It's almost like he had one of the worst injuries imaginable short of actually getting your arm cut off for shooting accuracy/power.

Would you prefer him to.. take less shots from in close? Even if he had a 0% career shooting percentage, every time he is getting a shot from that close in is a minute that the puck isn't in our zone and the opponent's defense isn't doing their job well enough.

Would you prefer a Vesey who generates nothing but cleans up garbage goals slightly more often? Better "real" production at the cost of worse "fake" stats, seems like a slam dunk upgrade no?
Mikheyev didn't generate many sustained pressure opportunities they were mostly in tight rushes on PK or off a line change.

He wasn't a strong possession player who could play a board style oriented game

Also there is no such thing as real/fake production their is only production. Shot generation is not valuable if conversion is not there for a sustainably long period. Generating chances while not converting doesn't help a team and only plays for a trap and grit style defense who enjoys time ticking off the clock when facing more talented/skilled offensive teams. It's what the Habs enjoyed doing

Possession, generation only become valuable for a team once conversion comes through. Analytics overstate the value that possession has and people here frequently overrate players with good possession and generation chances but poor conversion.

Vesey on the leafs was around as valuable as Mikheyev this year in the games he dressed, though a better example would be Travis Boyd who had 8pts in 20 games and was a spark plug when he played but didn't do well in possession and defensive situations. Mikheyev constantly killed offense and his blown chances ended up in the back of our net on the PK a few times of the momentuem for opposing teams (Calgary scored a goal think it was Tkachuk after one of Mikheyevs patented failed breakaways)

Just pointing out that many times these fancy stats are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Reminiscent of Timashov, who believed he could get more opportunity elsewhere and soon ended up back in the AHL. I doubt Mikheyev suffers such a fate, as I think his speed and two-way play makes him a solid bottom 6er at the NHL level. But he needs a reality check if he believes he's more than that right now.

I agree with Dubas' decision to keep him around, if only because our LW depth is so shallow (which makes this story even more strange - why ask out if your competition is Bunting and Richie?). Otherwise, I'd want him gone. I'm so tired of the egos on this team, and it is especially disappointing to see that from a guy like Mik, who outwardly seemed to have a good relationship with management.

I know a guy that believes he faked the injury because the going was getting tough.

Dubas should move this guy out. He’s a sh!tshow offensively, soft and choker in the playoffs to boot. Who cares run him out of town. How am i supposed to cheer for that guy now. Beat it i say. I won’t cheer for him and i hope Keefe drains his games and icetine away. He’d probably run home and cry.
Instantly have no need to cheer for him. Wants out so ship him.

Accommodating players that want a better opportunity is being soft? You do know that every GM goes through these situations and sometimes often and for all kinds of reasons. From Lamoriello to Wilson to Poile to Murray.

What is being taken advantage of here exactly? Seems like a player that just wants a bigger opportunity and the Leafs probably want to give him that opportunity unlike someone like Lehtonen that really didn't show much promise in his stints.

I'm a fan of Mikheyev and think he's a good player but this is a weird report. He's had many opportunities and he's been given a lot of chances higher in the lineup. He'll have a pretty wide open chance to take over a big role this season.
You don’t go whining to the office asking for a trade if it’s not a big deal. Ditch him out.

Keefe has his favorites and then he had guys he just didn't like to use. The "didn't like to" group included Tavares and Willie during the regular season as well as Mik. What would Willie have felt if he had played 16 minutes a night in the playoffs? I don't want to turn this into a Keefe bashing thread but if a player feels the coach isn't in his corner then things like this might come up. There is a difference between a prima donna like Drouin and a player who just thinks he isn't in the club's/coach's plans.

Maybe he just needed more of Kyle's hugs because he may not have been helped to be himself sooner:sarcasm: Seriously it was kind of a new direction last year with some vet additions designed to remove the butter soft game the club had been cultivating thus far and the coach was trying to incorporate the new players he had been given which is his responsibility. Mik never got untracked enough to protect his minutes and the team has a ton of guys who play a no contact game so he loses the opportunity to get rolling. We don't know all the details, or that he wouldn't re-up with the Leafs first chance he gets if he has a bigger year. I am definitely curious but I can't judge the guy based on some of the team's regular season lineup choices last year.

If I was on a team that thought Joe Thornton was more valuable than me even though it’s clearly not the case I’d ask for a trade also. There’s no accountability with this team. Guys couldn’t play their way out of Keefe’s dog house no matter what and the favourites always got their ice time

0 points in 12 playoff games (if you count the qualifier)
3-4 of those games he had JT and Marner as linemates

The second someone indicates they don't want to be in your organization, you move on.

Chicago had Frolik, who had the draft pedigree and Kruger who was a stud offensively in Sweden and they were fantastic food soldiers. They knew their role, never complained and the team had success. Seemingly every player who comes to Toronto thinks they're a star.

Or maybe Mikheyev isn’t convinced this team is capable of or committed to winning when it matters.

Clearly having 40 career points (105gp including the playoffs) should be all that one needs to leapfrog an aging HHoF level player that was among the best of his generation.

What more does he need to do? They forced his hand here

Thornton was useless last year. At least Mikeyhev could retrieve pucks. He’s Hyman lite

I feel like Joe Thornton was not the Malple Lesfs or Mikheyev's problem last season... And he was a much less noteworthy no show when the chip were down than some others Leafs were...

I would say i wish Thornton never played on the team. What a useless endeavour he was.

That’s not what we’re discussing. We’re discussing why Mikeyhev wants out. He only gets tough usage. Shutdown and PK while Thornton gets #1 line and PP all while being terrible and an anchor

If role & icetime are the issues then I could easily see his icetime become something he's happy with.

His role ain't changing though until he learns how to finish again, that's up to him.

My thoughts exactly. Contrary to what he thinks I think the organization has been more than fair to him - he had multiple shots at the top-6 and he never cracked it. His playoffs were a straight disgrace too, one of the biggest passengers on the team the last 2 years.

Start him on the 4th line this year and tell him to earn it the real way.
