Avs defense is probably one of the worst skating defenses in the league as it is. Siemens, Bigras and Elliott are good skaters but they're not helping us in the short run.

You're promising he'll turn out like EJ?

No, I'm saying that things can change. Especially if he could be turned into a Hejda type player. If paired with someone like Barrie and made into a stay at home d-man. His skating wouldn't be nearly as important then.

I'm not saying it's a great idea and that we should go after him, just that all is not necessarily lost.

Schenn at 3.6 million is kind of frightening. He is big and throws his body around a lot, which would be nice. Blocks a fair amount of shots too. He'd essentially take Guenin's role, and Guenin is payed 1/4 of what Schenn is.

Funny how that 2008 draft turned out.

Schenn--> Overpaid. Bogosian--> Overpaid. Myers--> Overpaid.

All had early success followed by regression.
All taken ahead of Erik Karlsson. His foot speed is quite good.

Mock it all you want, I still don't get your reasoning. Apart from one good rookie season, Schenn has done nothing to justify the pick nor his current deal. And he sure as hell hasn't justified the trade for JVR.

He's already played 400 NHL games as a guy who just turned 24. He may not be the next Shea Weber, but at the very worst he's a third pairing d-man and penalty killer.

Given his draft pedigree and what Patrick Roy has done with Erik Johnson, Jan Hejda, and two AHL-journeymen (Nate Guenin, Nick Holden), it certainly doesn't seem like a bad idea to gamble on Schenn when the price of admission is most likely a mid-round draft choice.

Very much this. He's a perfect guy to take a gamble on.

Similar to your own response when you were asked why you want Luke Schenn.

The next time someone asks me why in "God's name" I think a player would be appealing to the Avalanche, I'll make sure no one has to read between the lines in my response: his pedigree. :nopity:

If Schenn doesn't cost more than a 3rd +, it would be a great deal to take a chance on. A 2nd I start to waiver... A 1st no freaking way.

Kypreos just said on Sportsnet that the Avs have a long term deal worth around 5 million on the table for Stastny, but that he doesnt think it will be enough.

Only five million? Well if that's all they're offering...

Which is a pretty poor reason given the flaws in his game and his performance in the league over the last several season.

It may have a '5' in front of it, but I highly doubt they would offer him 5M flat.

Look at what Roy and Sakic have done with other players like Varlamov and Landeskog. Both got a little more than most Avs fans expected, not over payment but very fair deals.

My guess would be that 'around 5M' would mean something along the lines of 5.6M AAV, with the first years of the contract being 6M plus.

That's the only way the deal is around 5M IMO.

Edit : A 7 year deal at 39.2M : 6.6 + 6.6 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 4 : would average out to 5.6M AAV, and take him to 35/36 years old. I should add that I can see the AAV being in the '5M' range but not his current salary, which is very common.

It's an adequate reason given how low his trade value is and what Patrick Roy has done with struggling defensemen this season.

Roy hasn't done anything with Wilson or Hunwick.

Schenn is a waste of assets given how far along the Avs forwards and goaltending are, and how poorly Schenn has played.
