazier
Referee: Paul Loicq (Belgium)
Attendance: 5,000

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

All right, thank you very much! Interesting attendance in the final game of 1931. According to my information, there was room only for 3000 people in the stands!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

I am not having much success in finding scoring details on the 7 February 1931 Canada-Austria game. For some reason all the newspapers carry the same wire story which lacks scoring information from the games played on that date. As a result of this, I have only located game scorers from 5 of the 6 Canada games at the 1931 WC in Krynica, Poland.

1 Feb 1931 Canada 9:0 France
Canada goals: Blake Watson (3), Sammy McCallum (2), Frank Morris (2), Gord MacKenzie (2).

4 Feb 1931 Canada 2:0 Czechoslovakia
Canada goals: Ward McVey, Blake Watson

5 Feb 1931 Canada 3:0 Poland
Canada goals: Guy Williamson, George Hill, Jack Pidcock

6 Feb 1931 Canada 0:0 Sweden
No goals scored

7 Feb 1931 Canada 8:0 Austria
Canada goals: ??????

8 Feb 1931 Canada 2:0 USA
Canada goals: Blake Watson, Frank Morris

However, I do have all of the Great Britain goal scorers from their 4 games at the 1931 WC:

1 Feb 1931 Austria 1:0 (OT) Great Britain

3 Feb 1931 Hungary 3:1 Great Britain
Great Britain goal: (captain) John Magwood

5 Feb 1931 Great Britain 2:1 France
Great Britain goals: Brian Carr-Harris, John Magwood

6 Feb 1931 Great Britain 11:0 Romania
Great Britain: John Magwood (3), Brian Carr-Harris (3), Neville Melland (3), Carl Erhardt (2).

The 1933 WC at Prague is not covered very well in any of the newspaper archives that I have access to. Very limited information, which surprises me since the Canadian team was represented by the Toronto National Sea Fleas under the direction of Harold Ballard. And the 1934 WC at Milano also is missing many key scoring details as well. I am sorry to report this, Jukka.

Good news is that the 1937 WC in London is covered in great detail by the Times of London. I have almost every goal scorer from the 1937 tournament if you should need any data from this one.

I apologize for not being able to help you more on those missing games of 1931, 1933 and 1934. Best regards to you Jukka.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Nevermind, I never even imagined to improve my stats like this, when I first posted my inquiries.

I do have Canadian and Great Britain stats of 1931. But thanks anyway, I'll compare the information. The most legendary player of this tournament was, I think, goalie Art Puttee, who according to my stats played a total shut-out in six games.

All right, I do have most of the goalscorers of London 1937, but I'll be pleased to have even more data.

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Thank you very much for the 1937 WC stats. I have 6 of the 7 goal scorers for France (Boyard - 3 goals, Payot - 1, Couttet - 1, and Claret - 1). Jukka, you had mentioned that you had the French stats? May I ask if you could post them so I can figure out the France goal scorer for the 22 Feb CZE-FRA 8:1 game?

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Just checking my stats after work, sorry, I noticed, I missread your post a bit:
Poland-France 7-1: French goal scored by Couttet, assisted by Revoyaz.

And hungarian goals against France 5-1: Miklos, Rena, Geney 2, one unknown.

And it was of course Poland-Hungary 4-0, but unfortunately no info of goalscorers in my stats.

But the other stats are OK! Hope, this helps you anyway!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Thanks again for your excellent help. I am still having trouble figuring out the 1937 WC Switzerland goal scorer totals.

Some sources list Kessler (not sure which one, Herbert or Charles) as having scored the only Swiss goal in the 27 Feb 2:1 loss to Canada. But both Toronto newspapers list Heini Lohrer as the goal scorer.

Globe & Mail has: "Goble nets winning goal after Lohrer had tied count."
"Switzerland tied the score on a goal by H. Lohrer, centre of the Swiss second line, before the second period ended."

Daily Star has:
"Puffy Kemp sent Canada ahead in the second period and H. Lohrer equalized within a few minutes."

Jukka, in the 19 Feb Suisse-Czechoslovak 2:2 tie, I have Ferdinand "Pic" Cattini and Kessler as the goal scorers for SUI. Not sure which Kessler scored (Herbert or Charles?).

And in the 26 Feb Suisse-Germany 6:0 win, I have "Pic" Cattini with 3 goals, Hans Cattini with 2 goals and "Bibi" Torriani with the other goal. Is this correct with your goal totals?

Thanks a million times for your help.

