Mikheyev didn't generate many sustained pressure opportunities they were mostly in tight rushes on PK or off a line change. It's almost like he had one of the worst injuries imaginable short of actually getting your arm cut off for shooting accuracy/power.
Would you prefer him to.. take less shots from in close? Even if he had a 0% career shooting percentage, every time he is getting a shot from that close in is a minute that the puck isn't in our zone and the opponent's defense isn't doing their job well enough.
Would you prefer a Vesey who generates nothing but cleans up garbage goals slightly more often? Better "real" production at the cost of worse "fake" stats, seems like a slam dunk upgrade no?
He wasn't a strong possession player who could play a board style oriented game
Also there is no such thing as real/fake production their is only production. Shot generation is not valuable if conversion is not there for a sustainably long period. Generating chances while not converting doesn't help a team and only plays for a trap and grit style defense who enjoys time ticking off the clock when facing more talented/skilled offensive teams. It's what the Habs enjoyed doing
Possession, generation only become valuable for a team once conversion comes through. Analytics overstate the value that possession has and people here frequently overrate players with good possession and generation chances but poor conversion.
Vesey on the leafs was around as valuable as Mikheyev this year in the games he dressed, though a better example would be Travis Boyd who had 8pts in 20 games and was a spark plug when he played but didn't do well in possession and defensive situations. Mikheyev constantly killed offense and his blown chances ended up in the back of our net on the PK a few times of the momentuem for opposing teams (Calgary scored a goal think it was Tkachuk after one of Mikheyevs patented failed breakaways)
