Did Putin threaten to invade Toronto if Samsonov doesn't play?

Samsonov has one of the worst sv percentages in the NHL the last 30 years

Going back 30+ years;
Craig Billington on Ottawa had 859
Arturs Irbe on SJ had 860
Grant Fuhr on Calgary had 856
Dan Cloutier in LA had 860
Byron Dafoe in ATL had 862
Reinhart Divis in STL had 840

Either the goalie is old, the team is awful or both. Samsonov should be in his prime and the Leafs are a good team and he is at 862............

It's actually kind of incredible how bad he was, even going back 15+ years for Toronto, a 40+ year old Cujo playing on a terrible Leafs team with Jason Blake, Matthew Stajan, Ponikarovsky and Pavel Kubina leading the way put up 870.

This guy doesn't belong anywhere near an NHL team, Campbell was demoted after FIVE games of .873, whereas Ilya appeared in 15+.

It will be interesting how it shakes out when Woll is back. No way they can send Jones down
Probably part of the purpose here, see him play before the deadline.

If he plays decent they could decide to roll with three or open up the possibility of moving his whole contract out as opposed to eating most of it in the minors. If he doesn't play decent we're back in the same spot.

Unfortunate if we drop a game or two because of this, but perhaps an acceptable risk to ensure we shape the roster as best we can for the playoffs.

Keefe. Samsonov. Overpays. Never fixing the D core.

List goes on. They arent a serious contender in the office. Its why they will not be a serious contender on the ice.

Do they need him to break down and sob on the bench before they think he's done? He lets in one muffin and you're going to see a man shrivel up and die while wearing skates on live TV. This isn't compassionate, this isn't smart, this isn't in any way good for the team or the player.

He shouldn't play for the Leafs again, but I can understand giving him another chance. But it shouldn't be this side of January, if he needs a mental reset then he needs some actual time. Send him and a trainer to Fiji or some shit, not give him the right to commit seppuku at centre ice if he's not Patrick Roy his first game back.

This org is so, so stupid.

Sammy stole game 6 for the Leafs last year. He was the only Leafs goalie to steal an elimination game in a recent history. So, it’s only right to give him a chance. Obviously his agent f.cked him up with the contract and arbitration thing. He wasn’t in the right place to start the year.
I think there are many people here who are fine with Samsonov getting another chance.
But what has changed since he was sent down?
Was this really enough time for a mental reset? Why wasn’t he given any AHL games to rebuild his confidence?

The problem isn’t that he is being given a chance. The problem is that he isn’t being put in the best position to make that chance work.

Samsonov might only receive starts in the back-to-back situations leading into the all-star break (which would only see him start in two out of nine games).

Okay and what is the point of that?
If we are trying to give Samsonov his best chance to succeed I think more time away or a couple starts in the AHL to rebuild some confidence would have been better.

If we are trying to give the team its best chance to succeed I would like to see if Hildeby gives us that right now in those limited starts.

Like others have said this is just like when the Blue Jays recalled Manoah before they properly had a chance to rebuild him.

Fire whoever signed off on this.

WTF is wrong with this f****** organization? Jesus f****** Christ man.

Seems like a slight overreaction. No sense having Hildeby sitting on the bench when he can be playing. Once Woll is back, it will play itself out

BS

Guess we have to pick which of our back to back games to punt this weekend with Sammy starting ugh.
The way I see it, the Leafs winning streak will eventually end.

I'd be happy with a split this weekend. If so, at least it'll be Sammy getting lit up and not a rookie goalie.

Who knows, if Sammy actually does bounce back it will make him easier to trade at the deadline.

3 or 4 only?
I mean... yeah, probably. They've mostly racked up plenty of points in his games in spite of his awful play. They've gone 7-2-6 for 20 points in his 15 games. Given what the offense has done in those games, maybe a solid goalie goes 10-1-4 or something?

No it’s not an overreaction at all.

How many games has Samsonov cost us this season so far? He’s not in the right frame of mind to be playing in the NHL right now.

This is the perfect sports comparison.

A lot of good discussion already. I'm pretty late to the conversation. I want to just ask this (tongue in cheek):

Is Samsonov healthy enough to sit on the bench?

I'm not worried about Samsonov getting a start soon. But I am a bit worried that the team won't have the guts to waive him and assign him to the AHL (to stay and play this time) when Woll gets back.

If that happens, than people can get the pitchforks out. For now, it’s the right move so Hildeby can get some consistent work

Why not? His mental problems are most certainly anxiety-related. Fear. He is working with a psychologist, and all they are good at is giving drugs. They will give him Prozac, and he will sit without any problem. Hell, he may even play.