Hello Jukka,

Upon further research, the Times of London also has Lohrer listed as the lone Swiss goal scorer in the 2:1 loss to Canada. Plus I have found some discrepancies as well. The two Canadian newspapers list Kemp as having scored in the second period, but the Times of London has Kemp scoring in the first minute of the first period, which would be the more accurate account of the match.

"At the start, a runaway victory for Canada seemed possible when they went straight through in the first minute for Kemp to beat goalie Arnold Hirz easily from Forsay's pass. Switzerland soon proved that this was a "snap" goal by holding the Canadian attack afterwards and also being distinctly unlucky not to equalize. Swiss forwards Lohrer and Torriani were continually dangerous with good shots which Canadian goalie Campbell had some difficulty in clearing, but it was not until the second period that Switzerland drew level."

"A fine rush by Kessler and Lohrer led up to the Swiss scoring. Campbell only partially saving a fast shot from Lohrer which glanced off his pads into the goal amid tremendous enthusiasm."

So I guess this means that one of the Kesslers did not score a goal in the 1937 WC.
And Lohrer should get credit for an additional goal in his totals, from 5 goals to 6.
Plus, there is confusion over how many goals the Cattini brothers each had. Some have Hans Cattini with 4 goals scored, some with 3 goals.

Jukka, what do you think about this? Thanks for your help.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Here are the stats that I have from all the other French games of 1937:

France-Sweden 2-1:
French goalscores: Boyard, Payot (assist: Lacarriere).
Canada-France 13-1.
French goalscorer: Boyard.

So, I think, this will help you with your search for the Freanch scorer!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

When I was viewing your post about the French goalscorers, it is obvious, that CZE-France (8-1) French goal was scored by Boyard in that game.

What else can you say, except, that that's the thing with these stats of the 1920's and 1930's? They always seem to vary in different countries.

But anyway, thank you very lot! Now, at least the Canadian and GBR stats seem to be better.

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

Yes, there seems to be quite a bit of inconsistency concerning the statistics from the earlier WC tournaments. That has been a major problem for me in trying to find accuracy from a single source. Unfortunately, the IIHF does not keep stats from these early WC's.

As for the 1937 Great Britain team, these are the goal scorer totals I have found from the Times of London goal scoring summaries (which also included complete line-ups and sometimes the assists).

Gordon Dailley - 9 goals
Edgar Brenchley - 9 goals
Alex Archer - 8 goals
John Davey - 7 goals
Archibald Stinchcombe - 5 goals
Jimmy Anderson - 3 goals
Norm McQuade - 3 goals
James Chappell - 3 goals
Jimmy Kelly - 2 goals
Paul McPhail - 1 goal

Hope this helps somewhat, despite all the confusion. I apologize for that, Jukka.
It is a mess but at least we are trying to clear up some of the problems.

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thanks a lot for the goalscoring summary in the Times.

You don't have to apologize. I have been collecting this informations for years and I know very well, how difficult it often is.

But, if you find some info of those not quite complete medal team stats of mine, let me know! Especially the Swiss stats of 1953 are still very vague.

And if you want to know some stats, I'll see, what I can do. Like I have told earlier, my stats outside the medal teams are pretty scarce. Mostly best scorers of pools B and C, occasionally pool D.

All right, If I find something of team Poland scores in Helsinki 1974, I'll let you know!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Sorry to bother you again with London 1937, but could you post the goalscorers of Canada-France 13-1. The French source mentions only 12 Canadian goalscorers!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Jukka,

It is no bother, I am happy to help. Glad to have someone who also shares an interest in finding past WC statistics. Unfortunately, there are not as many others doing this research and thereby we are limited in numbers.

Here are the Canadian goal scorers from the 13:1 win over France, courtesy of the Globe & Mail:

"Jack Forsey, a member of the Kimberley Dynamiters during the 1935-36 season but this season performing in the English National league, scored 4 goals for Canada in this game, bringing his total so far in the tournament to 6.

"The other Canadian goals were scored by Gordon Wilson (2), George Goble (2),
Fred Botterill (2), Ralph Redding (2), and Bill Burnett with 1 goal."

"Canadian goalie Kenny Campbell was robbed of his shutout two minutes before the end of the game when France's Philippe Boyard beat him."

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Thanks a lot! Now I can update the info on my website.

Allright, whenever something new appears about Poland 1974, I'll give you a post!

All the best
Jukka

Hello Svetovy Poharu!

Now, just for my personal interest: have any stats of the exhibition games series of the following Canadian national teams:
1956 (Kitchener-Waterloo Flying Dutchmen)
1960 (Kitchener-Waterloo Flying Dutchmen)
1962 (Galt Terriers)

Even the stats of one single game will do!

All the best
Jukka
